James Marsh Chats About 'Hold On To Me' & How He Was Excited To Work With Robert Pattinson



So Tink went to a screening of 'The Theory of Everything' last night (which in case you didn't know is directed by James Marsh).
There was a Q&A afterwards and after introducing herself as a fan blogger for Hold On To Me she got to have a little informal chat with him about the movie.

Here's what went down (in her words):

"I got a chance to speak to James Marsh tonight about Hold On To Me. I went to a screening for The Theory of Everything and I spoke to him after his Q&A finished. I shared my disappointment that the film was stalled and he felt the same. It was great to talk to him and see him light up about the story. He said he was so excited to have Rob and Carey on board and because they're all British, they were going to have such fun with the dark humor of the story and this subversive look at American culture. He also said they had Adam Driver for the other role - the main guy with Carey's character.

Unfortunately what happened is the typical story with indies. Money. It couldn't be secured and JM was very bummed about this because he loves the story so much and was baffled they couldn't secure financing in time when he had Carey and Rob locked in for a period. TPTB balked at Adam Driver but JM and I both exchanged a look at that, saying and where is he now (Star Wars, Emmy nominee, etc). So basically the convo was both us going ugh and that sucks and this would have been amazing...in so many words. More eloquent but sometimes a good UUUUGH gets the point across. While I didn't have a large attachment to the film since Rob's role was pertinent but small, I was personally bummed the film didn't get off the ground after seeing how enthused JM was for the project and for the actors. And my high regard for him coming on the heels of watching a wonderful film and hearing a diverse and intelligent discussion afterwards. I'm disappointed Rob didn't get a chance to work with JM since we know he wanted to and it's clear why. The way JM was talking - it sounded like he's keeping hope alive for the story because he loved the script so much but I was left with the impression the cast would be different.

I hope Rob gets to work with JM like he wanted to. Maybe it'll be a different project at a different time. If it's meant to be for Rob, it will be."

So there you have it. I think we all pretty much knew at this stage that it wasn't happening since there hasn't been any movement or news about it in a while. It's a pity, but what will be will be. We know that there are great things ahead for Rob and we're so excited to follow him on his journey every step of the way.

"Pruss helped Ingelsby get his Low Dweller spec seen around town, and this is his third project with the writer, after Hold On To Me, which James Marsh is directing this fall, and The Signal, which is being developed by Paramount."

The Rob films that are currently cooking are Queen Of The Desert, Mission: Blacklist, Hold On To Me and Life. Hold On To Me remains on the back burner but still has positive buzz. Excerpt from Hollywood.com:

We don't know too much about this next project, but we're excited to see Mulligan alongside Robert Pattinson, who's well on his way to shedding that Twilight image. Oscar-winner James Marsh is directing the film, and it looks like we can expect good things.

Life is still on schedule for February 2014 as far as we know. Dane DeHaan was named one of the 10 actors to watch by Variety so it's great to see a future costar of Rob's attracting positive attention.

The latest movement is from Queen Of The Desert and Mission: Blacklist. Cassian Elwes, QOTD producer, tweeted about the possibility for a January 2014 start date:

We'll see how this holds up. The last update for Mission: Blacklist had a January 2014 start as well. Embankment Films has January 2014 on their website and an article from ScreenDaily, announcing the arrival of Sara May to Embankment, reported MB to be green-lit and financed for the new year:

Financed and green-lit for production next year are The Dressmaker starring Kate Winslet, and Mission Blacklist starring Robert Pattinson

So that's where we're at. Some juggling going on.


Rob still seems on board with QOTD but now there appears to be a conflict of start dates with QOTD and MB. We'll keep you posted! When we know, you'll know.

Rob totally looks like he'd be fun to work with, eat with, laugh with, wash a car with, plant veggies with, throw a ball with, grocery shop with, (fill in the blank) with....you get the point.



From an interview with a German publication, the translated excerpt when Carey Mulligan mentions Rob and Hold On To Me:

Reporter: Playing with Robert Pattinson in a thriller is a still current project?  

Carey Mulligan: Yes, we haven't lose hope yet. So far, this has not worked, but I find the script is fantastic and working with Rob would be great fun. 'Hold On To Me' is an independent production, and as usual, there are many obstacles to overcome until funding/financing is secure.

Carey last told Josh Horowitz from MTV that the film is hanging tight on the back burner. The window of opportunity must have passed with Rob's second half of 2013 looking full but fingers crossed for later. We'll keep you posted!

We wanted to keep you up to date with what's been going on so here's a little round up of news!



First off EOne (who as you know are the distributors in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia/NZ) for "Maps To The Stars" are already getting excited about it, even though it's not even in production yet. Well we can't blame them really, we're pretty excited too.
Anyway they took to their twitter today with this......

Next up, as you know Rob was in New York for a couple of days, well SO was Carey Mulligan (who as you know just happens to be Rob's co-star in "Hold on to Me")
Lainey Gossip  reckons she know why.......

“Carey’s next movie is called Hold On To Me with Robert Pattinson. Pattinson just arrived back in LA yesterday after a few days in New York for meetings on the project.”

As we said it's "gossip" so take with a pitch of salt but it's the kind of gossip that I would actually be really happy about if it were true!

And FINALLY you may remember a while back Guy Pearce teased that Rob would attend the "Iron Man 3" Premiere in LA. We're still not sure if he was just teasing or not.

Sad news for folks that were looking forward to Rachel Weisz working with David Cronenberg and Rob. She shared with Belfast Telegraph (UK) that she has no plans to be in Maps To The Stars:

Rachel also denied stories that she will be working with David Cronenberg in Maps To The Stars with Robert Pattinson and Viggo Mortensen. "I'm not in that. I'm unemployed for now," she joked.

I'm not heartbroken. Maybe Rachel and Rob aren't destined to work together. OR third time is the charm? As long as Rob's still in something, I'm happy. But we can light a candle for Rachel in the DR. ;) There's no word yet on when the film will go into production.

Also, The Rover producer, Liz Watts and director, David Michôd, put out a sweet thank you to the people of Quorn in the February 2013 Flinders Ranges Council Newsletter. They said Rob has been impressed by Quorn!



Lastly, no Rob mention, but the screenwriter for Hold On To Me, also honored with a placement for the script on the 2012 Black List, spoke to Going Into The Story, about the film. Click HERE to read Part 3 of Brad Ingelsby's interview with the mention!

That's the latest! The Rover will be wrapping soon and it's not set in stone what's next for WorkingRob.  The most recent update has him starting Mission: Blacklist in April. Time will tell!

Finally, Marsh has revealed the actor he wanted to complete the cast: "I would hire an actor in the series GIRLS, Adam Driver. It is a great actor, yet little known. This will form a great triangle with Robert and Carey. "A great actor indeed already seen in J. EDGAR, and soon to be in Steven Spielberg's LINCOLN, Inside Llewyn Davis of Coen, THE F WORD with Daniel Radcliffe or FRANCES HA Noah Baumbach.

On a side note, Marsh won his Oscar for the documentary, Man On Wire. It's available on instant play for Netflix and I encourage you to check it out if you're a subscriber. It's an amazing film. Last but by no means least it was time for the man himself, Mr. Pattinson. Pattinson is without doubt the most handsome actor I've had the pleasure of meeting. He's also the friendliest and the most unaffected by fame (sorry Joseph Gordon-Levitt, you've been relegated to my no. 2 spot). Giggling along as he figured out what he was saying, as the words, uncensored, tumbled out of his mouth, "R-Patz" remains as grateful as ever for the platform this has given him. Then he willingly posed for a pic while I said to myself "Robert Pattinson's arm is around you, take it all in", before expressing his wonder at my weird 3D phone. I then demonstrated how it takes 3D photos as he seemed genuinely amazed, to the point of getting a headache. I told him it was a HTC Android, so if you're reading this, HTC, I'll assume my cheque's in the post. With one last "Have a good day, nice to meet you" from him and a "See you soon" (um, doubtful) from me it was over, just like that.

New York Times best-selling author of The Fault In Our Stars, John Green, reblogged the gif with this comment:

A little trivia: The Fault In Our Stars film will be produced by Wyck Godfrey.

Moving into film news, this doesn't have anything to do with Rob directly but some of you asked about the role Jude Law will be playing in Queen of the Desert. The producer, Cassian Elwes, revealed the info on twitter to fansite, @QOTDfilm (this is a fellow fansite, not the one Kate and I work on):

'Henry' is Henry Cadogan. A British diplomat that Gertrude Bell fell in love with!

This film continues to intrigue. The Playlist fanboys said "damn, this cast is shaping up pretty nicely..." and Screen Crush is ready for the maddness Herzog brings - "Knowing Herzog, Bell is surely going to have a brush or two with madness."

A couple of Rob's other film projects got some quick buzz on Saturday from the American Film Market, still underway (ends Wednesday). Variety had a quick mention for The Rover and Hold On To Me. Excerpt:

Solid rather than spectacular -- that's the consensus so far among buyers and sellers at the halfway point of the 33rd edition of the American Film Market, with more than 2,000 projects for sale.

FilmNation topped Glen Basner said that the first half of AFM had been a scramble with "The Rover," "Nebraska," "Hold on to Me" and "Genius"

That sounds promising. Folks want to gobble up TR and HOTM :) We can't blame them. We want all these projects gobbled up and we pray daily that distribution is better than what we've experienced in the past with Rob's indies. Either way, we'll be there every step of the way supporting him. :)

Hold On To Me made Variety's list of films that has AFM (American Film Market) buzzing and Film Nation released more information about the film.

Hold On To Me is written by Brad Ingelsby (Out of the Furnace) and is an electrifying thriller based on the extraordinary true story of a femme fatale who kidnaps and ransoms the town’s richest man. The film will be produced by Alexandra Milchan alongside Todd Field and Indian Paintbrush’s Steven Rales and Mark Roybal. 

Mulligan plays Nancy, a small town girl who callously leaves her boyfriend Jimmy (Pattinson) behind to chase a modelling career in New York City, breaking his heart in the process. This is clearly Carey's vehicle but how great does it sound?? I'm so excited for Rob to be a part of it. Hell, I'm excited for Rob to be a part of all his upcoming films. He's working with great artists and the stories are so compelling. We have much to look forward to, DR. :)
