Robert Pattinson On Prepping For 'The Rover' & 'Maps To The Stars', Those Album Rumours & More

Rob spoke to Vanity Fair in Cannes and told them about how he prepped for his roles in The Rover & Maps to the Stars, about the album rumours, working with David Cronenberg again and lots more. Grab a cuppa and make yourself comfy, it's a good read.

Robert Pattinson knows a thing or two about the price of fame, so it’s worth listening when he says he worries about the child stars he meets in Hollywood. “When you see these kids, there is only one way: you either get in therapy now or become a serial killer, or kill yourself. I mean, you can see it really early on—it’s terrifying.”

There is just such a kid at the center of Maps to the Stars, one of two Pattinson films debuting at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Evan Bird, whom you may recognize from The Killing, plays Benjie, a vicious and entitled 13-year-old TV star, and Pattinson plays a chauffeur looking for a break in show business. Directed by David Cronenberg, who previously collaborated with Pattinson on 2012’s Cosmopolis, the film is a savage satire of Hollywood that also stars Julianne Moore as a hysterical over-the-hill actress, John Cusack as a diabolical life coach, and Mia Wasikowska as a warped avenging angel of sorts.

Pattinson has a meatier role in David Michôd’s post-apocalyptic road movie, The Rover, portraying a not-very-bright hoodlum who falls under the spell of Guy Pearce. As the two make their way across the Australian Outback, Pattinson’s character grows more confident—and more deadly—by the minute.

VF.com spoke to Pattinson at Cannes, where his ex-costar and -girlfriend Kristen Stewart also has a film debuting, and quizzed him about how he prepped for the roles, what he finds most ridiculous about Hollywood, and how he handled sudden superstardom at the tender age of 21.

VF Hollywood: David Michôd has talked a lot about the back story for The Rover, which is set “10 years after the collapse.” How much did he tell you about your character?

Robert Pattinson: Well, not a lot. I kept questioning that aspect of it. “What is this economic collapse? I want to know the details about it.” Then I realized it didn’t really make any difference to my character.

Guy Pearce’s character refers to your character as a “half-wit.” Were you playing him as someone with a real disability, or just someone who hasn’t been that well educated?

I was thinking he’s almost like someone who’s been told there is something wrong with him and there actually isn’t—but he has been told there is so many times that he has just sort of accepted it.

Last question: Twilight made you famous, Cosmopolis changed your Image and Romain Gavras' campagne film for Dior gives your charakter something unexpected. How sweet ist the smell of success?
"Being an actor is weird and the definition of success (...) changes over the years. Of course there is a sweet side to success: I don't have to worry or to work only for money, at least for the next few years. I have a huge respect of all these movies, that's why I try to take the time and energy to make these exciting decisions not everyone makes. (...) But I don't feel I've already been that successful. There's something about Dior that suits me: The brand is staying persistently independent and that's what I want for myself right now."

Rob's such a hot commodity. A renaissance man. An artist with boundless talents. Sure we're biased but it's the best bias to be in. ;)

Rob's affection for Martin Amis' Money is nothing new (he'd like to play John Self one day) and neither is knowing he writes more than songs. Put two and two together and you get this mention from an interviewer and Stephenie Meyer, who's promoting The Host. Excerpt from The Times (UK):

Meyer adds that she hasn’t seen either of them since the last Breaking Dawn premiere, and missed their company deeply on the set of The Host. Nevertheless, she hasn’t yet felt inspired to seek out any of Pattinson’s own writing, which includes a screen adaptation of the Martin Amis novel Money – about as far removed from Twilight as it is possible to get. “No, I haven’t read his script,” she admits, sheepishly, looking surprised that I know of its existence. “I’d be interested… and a little scared.”

Within moments of meeting Robert Pattinson, GQ.com learns a valuable lesson: you simply can't compete with Twilight fans. Having previously expressed his admiration for Martin Amis in an interview, it was decided we should present everyone's favourite server-crashing undead heartthrob with a copy of the new Amis novel Lionel Asbo. Sadly one literary-minded Edward Cullen devotee has trumped our gift. "I got given a first-edition signed copy of Money by a Twilight fan in Germany yesterday," reveals Pattinson. "She was trying to tell me that she found it in Massachusetts while we were surrounded by all these people screaming."

Pattinson stars in David Cronenberg's striking and strange new film Cosmopolis, out this week, which sees him as an otherworldly billionaire sating his carnal, financial and intellectual desires riding through town in the back of a limousine in search of a haircut. After some preliminaries (when presented with the latest edition of GQ he cries out "Andrew's wearing my suit!"), he talks about his hip-hop moment of glory, the worst haircut he's ever had and what he's learned from working with Frida Giannini at Gucci…

Your character has two lifts in his huge apartment, one of which is soundtracked by hip-hop. Which rapper would you have in your lift?
Robert Pattinson: Definitely Ol' Dirty Bastard. The biopic looks amazing! That guy Michael K Williams as well - I was obsessed with The Wire for ages. The guy who is directing - Joaquín Baca-Asay, who is James Gray's director of photography - is amazing. All his movies look incredible.

How did you feel when Tinie Tempah shouted you out on Chase & Status' "Hitz"?
What? [delighted, bewildered] I haven't heard it. I keep hearing everyone talking about him but for some reason I never really got into British rap. I don't know why.

The line is "Like Rob Pattinson I make a lot of n****s jealous"
Wow. That's really cool, actually. That's amazing. I didn't realise I had that relevance [laughs]. I wonder what made him single me out?

Not your typical GQ reader, I'd guess…

But she did ask about your worst haircut…
I did this movie about Salvador Dali a few years ago and had hair extensions and a little bob. That was incredibly bizarre. The extensions were temporary as well. I was trying to swim to somehow get in shape two days before we started shooting in this apartment complex in Barcelona. There were all these children everywhere… and I was this weird, pasty, hungover person with a girl's black bob, swimming in the pool with huge clumps of hair falling out. I had my whole body totally waxed as well because Dali didn't haven't any body hair. It was the most terrifying thing - this is terrible, but I saw the potential cannibal guy [Luka Magnotta] in the Sun today and I looked a bit like him.

Are sex scenes getting easier?
It's always a big thing. Juliette Binoche is one of my favourite actresses and within five minutes of meeting her on this we were pretending to have sex. Which wasn't in the script. With both sex scenes we were supposed to have finished sex before we did the scene. Both times David was just like, "Yeah, just have sex." That was a little awkward. I thought that Patricia McKenzie, who I did the other sex scene with, despised me up until that day on the set. We hadn't said a single word to each other apart from when I asked, "Where are you from?" and she literally looked me up and down. I was like, "I'm not trying to do anything - I don't have any idea!" Then on day of the sex scene she was like, "Hey how's it going?" I don't know what kind of preparation that was for this scene… but it definitely did something.

What TV do you never miss?
In America there is a channel called TruTV which is just reruns of Cops and World's Dumbest Criminals. I could watch that the entire day. Someone told me - I don't know if it's true - that David Simon watched tonnes of Cops to get the dialogue for The Wire. I was like, "I knew it…"

What has working with Frida and her team at Gucci taught you about tailoring?
That's funny, I've never had her singled out before - it's like it's a secret! She taught me one thing - you should definitely have good contacts at Gucci. They're absolutely amazing. The amount of times I've been stuck in some random city and have called her up and had things brought in at absolutely the last minute - it's crazy. But also all this stuff is custom-made. You can do quite crazy things [with colour] if you have incredibly classic, really well-made suits. I guess I've been quite boring for a while. I used to be more interesting with them. Now I always just request things two days before: "Can you send 25 suits?" I don't even know what I want to wear!

What's the strangest gift you've got from a fan?
It's funny: there are certain things that get picked up on really quickly. I quit smoking the other day and didn't even really realise that I'd said anything about it. I've been chewing these f***ing toothpicks all the time. Someone noticed in Cannes and literally the next day in Lisbon, then in Paris and in Berlin there were about 20 people on the red carpet giving me huge amounts of toothpicks. Thousands of them. I don't even remember saying it in an interview but I must have said it somewhere. That was kind of strange. (Kate: As if we wouldn't notice the toothpicks! LOL)

You are one of four individuals who consistently dominate internet discussion. Out of your rivals - Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga - who are you most fond of?
I really like Nicki Minaj. I think she's great. My favourite song? She's amazing in "Monster" with Kanye West. It's annoying that I'm part of this internet thing though - they all have Twitters and an online presence. How did I get part of this group? I didn't do anything. I'm trying to avoid it!

Actor Robert Pattinson has predicted that his new art-house film Cosmopolis will be embraced by Twilight fans.

"Some of them will just want you to play vampires, but most people don't want you to repeat yourself," the Briton told the BBC.

The heart-throb, who played Edward Cullen in the Twilight films, also defended his fans from accusations that their dedicated behaviour was "crazy".

Cosmopolis, directed by David Cronenberg, opens in the UK this week.

The film, based on the novel by Don DeLillo, was a contender for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

I'm just back from my Rob roadtrip in Cannes, Lisbon and Paris and have had an awesome time!. I have loads to catch up on uploading videos and photos.

I saw Rob a few times at Le Grand Journal, Cannes Cosmopolis premiere, outside the aftershow party where all the paparazzi madness ensued and the masses of crowds gathered on La Croisette beach front road. It was so crazy in Cannes, how Rob and Kristen cope with it all I don't know, but Rob was smiling all the way to the car despite the cameras blinding him and crowds pushing in. If I'd known how crazy it would have gotten I would have stayed away but you only know these things in hindsight.

Robert Pattinson grew fangs after the Twilight saga. He's bringing them out to portray a greedy golden boy for Cronenberg. Charming and honest, he welcomed us in Los Angeles. By Jacky Goldberg.

The interview took place on the last floor of the Soho House that overlooks Sunset Strip. It was on the patio of the private club where cameras and telephones were forbidden. He was without his press agent. He wore a three days beard, a cap, brown chino cloth pants, and a plaid shirt.

The interview lasted one hour.

You live in LA now?
RP: Yes, for a little while now. At first I didn't know what to do there and now when I'm far away I miss it. Even more than London where I grew up but that all my friends left. My family still lives there but they want to come here, same for my friends. It's crazy, all you need is to spend a day in LA to want to move in. *laughs* (Kate: You better not let me come visit so Tink or you'll be stuck with me ;p)

The movie breaks away from your image of the proper young man molded by Twilight and the few films that you filmed since then. Did you realise that as you were filming?
RP: Of course. I'm scared of being typecast *he thinks for a moment* ... like most actors who starts for that matter: it's important to branch out very early on. That's the whole point. In fact, I got offered the lead in Cosmopolis on my last day of filming Breaking Dawn. Right at the moment when I thought I was scared of repeating myself and bam! Cronenberg is calling me! It's better than anything I could ever dream of. Now I'm curious to see how the movie is received.

The interview was done in a private club in Sunset Boulevard.

He hid his intense beauty under a baseball cap, a blonde scruff, a lumberjack shirt, a white tee and washed out jeans.
They had the interview on the terrace where he could light up his cigarettes.

Between light coughs and nervous laughs, he explains that he doesn't feel at home here.

His dream is to work in a black comedy of Todd Solodnz or in dramas for men by James Gray or Jacques Audiard.

"I was scared of being cut off from the art-house cinema that I always felt passionate about. I was scared to never be asked to play in anything interesting, that my life would pass and that someone would ask me one day, 'so apart from Twilight, what did you do?'. In this industry, you're easily typecast"

"I never proved anything, I was never fooled by the hysteria that surrounds me. It's the character that I play, Edward Cullen, the romantic vampire. Besides, before the movie was even made, girls would screams at Stephenie Meyer's public readings."

When he got the script for Cosmopolis: He got the fear of the beginner/novice. "I was so scared I would screw this up that I spent a week trying to find a way to refuse the job. And then I told myself that I shouldn't be so stuck-up. My agent was nervous: 'why would you accept if you don't understand it?'. I confessed my confusion to David and he liked it. I think that might be why he hired me. Most actors would have try to act cooler, try to say something smart but I was completely lost."

Cronenberg said that the actor didn't come on set with his hands in his pockets. That he's an assiduous reader, who's been interested in the character of the 'golden boy' for a long while, one who's close to the one he portrays in Cosmopolis. 'Money' by Martin Amis - which describes the giddy heights of easy money and the chic hedonism - is one of his bedtime readings. He finds so many similarities with himself in the empty space of the star system, that he wrote how own version of the novel, in hopes of playing it one day.

Have you ever gone to the circus?

Rob: "I haven't, but it's weird that I can feel nostalgic for a place I've never been to."

When was the last time you cried?

Rob: "I continually cry, over everything. I'm crying right now! I'm drying my tears on the keyboard as I'm writing the answers" (Tink: so witty)

What book is on your bedside table at the moment?

Rob: "It's a book written by Steve Fisher, talking about the period when Las Vegas was under the control of the Mafia. I love the story of Las Vegas. (Tink: I think this is it...)

Rob: "It's John Self from the novel Money by Martin Amis, because Amis manages to make fascinating even the most disgusting character on earth." (Tink: This just made be bitter about us not having Bel Ami yet)

How do you picture yourself at age 90?

Rob: "I want to be with my wife, sitting on a deckchair, sipping some tea, and reading books in a retirement home, in a beautiful and warm place." (Tink: I want him to have this. *sigh*)

Do you prefer a pair of jeans or a tuxedo?

Rob: "Pair of jeans, but I don't mind wearing a tux, not everyday of course." (Tink: He doesn't mind wearing a tux because he knows he looks damn fine in one.)

Rob: "No, and I really don't believe in that stuff."

Rob: "I grew up on the crime side, the New York Times side. Staying alive was no jive" - It's C.R.E.A.M. by the hardcore rap group Wu-Tang Clan from New York. (Tink: I love him hard. )

A must in your closet

Rob: "Underwear, which is only necessary thing after all. But I might add socks as well, you know just to make the answer more interesting." (Tink: Lies. We know Rob has an aversion to socks...)

What is one thing you think you're good and one thing you're bad at?

Rob: "I'm really good at the game "words with friends", while I'm not good at the ice hockey simulation NHL 11 for PlayStation 3."

Which is the song on your iPod you listen to the most?

Rob: "Beside You by Van Morrison. iTunes tells me I've listened to it 53 times, but I reset the play count twice at least, so I might have listened to it like a hundred times."

Where would you like to live?

Rob: "In LA and NY, or maybe in both cities! (Tink: LA is on the table! Woot!)

Are you a techno addict or a romantic guy?

Rob: "I'm a romantic guy." (Tink: So sweet. I never believe him when he says he's not romantic.)

Which is more difficult to shoot, a sex scene or a laugh?

Rob: "It's hard to say. Both kinds of scenes turned up really well."

Rob: "And there's a Coca-Cola Zero, a pizza from yesterday, 2 day old Chinese food, and a Heineken." (Tink: Again, I love him hard.)

Rob: "I brush my teeth, have a shower and go walk my dog."

What is your dream?

Rob: "Be able to act, write, direct, edit and produce my own movies." (Tink: If you build it, they will come.)

Are you on any social networks?

Rob: "If "words with friends" is considered a social network then yes. But I do not have any twitter or facebook accounts. There are too many people pretending to be me. If you want to know me, you have to go to the cinema."

There are dark secrets in this movie, as in life. And there’s this idea of life-saving love, which I believe in. I’m not cheesy, but I have a romantic soul.

Do you get on well with girls?
I grew up with two older sisters, and I have a great respect for women. I hate the lack of prudishness, I get bored when people are ostentatious of their body. Sex and feeling for me walk side-by-side.

Your rock side: people say you spend nights with your friends listening to Tom Waits, Van Morrison and the late Jeff Buckley.
Music is a key aspect of my life. I wish I could play a movie about Buckley, his voice, his songwriting gave me a lot. I’m interested in his creativity, in his existence, even in his death by drowning in 1997, in the Mississippi.

What kind of use do you do of Internet?
A practical use. My favourite movie last year was The Social Network and one day I’d like to work with David Fincher. Everything he does is interesting, and he got the best out of an actor I really admire, Jesse Eisenberg.

What was different this time was his haircut—cropped on the side—which made him look younger.

In this chat, Robert talks about his anxiety over the coming end of the “Twilight” series, how he feels about the kissing scenes between Kristen Stewart’s Bella and Taylor Lautner’s Jacob, and a life-changing moment, among others.

Robert has come a long way from the first time we interviewed him on the London set of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” in which he played Cedric Diggory.
