From news.com.au, Robert Pattinson was surviving on tinned tuna and living in a basement:

ROBERT Pattinson took method acting to the next level for his role as a low-life robber in the upcoming film, Good Time. 

He eschewed the usual five star accommodation laid on for a celebrity of his calibre and chose to live in one of New York’s seediest neighbourhoods. 

“I literally lived in the same basement apartment [as the character] in Harlem. I never opened my curtains, didn’t change the sheets the entire time I was there, for those two months, and I would just sleep in my clothes,” he tells news.com.au. 

“There was this woman who lived upstairs and she kept trying to see what was going on because she thought I was such a weirdo. I kept really weird hours and I would run in and quickly close the curtains.” He laughs. 

“I was like this freak living in the bottom of the basement.” 

It’s impressive that he maintained this lifestyle — though it must have been difficult for those around him, not to mention, rather smelly? He laughs. “I was by myself the whole time. 

“I only ate cans of tuna the whole time. I probably have mercury poisoning now because I ate it just out of the can. That’s all that was there: tuna, hot sauce, and Nespresso capsules.” 

It seems his commitment paid off. At the Cannes Film Festival, where the audiences are tough at the best of times, Pattinson received a standing ovation when the end credits rolled. Quite a departure from his adored role in the Twilight franchise which made him an international celebrity but his acting skills were never taken seriously. 

I ask him whether he was surprised by the positive reaction he received towards his performance. 

“I am always way more surprised that I am considered a heart throb.” He laughs. “That really blows my mind. Before Twilight, I never got the good looking parts, ever. I was gangly,” he insists. 

“What’s weird is that you can do one movie and everything changes. I think that’s why I get a lot of weird reactions to me being in movies. You have someone’s face [associated with a beloved fictional role] and then people were so obsessed with that character. 

“In Twilight they were like, ‘You are so beautiful.’ Literally, the amount of times that I’ve been walking down the street, looking disgusting, and then someone who is a Twilight fan would say, ‘You’re so beautiful!’ And [I wanted to say], ’You are literally, actually not seeing reality,’” he says. 

“And there are other people who got furious over it, saying, ‘What are you talking about? He’s ugly!’” He sighs. “So stupid!” He looks at the ground, shakes his head and says, “I can’t believe I just talked about that.” 

Pattinson must have felt validated at the reaction he received on opening night at the glamorous festival. “It was crazy. People were crying. And this movie specifically was such a long shot. I am really proud of it. It’s a really nice feeling.” 

He’s hoping Good Time will change his perception in Hollywood. “Doing a role like this allows you more freedom on the next job. Hopefully people will think, ‘I want to take a risk on him.’ Before it was like, ‘Everyone thinks you are sh*t,’ and the director would be like, ‘No. No one would believe you in that kind of role.’ But if you have proven yourself a few times people will say, ‘Yeah, maybe we will go with him. Hopefully it will work out’,” he says, shrugging his shoulders. “But of course there are no guarantees.” 

Times have changed since he had paparazzi following his every move. “I really don’t have to think about the fans [anymore]. I live in London where it’s not really a thing. And also, over the last few years, just the nature of fame has changed so much. 

“I noticed even in LA, there’s hardly any paparazzi anymore because people take their own photos on Instagram. Nobody buys gossip magazines because everybody just looks on the internet,” he says. 

“So, if there’s no money in it, no one does it anymore. It’s great.” He grins. “In LA, there were areas where I would never dream of going to, like certain shopping streets. Five years ago, there would be 30 paparazzi on every street. I am just getting used to that and it’s so nice to let that fear of being spied on go away.” 

The last time we spoke was for his Dior commercial when he became the spokesman for the luxe brand. “Yeah, it’s funny. I remember signing up with Dior and I was so nervous about it because a few years ago when I decided to do it there weren’t that many actors doing that kind of thing on that level. They might do it in Japan or somewhere where they thought they wouldn’t get noticed. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be taken seriously as an actor.” 

But they dangled the carrot and Pattinson couldn’t resist. “They gave me final cut on the commercial.” He smiles. “Then the next year, literally every single actor in the world was doing one. So, it’s not really a moral conundrum anymore.” 

It seems his second job pays well. “Yes, it does. I am basically a model, that’s my other job.”

Love all these quotes from Rob and a nice variety. I'm also glad DiorRob is his steady second job. I hope he always keeps it for purely selfish reasons....

CANNES, France — Robert Pattinson has terrible, rotted teeth and is caked in dirt for his leading role in The Rover. The star could not be happier with the transformation after years of being a heart throb in the Twilight films.

"I am trying to eliminate any bit of vanity," says Pattinson of his grimed up role. "I want to avoid any opportunity to pose (for the camera). Or whatever. Because if you get that opportunity to pose, you will probably take it."

The results have been impressive. Pattinson has earned some of the best reviews of his career in the David Michod film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and opens in the USA June 13.

The post-apocolyptic story features a grimy Pattinson joining up with a former soldier (Guy Pearce) who is trying to get back his last precious possession on Earth — his stolen car.

The unglamorous lead role, along with a supporting role in David Cronenberg's film A Map to the Stars, has earned Pattinson a return trip to the Cannes festival which he attended for the first time in 2012 (with Cronenberg's Cosmopolis).

Pattinson says the 2012 trip set in motion a game plan to return to Cannes as much as possible.

"I decided right then I wanted to get every film into Cannes. It was something I have been specifically aiming for, 100%," says Pattinson. "It's just the best place to promote movies and this festival has this cachet."

In Cannes 2012, the press conference monitor had to warn journalists before Pattinson took to the stage that he would not entertain questions about vampires.

This year, Pattinson seems to have finally gotten past that. He feels like a fixture at Cannes rather than a novelty. The word Twilight was not even mentioned in his press appearances, even if one Japanese television reporter asked Pattinson to simply say something to his fans back in Japan during a press conference (it was awkward).

"It's strange. I have a disassociation now. It's odd to live that same life," says Pattinson of his Twilight past. "But I have always had that disassociation. I've never understood the crowds screaming. This is a job."

The Rover also gave Pattinson the distinct advantage of being deep in the Australian Outback, where Pattinson was able to shoot a movie outdoors without fear of paparazzi jumping out of bushes.

"So there wasn't some jackass trying to get a picture of me making a stupid face," says Pattinson. "We were in a town of 50 people. They wouldn't know who to sell a picture to even if they wanted to."

He says the freedom allowed him to feel completely at ease out in the open and aided his performance. "It changed the whole way I worked completely," says Pattinson. "It was totally losing self-consciousness. It was like working underwater. It was nice."

He talks excitedly about working with director Olivier Assayas on their next, untitled film.

"His stuff always gets into Cannes and it's such a great script," says Pattinson. "But I don't want to speak too soon."

The various fashion magazines are reporting Dior's statement about Rob being the new face of Dior Homme. We'll update this post as more new info comes in.

Robert Pattinson has officially been announced as the face of Dior Homme.

After months of speculation about the star's rumoured partnership with the brand, the House of Dior has released an official statement today confirming the campaign.
They said: 'The House of Dior is delighted to announce that actor Robert Pattinson is to be the new face of Dior Homme fragrance.'

Cue screams of delight from the entire Marie Claire office...
The statement then goes on to praise Robert's successful career in a number of high-profile movies, saying: 'Since his first notable role in 2005 in the fourth Harry Potter sequel, film star Robert Pattinson has more recently come to be known through his role in the runaway box office success, the Twilight saga.

'He has since proven the scope of his acting talents by choosing films as varied as Remember Me by Allen Coulter, Water for Elephants by Francis Lawrence, in which he starred alongside Reese Witherspoon, or with his role as Bel-Ami, the famous Maupassant character.
'In the ultimate tribute to his talent, David Cronenberg chose him to star in his latest picture, Cosmopolis, adapted from the novel by Don de Lillo. A striking role as a golden boy which premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

'He has recently completed filming David Michod¹s The Rover in Australia with Guy Pearce and will soon be on set for David Cronenberg¹s next picture, Maps to the Stars. Following on he will star in Hold on to Me, directed by James Marsh and co-starring Carey Mulligan.'

The first shot released by the fashion house shows Robert looking utterly gorgeous in a stubbly, blue-eyed close-up. Hewears a red checked shirt and looks perfectly groomed.
Rumours in Hollywood have claimed that the campaign for Rob's ad was 'steamy' and featured the actor surrounded by barely-clothed women in a bed. Here's hoping that's to come…

Dior Homme adds: 'Today we are excited to announce that he will join the privileged circle of Dior faces. Photographed by American artist Nan Goldin and filmed by French director Romain Gavras, this new Dior Homme communication campaign is currently broadcast exclusively in Europe (except UK) and Asia (except China and Japan).'

BUT don't panic!
Rob has the BEST fans for sharing so I have NO doubt we'll see this one way or another!!

The Globe & Mail spoke to Rob and David and they talked about US promotion for Cosmopolis:

“With big movies, it’s usually six or seven countries,” Pattinson says. “But this is way harder getting people to see. For smaller films, they just say, ‘Oh, just New York and London’ or ‘New York and L.A.’ I don’t really understand it.”

“We have the U.S. to come,” Cronenberg reminds him. “I’ve heard both July and August from the U.S. We will be doing New York and L.A.”

David is dropping July and August and as I told you guys yesterday, the producer told me the release date (first half of August and it's a double digit).

Japan reviews Water for Elephants: "Robert Pattinson in the lead role is excellent"



We've already seen Water for Elephants multiple times and own the Bluray and DVDs at this point. However, the film is just coming out in Japan next week (Feb. 25). Makes me not feel so bad about Bel Ami. :) That's a lie. 

Since critics tend to give Rob a hard time, reading a positive review is worth our attention even if the film is long gone in our countries. The Japan Times starts out kind of WTF but keep going (excerpted):

What is it about Robert Pattinson that makes him slightly annoying? Despite his 18-carat movie-star status built on his vampire role in the "Twilight" series, despite the rumor that he's slated as the next Brad Pitt (er, really?) and has the lanky, boyish charm to back it up, Pattinson remains several notches below Total Heartthrob status.

My guess is that this brooding lad fairly oozes with first-world angst (relationship problems, identity problems, anger at the high price of organic chicken, etc.), which, at this point in history, kind of tests your patience. I mean, what's he got to complain about?

So "Water for Elephants comes as a surprise, because Pattinson in the lead role is, to put it bluntly, excellent. Director Francis Lawrence ("I am Legend") deploys Pattinson's particular privileged-but-unhappy aura to full advantage, and the movie reaps heaps of benefits from his skittishness, his subtle note of unreliability and that calculated lopsided grin. Plus, he takes a punch in the face, which is more than a little gratifying to witness. Win-win, all round.

Yeah. Critics sometimes can't help themselves with the little digs but the "excellent" remark made me beam and go "HA! You'll eat your words soon enough, bitter critics!" It might take baby steps for some but WFE was the step for this snarky reviewer.

CW: Well, we were staying at a so-so hotel, then somebody invited us to dinner at the Relais San Bruno, and it was paradise, and we were like, We gotta pack our crap -- we're all over this place.
