Film.com Twilight DVD Review

DVD Review: Twilight Is Astonishingly Perfect
The double disc set is a fans delight!
Amanda Mae Meyncke, Mar 19, 2009
You have your Team Edward T-Shirt all washed and pressed, your well worn copies of the four Twilight books are stacked on your night table, and you have your midnight DVD release party plans set in stone. There are just a few scattered doubts lingering in the back of your mind, what if it doesn’t live up to your expectations? What if they left something out? With a Two Disc Special Edition DVD, rest assured, they’ve left nothing out.

Twilight. The books that launched a thousand screaming fits of ecstasy over the love between Bella (Kristen Stewart), a fragile human, and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), an extraordinarily beautiful vampire who seeks to understand and love Bella even as he insists she is safer away from him. That’s pretty much all you need to know, and while it may sound simple, the series tackles a serious question: can love conquer all?

Some DVD commentaries have only minor characters or a screenwriter and editor bantering back and forth over the film, but not Twilight. They’ve delved straight into the collective mind and produced the three people you’d want to hear from most. The audio commentary is beyond hilarious, as director Catherine Hardwicke, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart tease each other, discuss filming problems and improvised moments with the sort of insider glee that’s truly delightful. Surprisingly, Pattinson himself leads the mockery, and his comments show a remarkable amount of self-awareness, as well as some bitingly witty observations, and offerings of alternatively sly dialogue, which tends from minor brilliance to laughing out loud hilarity. In addition to the commentary, worth the retail price alone, there are several music videos from bands that appeared on the soundtrack: Muse, Paramore and Linkin Park. The extended scenes, introduced by the director, offer us a few more glimpses into the world of the vampires, and the day to day existence of Bella and Edward as they learn to love each other.

This DVD release has been suffused with love, and such care and attention for detail that even the most critical fan would be hard pressed to find much to complain about. One nice thing, which given the immensity of work poured into this release feels greedy to even ask for, might have been an audio commentary track with the author, Stephenie Meyer and the screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg discussing the transition of book to screen over the course of the entire film. Also a nice feature might have been a longer look at the music of Twilight, since music plays such a significant role in the books as well as the film. While there is space in the documentary feature, including a visit to composer Carter Burwell’s recording studio, it would have been neat to hear a bit more about the soundtrack selection process.

But idle wishes aside, make no mistake: this DVD is packed with bonus features, including extended and deleted scenes, and one surprising treat. The long documentary on the special second disc, which goes deep into nearly every step of the Twilight film-making process. If you hate the books or the movie, you’re not likely to care for many of the special features, but the “making of” features are still interesting and engaging to anyone interested in stunt-work, or visual effects or the business of putting together an entire production from script to theatrical release. As they explain the movie magic of filming the epic baseball scene, or the crashing through the floorboards in the climactic fight scenes, appreciation starts to grow for the intense amount of work that went into making the film look effortless from start to finish.

A slightly strange but pleasant touch was the inclusion of Comic-Con 2008 footage, where a few thousand screaming fans attended a panel question and answer session with the cast, and clips from the film were screened. Love for a book or a film, is something hard-won and held close to the heart, and as one reads and grows attached to characters, there’s an exchange of ownership. Stephanie Meyer may have written Edward and Bella, but she’s given them up to every reader, and the makers of this film, who so carefully preserved them as best they could. There’s a very real feeling of respect with this DVD, that the trust placed in the filmmakers has been rewarded yet again with an astoundingly replete release that will be treasured and seen again, a thousand times over.

Pattinson and Stewart : Still Really Cool says Twilight Direcror

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke remembers the exact moment she decided to say no to New Moon.

"I was in Paris with Rob [Pattinson] and Kristen [Stewart] at dinner and talking to them and it was like, 'Is this really the schedule? Would we really be starting ten and half weeks from now?'" Hardwicke told me yesterday in Santa Monica at the launch event for her new book, Twilight: Director's Notebook. "Yes, we would, for various reasons which I respect, but I really thought it would be better for somebody else, who hadn't just been working every day for two years without a day off."

But now, as New Moon filming gets underway in Vancouver with director Chris Weitz, does Hardwicke have any regrets? Read on to find out…

"I'm sad," Hardwicke admitted. "But I would not want to let those people down…I was offered a very nice amount of money, plenty more than I have ever seen or my family has seen. But I wanted to do it only if I was going to make it better than Twilight."

Hardwicke says she keeps in touch with Pattinson and Stewart and is happy to report that they haven't changed much since she first met them. "It hasn't gone to their heads," she said. "They're still really cool. They've got their family and friends who keep them grounded. It's so cool."

Hardwicke also confirmed reports that she's reuniting with Summit Entertainment (the studio behind the Twilight movie franchise) to direct the adaptation of If I Stay, a young adult novel that doesn't even come out until next month.

And earlier this week, it was announced that she's attached to Maximum Ride from James Patterson's book series about a group of kids who are 98 percent human and two percent bird.

Yes, another series with a nice big fan base. Sound familiar?

"I love when people are that excited and passionate about it," she said. "When you do an indie film you're just hoping somebody will go see the movie and you're trying to stir it up with some excitement. The fact that there already is excitement is great."

Gozde:

Dear Catherine,

I liked you, I loved your "spunk" about the whole series AND you cast Rob as Robward Cullenson which gave you an all inclusive pass to anything EVER done but YOU left out the "I love you"s in Twilight, YOU left out why Edward fell in love with Bella and vice versa, YOU deleted the scenes that were vital to the movie and left in the ones that were commercial. YOU cast Nikki Reed as Rosalie! I do love me some Nikki but Rosalie? Seriously? The most beautiful BLOND woman in the world?

As a woman YOU couldn't capture the love between Edward and Bella!

If it wasn't for Rob I would have hated the movie adaptation of Twilight.

I hope the next installments will show Robward as the gentleman who would DIE to make Bella happy/loved. NOT drag her around by the arm and tell her to google stuff!

Just do your research people! It's not that hard...

Twilight pre-orders break Wal-Mart record

Twilight is the most pre-ordered DVD in Wal-Mart history, according to the chain, as it releases further details about its Friday launch parties for the teen vampire flick.

(Gozde: Let me tell you why the DVD is the most pre-ordered in history:

Yep, that's why... :) Bank on Robert Pattinson! He sells... )

The film’s cast has taped a fan greeting that will be broadcast exclusively through Wal-Mart’s in-store TV network during its midnight parties. This message, from unspecified film talent, was filmed on the set of Twilight’s sequel, New Moon.

More than 2,400 of Wal-Mart’s 24-hour stores will host bashes for Twilight, which streets from Summit Home Entertainment on March 21. Wal-Mart is exclusively selling the film’s single-disc version. Twilight’s two-disc special edition will be available widely at retail.

Also, Wal-Mart joins Hastings, Blockbuster and other retailers in rolling out blood drives at select outlets starting today. Donors will receive exclusive Twilight-themed gifts while supplies last.

The first 50 people in line for Wal-Mart parties will score an exclusive gift package filled with such goodies as a custom folder featuring star characters Bella and Edward, Twilight tattoos and materials for hosting at-home viewing parties.

“We know this is unlike any other DVD release in our history, and we want to deliver a memorable event and store experience for teens and adult fans everywhere,” said Greg Hall, VP of merchandising Wal-Mart Entertainment.
