Robert Pattinson talks to Indiewire about Claire Denis, his upcoming feminist western comedy, working with Mark Rylance and MORE!
Great interview with Rob about his career and the directors he chooses!
From Indiewire, "Robert Pattinson on Picking Under-the-Radar Directors and Why Claire Denis is the Most ‘Authentic Punk’ He’s Ever Met":
It’s not unusual for actors after they’ve become movie stars to use their clout to make their passion projects or work with directors they admire. What makes Robert Pattinson’s post-“Twilight” career choices so fascinating is he hasn’t reached for A-List directors, studio projects with an awards pedigree, or personal pet projects he’s determined to shepherd. Instead, he’s sought out celebrated directors whose work is slightly below-the-radar and outside the mainstream of American cinema.
“I really like the hunt,” said Pattinson in an interview with IndieWire when he was at the Savannah Film Festival receiving a Maverick Award. “I like finding directors who haven’t been fully realized by the wider world yet.”
In the case of the Josh and Benny Safdie, who directed Pattinson in “Good Time,” Pattinson saw an image from their previous film on IndieWire that caught his attention. “As soon as I saw the trailer for ‘Heaven Knows What,’ I knew what they were like,” said Pattinson. “I was actively looking for directors who just had a very wild, out-of-control feeling. I realize quite quickly the type of [directors] I want to work with.”
Pattinson said he puts a great deal of time into tracking smaller and international films—mainly by reading reviews coming out of festivals.
“It’s so difficult to keep up with everything that is coming out – half the movies I like aren’t even released in this country,” said Pattinson. “That’s the one good thing about being with a big agency [WME], you’re constantly asking them to somehow track down a streaming link. The annoying thing is a majority of films I end up watching on my phone.”
Pattinson said there is no “wish list” of directors, but he reaches out to the ones that interest him when he comes across their work. In the case of the Safdies, there wasn’t a natural role for Pattinson in their upcoming “Uncut Gems,” so the brothers wrote “Good Time” for the actor based on aspects of the actor’s personality that they saw while spending time with him in private, mainly characteristics that they hadn’t been seen from him in public or on the big screen.
“I definitely have a kind of mania sometimes, that not a lot of people see,” said Pattinson. “It happens when I get inspired by something that I think that [the Safdies] wanted to use as part of the character. That’s why I wanted to work with them as well. I’d done a lot of movies where they’re quite reactive parts and mainly quite still. There was a comfort there for me and I really wanted to break out of that pattern.”
In the case of “Lost City of Z,” Pattinson said he had been desperate to work with director James Gray – inspired by the filmmaker’s early collaborations with Joaquin Phoenix (“The Yards,” “We Own the Night,” “Two Lovers”) – on a number of different projects. After seven years of possible collaborations, he was willing to do any role Gray had for him. In the case of “Lost City of Z,” it meant shooting in 100-degree jungle heat in a quiet, supporting role in which Pattinson disappears behind a beard and into the story’s backdrop as the film progresses. That idea of hiding or escaping into an unrecognizable role, as he did more prominentaly in “Good Time,” appeals to Pattinson above all else.
“I don’t like bombastic performances,” he said, then laughed. “I just sort of like convincing people that I’m not what people thought I was initially…It’s psychologically healthy for me as well. Otherwise, if I’m too trapped in myself, then I get really depressed.”

What's your next big project?Harmony also shared good details with Bullett also back in September:
I can’t go into super specifics, but it’s like, it’s gonna be my most next-level movie. This is actually the first time I’m talking about it. It’s kind of a sprawling revenge film. It’s pretty, like, full on. I’m gonna put everything I know as a film maker into it. I think it’s gonna be a pretty substantial film. I’m gonna shoot it in Miami right after the New Year.
Did [Al Pacino] give you any tips on the Southern Gothic gangster project you’re working on?
Well actually, it’s all done! The script is written. I’m putting the cast together right now, it’s going to be my most ambitious film, and I’m really just going to go for it. It’s some next level shit. It’s a revenge movie, a sprawling, very intense… I don’t want to give away too much, but we’re probably going to start shooting in Miami after the New Year. I’m goin’ for it.
Any particular reason why Miami?
Yeah, just the way the sky looks.
And you’ve got Robert Pattinson locked down? Now we have some official casting announcements made. Jamie Foxx and Benicio Del Toro.
It’ll have a substantial cast.
Variety:
“Spring Breakers” director Harmony Korine, for the first time in his career, has cast an Oscar-winning actor to star in his movie. Sources tell Variety that Jamie Foxx is attached to topline ensemble gangster drama “The Trap.” Korine will write and direct the feature, which the controversial filmmaker behind “Kids” and “Trash Humpers” has described as “his most ambitious film to date.” Benicio del Toro is also attached to star. John Lesher and Charles-Marie Anthonioz are producing the film. Plot details on “The Trap” are being kept under wraps. The revenge pic is expected to shoot early next year in Miami. Following the success of of his last project, “Spring Breakers,” which earned Korine and star James Franco critical acclaim, more A-list talent should circle the gangster drama.THR:
Benicio Del Toro is joining Jamie Foxx in The Trap, a Southern revenge movie written and to be directed by Spring Breakers helmer Harmony Korine. The script is a crime thriller centering on two childhood friends now in their mid-to-late 30s — one of whom is very successful and the other has spent the majority of his adult life in jail. On the eve of a big recognition for the successful man, the other is released from jail and determined to get even. John Lesher and Charles-Marie Anthonioz are producing the film, which is slated to shoot early next year.Rob isn't officially cast yet but we'll keep you posted. The Childhood of a Leader and The Lost City of Z still seem to be on Rob's slate but no specific dates for production are locked.

James Franco talks Robert Pattinson, working together with mutual friend Harmony Korine and QOTD
It's been a while since we've seen Josh getting the 411 for us regarding a Rob film. He sat down with James Franco at TIFF and chatted a little bit about Queen of the Dessert, how James met Rob and the possibility of them working together with mutual friend, director Harmony Korine. You might recall Rob's praise of Harmony before HERE but here's the except from the interview conducted summer 2012.

Robert Pattinson in Premiere (France) Nov. 2012:
I'm thinking of someone like Harmony Korine, in particular, whom I find particularly brilliant. He showed me his new film this summer, Spring Breakers, which I loved. I wouldn't want to jinx it, but I feel that it can really be a hit. I want to with directors like him, people who have spent their lives refusing to compromise, whatever the cost.

Another rumored project of Franco's is director Werner Herzog's "Queen of the Desert," which centers around the friendship between T.E. Lawrence and Gertrude Bell, and stars Robert Pattinson and, potentially, Nicole Kidman (after Naomi Watts reportedly dropped out).
"I hope. I met with Werner about it. I've known Werner for a while," Franco said. "He's a huge 'Spring Breakers' fan. The talks about that movie really started after he saw 'Spring Breakers' and gave me one of the best phone calls ever. He called me up with Harmony and just was raving about Alien. He said, 'This movie is like the most important movie of the times. When people look back on 2013, they won't look at Obama's re-election speech, they will look to 'Spring Breakers' to tell us about these times, hundreds of years from now."
True Francophiles know the actor has had something of a fascination with Robert Pattinson and "The Twilight Saga" for years, but "Queen of the Desert" wouldn't be his first meeting with the British actor, apparently. "I actually met Robert through Harmony," Franco revealed. "Maybe I'll work with him. It's supposed to happen maybe later this year. I don't think I have any scenes with Pattinson in 'Queen of the Desert.' Harmony wants to work with him. He's a nice guy, so I'd be willing."Source: MTV

Robert Pattinson talks about his future plans, Mission: Blacklist, show business and more
Rob spoke to Metro about Mission: Blacklist, the choice to film in Iraq, listening to the negative, show biz culture and more. Good quotes and I like him joking about trying to find a film that more than one person will see. He's cute, loving his indies but wanting something with mainstream appeal too. We'll be there whatever it is. :) Here's his portion excerpted from Metro:

Good quotes and I like him joking about trying to find a film that more than one person will see. He's cute, loving his indies but wanting something with mainstream appeal too. We'll be there whatever it is. :) Here's his portion excerpted from Metro:
Starring as Edward Cullen, the moody vampire at the center of the "Twilight" series, Robert Pattinson has achieved worldwide stardom -- something that doesn't sit well with the British actor. "I have a weird mental disorder where the only thing I can ever hear is the negative stuff," he tells us. "It doesn't matter how many people say anything complimentary, it's always the negative."
You can't blame him. This summer, the 26 year-old was at the center of some pretty negative headlines: His girlfriend and co-star Kristen Stewart reportedly cheated on him with her "Snow White" director Rupert Sanders. Are they on? Off? Rather than obsess about it, Pattinson would rather focus on his career after this last film in the series, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ---Part 2." Of his fame, he says: "Maybe I feel like I don't particularly deserve it yet, so I really want to do something worthwhile in my head and struggle for a long time."
What drives him
As evidenced by recent choices -- including David Cronenberg's challenging "Cosmopolis," which featured him getting a prostate exam -- he's not afraid of risk. "I signed up for a lot of stuff in the last year. I was really fixated on working with a lot of people who are kind of dangerous," he says. "The business part of show business has really just taken a big s-- on the show aspect of it, and so I think anyone who has any visibility should be trying to do something that is really, really subversive. I think it would be interesting trying to get really subversive stuff into the mainstream. You're in the cinema not just as a consumer but as a participant."
It's that sensibility that led him to sign up for the lead in "Mission: Blacklist," a film to be made in Iraq next year. "That's probably out of anybody's comfort zone," Pattinson offers of the film, which is based on a true story. "It's about this guy call Eric Maddox who was an Army interrogator who almost single-handedly found Saddam Hussein. No one really knows the story of it, and the story's absolutely amazing and kind of hilarious in some ways and bizarre."
Comfort zonesThat project teams Pattinson with French director Jean-Stephane Sauvaire, who used real Liberian child soldiers for his last film. "I think that's like his thing," says Pattinson. "I wanted him to be in his comfort zone, so we were both pushing, saying we need to shoot this in Iraq -- that's the whole point."
You can tell where his passions lie by the fact that, during this interview, the actor talks more about "Mission: Blacklist" than "Twilight." But promotion for "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" must be done. The story finds his Edward and Stewart's Bella protecting their child from killer vampires. It's already predicted to be the highest-grossing effort in the series. And the actor is busy lining up another high-profile project, lest he lose his ability to get the riskier ones made. "This year I'm thinking I should probably try to do a movie which at least one person will see," he says, "so I'm trying to figure that out now."
MariaUK proposed that we do a book club here for MB. We were going to have one on the Mission: Blacklist blog that Kate and I run but we're all much chattier over here, aren't we. ;) Keep a look out if you're interested. It will likely start up after the holiday season. In the meantime, if you haven't already, you can purchase the book HERE.
