Indiewire has a new interview with Rob too.

Excerpt from Indiewire, Robert Pattinson on the Male Gaze, Playing a Psychopath, and the Status of His Many Upcoming Arthouse Movies:
The actor told IndieWire that he didn't quite know what he was getting himself into with the Zellner brothers' oddball western, but that's sort of his thing these days.
When Robert Pattinson first received the script for the David and Nathan Zellners’ “Damsel,” a quirky, inverted western in which various cockeyed suitors pine for love of a woman disinterested in their advances, he passed. “It just seemed like one of those things that’s never going to get financing, so it just didn’t really register with me,” he said.

A few weeks later, he went to see “Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter” in theaters, not realizing it came from the same sibling director pair. He called his agent, eager to meet whoever was behind it.

“He was like, yeah, you just got offered a role for their new movie and you didn’t meet with them,” Pattinson recalled. He circled back on “Damsel,” which sees him entering strange terrain for an actor whose penchant for stone-faced roles has evolved from the “Twilight” franchise to auteur-driven work like David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis” and the Safdie brothers’ “Good Time.”
As Samuel Alabaster, the foolishly overconfident pioneer eager to rescue Penelope (Mia Wasichowska) from her supposed captors even though she may not want the help, Pattinson found himself in the unlikely position of a comedic role. That was something he didn’t expect when he signed up, in part because the melancholic “Kumiko” — in which a Japanese woman, believing the plot of “Fargo” to be real, gets lost in Nebraska — had a totally different feel. “Kumiko’ is one of the strangest movies ever,” Pattinson said. “To have such an odd movie and make it coherent and kind of touching, the aesthetic of it is really elegant of it, and kind of cool, too — they had a lot going on at the same time. Connecting that with the script for ‘Damsel’ felt really left field to me.”

When he read “Damsel,” he said, “it didn’t read necessarily as a straight comedy, it just felt really odd.” Still trying to figure how to classify the movie after production wrapped, he dug back into the Zellners’ filmography and watched “Kid-Thing,” their dark, lyrical story of a young girl who hears a voice down the well. Unlike “Kumiko,” the Zellners’ first project on a bigger budget, “Kid-Thing” conveys their off-beat, deadpan humor in clearer terms. He recognized that while “Kumiko” had a “stately” feel to it, the Austin-based filmmakers’ other movies were “more ramshackle.”

Still, “Damsel” doesn’t signal some new phase of Pattinson’s career in studio rom-coms. While Samuel commands the first act of the movie, his obsession with finding the girl of his dreams required the actor play it straight. “The guy is completely psychotic,” Pattinson said. “He’s never done anything more nefarious than annoying people, but his capacity for delusion is kind of frightening. He’s not a bumbling moron. His actions are very premeditated. He’s deeply, deeply mad. I was approaching it like that.”
In one standout moment from the movie, Samuel performs an entire song on acoustic guitar that he’s written for Penelope. Searching for a way to categorize the movie he was making, he hoped to make the crew laugh. “There were scenes where nobody was laughing,” he said. “I was trying to get a reaction from people. With that song, I finally saw the boom operator smiling, and it was the biggest relief.”

NEW Damsel CLIP: Robert Pattinson Serenades Us With Honeybun

NEW Damsel CLIP: Robert Pattinson Serenades Us With Honeybun

Sure what more could you want on a Wednesday

From Entertainment Weekly:
There’s something about singing in front of an audience that makes Robert Pattinson “terrifyingly nervous,” the actor told EW.

“No matter whether you’re playing a character or not, there’s something about singing where you’re naked,” he said. “I hadn’t sung in front of anybody for years before that.”

Pattinson, 32, who rocketed to fame as a certain brooding, sexy vampire, delivers his funniest performance to date in David and Nathan Zellner’s Damsel, playing a gangly, bumbling wannabe cowboy named Samuel, searching for his kidnapped fiancé Penelope (Mia Wasikowska) in the Wild West wilderness with the help of a hapless preacher (David Zellner).

“I wanted to do a full-on Jim Carrey out-of-control thing…proper slapstick. I remember doing the first take on the first day and I was screaming,” the actor said.

“I think I was supposed to be playing it serious, and I just couldn’t do it. So it just became this goofy thing.”

The biggest challenge was not adopting a drawling Western twang or acting in the heat of the desert while wearing a thick suit, he said. Instead it was the scene above, where Samuel decides to sing a sweet little ditty he penned for his fiancée called “My Honeybun.”

“That was the only thing in the whole movie where I was really nervous, I have no idea why. My hand was shaking so much,” he said.

“It’s such a weird little moment … it’s so weird and earnest and sweet at the same time.”

It’s been 10 years since Pattinson played teen vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen in the first Twilight and amassed millions of fans. After saying goodbye to the role, Pattinson said his “lucky break” came in 2012 with David Cronenberg’s trippy Cosmopolis, in which he played a cocky billionaire. Since then, he’s eschewed franchises and blockbusters, instead diving into underdog roles like the slow, naive Reynolds in David Michôd’s survival drama The Rover (2014) and the frantic Connie in 2017’s urban thriller Good Time.

“I do find a lot of my characters are alienated. I definitely think I’ve gravitated towards that more after I got famous,” he explained. “It’s like, I can relate.”

Pattinson confessed that he used to be shy, but by allowing himself to relax and take risks as an actor, he’s open to playing the fool. The Dior ambassador is actually a giggler — he giggles as he quips how he’s been forgetting people’s names now that he’s in his ripe old 30s, or when he orders a “tiny English muffin” at lunch.

Meanwhile, the Twilight mania has faded and while his name still pops up in tabloids, he says fan interactions are much more manageable nowadays.

“It was always just people who were trying to make money out of it because then they never left you alone,” he said about being tabloid fodder.

“If someone’s making money out of something, you’re like, ‘Nah man, this is my career and you’re literally stealing from me and because of some loophole in the law, you’re allowed to do this,’ and so it’s one of the most frustrating (things), it just makes you feel very impotent … Now, it’s really nice because it’s not the hysteria so people come up to you and they’re nice to you. Whenever someone asks for a picture, it’s because they like you.”

Now that he’s locked in his first comedic role, the actor said he’s definitely looking to exercise his funny bone on screen, developing projects that fuse comedy and drama.

“I’m trying to choose roles where audiences wouldn’t have preconceived expectations of how those characters would behave,” he said.

Thanks Flavia

From People.com:
Robert Pattinson is learning the hard way that not every woman needs rescuing.

The actor stars in Damsel alongside Mia Wasikowska — a western written and directed by David Zellner and Nathan Zellner that throws into question the craziest things people do for love. Pattinson plays Samuel Alabaster, a pioneer who journeys across the country to be with Wasikowska’s Penelope.

But things don’t go according to plan when he gets there, and Penelope welcomes him with the sight of a shotgun pointed straight at him. In the exclusive clip above, the two face off after Pattinson says he bought her a miniature horse because it’s her favorite animal, but she has something else to say about it.

David and Nathan said Pattinson and Wasikowska jumped into the unconventional characters immediately.

“With Rob and Mia, we liked that they’d never done roles like this before and that they were excited about the challenges of the characters and unconventional structure of the film,” the directors tell PEOPLE. “They quickly dialed into the tone we were going for, the balance of humor and pathos, and it made our job easy.”

Thanks Nancy for the heads up!
