Cinepremiere with Robert Pattinson.

- I have to tell you that when I found out that you were playing Edward it was like a clash of the worlds, since I knew you as Cedric.
Do you think that makes me a traitor? (laughs).

- No, not at all. Do you think you’re a traitor?
No, actually I find it weird that they keep comparing the two of them. They have nothing in common. And all of the sudden I was the connection with both, which is even more weird since I die in Harry Potter.

- What was it like to play a vampire?
Actually, it was very hard, since I try to overact certain actions, like for instance, that I’m trying not to move faster. It can look weird. It’s more about the subtle things.

- What is it like to be able to hear the thoughts of those around you?
Esencially I thought he doesn’t care what people think, he’s even bored with it. I would go mad if I could hear everyone’s thoughts.

- Did you get any special information from your character’s fifth book, which hasn’t been published?
Yes, actually I read a manuscript when we were filming. It was a very tough part and I had the chance to find a way to play it and build something from it.

- Tell me about the scene in which you play the piano? It came in handy for you being a pianist, I assume.
Actually, that scene was not in the original script. But I guess hey thought it was very important, when he writes the song for Bella. It was midnight and I had been playing random things and someone filmed it. And practically the whole song came out from it.

- Why do you think the story draws so much attention?
It appeals to me because of the way it’s written, as if it was a personal fantasy. It’s a very obsesive way to write, as if she had complete devotion over a character. It’s four books of worshipping someone and that catches on.

Cinemanía. Interview with Catherine.

- This is a very unusual movie for you to make…
It’s about teenagers, and all of my movies are about teenagers, so it’s not that unusual.

- But this is more about fantasy.
Yes, but it’s very passionate. When you’re a teenager, you’re passionate and emotional. You let go, you fall in love and when I read the book tha’s how I felt, like a teenager again.

- What was your approach to the book?
When I first I got the script, which it was very different from the book, there was tha possibility of me making this movie. So I went to the original source, read the book and I decided we needed to write the script again and follow the book more. Keep its spirit.

- There’s a rumor that you auditioned the actors in your bed.
I have a magic bed! In Thirteen there’s where Nikki Reed and Evan Rachel Wood did a scene, in my bed. I had a video camera and literally, there was magic. That’s how I knew the movie would come to life. And in this movie I told Robert and Kristen to get on the bed and we did the scene, and with the camera I started to feel the chemistry between them. In fact, we auditioned four other boys and it wasn’t the same.

- What’s your secret to get such great performances from young actors?
We rehearsed and we tried to discover what part of their lives connects with their character. We tried to improvise scenes that are not actually in the movie, but that could happen before this story happened.

- Did you work a lot with the actors before shooting?
We had auditions everyday, they were varied and then three weeks after the daily reahersals before shooting, we had to perfect the vampire movements and skills, but also we had emotional rehearsals. In total, I worked two or three months with them because some of them had to wok out and train for the movie.

- What’s the difference between the movie and the book?
We did some changes. I showed the movie to Stephenie Meyer a couple of days ago and I was so worried about what she would say about the differences. But she didn’t mind, she knew there would be changes to make it more visual, like the scene of the tree tops. It’s not like that in the book, but you get the feeling and we just did it more visually because in the book it’s like internal dialogue.

- Did she like the movie?
Yes, she said that she always wanted for the story to come alive like this, so for her to see Rob and Kristen give life to her characters must have been very exciting. She gaves us a couple of comments, little details to make it better.

- Music is very importan to Stephenie, what are you including in this soundtrack?
We have a new song by Vanessa Carlton. We’re also adding Radiohead and tons of great music. We were trying to get the music that inspired the book, because that’s the spirit of the story.

- And you also have the themes written by Robert Pattinson.
Yes, he’s too much. This guy plays the piano and he has beautiful fingers, like a vampire’s fingers, very thin and delicate, and the music that comes from his head, he can also sing it and play the guitar. It’s too much, plus he’s handsome and a very good actor.

- Will this become a franchise? Will you make the four movies?
Let’s cross our fingers.

- But do you think you would enjoy to be tied down to the same project for such a long time?
It could be like Harry Potter, in which hey have different directors, or like in Batman, in which is the same director. It works both ways, so we’ll see.

Carter Burwell Talks Bella's Lullaby- Rob's Musical Talent

Click headline to read full article.

The scene existed in the novel but hadn't originally been part of the screenplay (films are not one-to-one translations of books). In this scene Edward would play piano for Bella. I wasn't officially working on the film at that point and they didn't know what Rob Pattinson (Edward) should play during the shoot. This is not an unusual situation - many films have an actor sitting at a keyboard, swaying back and forth, pretending to play music that was only written after the film has been shot and edited. This case was unusual in that Rob is a fine musician, and fully capable of playing the piano or probably any other instrument.
