PREVIEW: Robert Pattinson talks to Total Film about Tenet

GamesRadar shared an exclusive excerpt from Rob's interview with Total Film for Tenet:
Describing Tenet, Robert Pattinson makes the analogy of a plate-spinner. “There’s a point where you’re like, it’s kind of cool, and it becomes so insane that it’s almost frightening,” he laughs. “I sound like such a moron talking about this stuff. Because on top of the, uh – how would I even say this? Quite advanced theoretical physics; I think I’m allowed to say that – it’s just got a billion different ways to read it.” He gasps, breathless. “It’s so complicated; if it wasn’t Chris Nolan doing it, you’d be like, ‘This is an impossible movie.’”
More extensive interviews will be in the issue. You can grab the magazine digitally or on stands on Friday!

 photo article-2651935-1E9266D400000578-188_634x434.jpg

Exciting news Total Film are going to be hosting a Google Hangout with Robert Pattinson & Guy Pearce on Wednesday August 6th at 2pm (BST) and they'll be LiveStreming it on the day too so you'll be able to watch!!!!!

Details of how to submit your questions:

We're rather excited to announce that we'll be hosting a Google Hangout with the stars of sci-fi drama The Rover, Msrs Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce.
Directed by Animal Kingdom's David Michod, The Rover is a gripping tale of two men forced together to survive in a dystopian Australian outback. Tense, terse and sparse, it's a serious departure for Pattinson and acts as an acting tour de force for Pearce.
We're hosting a live Google Hangout with them both Wednesday 6 August at 2pm for a 20 minute chat. We want YOUR questions to ask the cast. To be in with a chance of chatting to them direct, we need you to:

1. Follow the Total Film Google+ page (if you have a Gmail or YouTube account, you also have a Google+ account).
2. Say you'll be watching on the Google Hangout itself.
3. Submit your question in the comments section of the Google Hangout - and then we'll pick a lucky few on Monday 4 August.

Livestream will broadcast here (but we'll repost it again on Wednesday;))

"He's had a very different existence as an actor than I did. He's just this megastar. I don't know if he struggles with feeling like a valuable actor, as I did, but he shouldn't, if he does. He's amazing.

"On the second day he was doing the scene where he falls out of the truck and he's sitting there bleeding and I was watching it on the monitor. I looked at David and said, 'Wow, he's really good, isn't he?' What he was offering up with regard to the power shifts between us meant I had such great stuff to work with."

Robert Pattinson's The Rover makes must-see lists and his "superb performance" continues to be praised!

Robert Pattinson's The Rover makes must-see lists and his "superb performance" continues to be praised!

Access Hollywood had a must-see summer indie movie segment on yesterday and I loved seeing Alicia Malone give The Rover some love. If you don't know Alicia Malone, check out her past Rob interviews HERE.

Entertainment Weekly also included The Rover on their must-see summer art-house movie list, saying "both actors astound."

Check out more reviews that we liked for The Rover and you can always catch up HERE, under our The Rover Reviews tag.

The Upcoming (5 stars)
The strength of this movie is its setting in a near-apocalyptic future yet not so far from what our actual world is becoming. The movie is very minimalist, and so is the language, which leads to amazing performances, especially from Pearce and Pattinson. They’re strong, fragile, sad and angry at the same time. The tension between them is there all along, yet they manage to create a beautiful relationship from their two broken souls.
From the score to the cinematography, from the lights to the framing, from the script to the choice of the cast, everything hails Michôd’s work as a great achievement.
Total Film:
The technical credits are first-rate and both Pearce and Pattinson convince in their roles, the former mad-eyed and clenched, the latter confused of mind and slurred of tongue and possessed of a touching purity. Between this and his work for David Cronenberg, Pattinson is suggesting his career post-Twilight will sparkle like Edward Cullen’s skin. Michod, meanwhile, confirms he’s a filmmaker of considerable talents.
FMV magazine (3.5 stars):
Scoot McNairy is good as Henry, the leader of the gang who will protect himself at all costs but it’s Robert Pattinson, who is almost unrecognizable, finally realising his potential with a superb performance as Henry’s brother, Rey. Hopefully he will be remembered for portrayals like this rather than that vampire bloke in Twilight franchise
Letterboxd (4 stars):
Tough, gritty and quietly powerful, this film not only delivers great Guy Pearce and surprising Robert Pattinson performances
Film School Rejects (B):
A critical retroactive sadness to Pearce’s steely determination. That flinty persona clashes well with Pattinson’s desperately thuggish demeanor, the hardened man tolerating the hapless boy.

It's a good thing what Rob feels about himself isn't fact because come ON....

I know one can argue that sexy, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder but whatever. Rob was blessed by God. King of Sexy and that's just that. Total Film seems to think kings belong in number 2 spots but that's ok. Rob is also a giver and he gave up the number 1 spot to a lesser being so they might feel better about life. ;)

Were you happy with how Cosmopolis was received?

No, I would've liked it to have made half a billion dollars at the box office! [laughs] The movie was received like an art film, which is to say it did OK in the big cities. Naturally you always want the biggest audience you can get, just as long as it doesn't cause you to compromise your moviemaking.

Why did you cast Robert Pattinson as limo-riding antihero Eric Packer?

Eric is in absolutely every scene, so you need an actor who is interesting and charismatic enough to look at for the entire movie. You want someone who can really come up with surprises and angles, and has a level of stardom that will support the movie. He also had to do a credible New York accent. All of that led me to Rob.(Kate: and we're so glad it did)

I think it has totally come across in the interviews and press conferences that we've seen for "Cosmopolis" what a nice guy David is.

Love this interview from Cannes. I like the home video quality too. LOL
IntellectualRob talks about Eric and the "misweave". I'm seriously praying David and Rob do a DVD commentary.
Plus, super cute Rob speaking italian at the end with his giggle and toothpick. I die.

David spoke to Total Film and the Rob mention is within the first 2 minutes but the whole interview is worth a listen.

UPDATE: Another David interview, this one from the Irish Times. An excerpt:
Not surprisingly, the marketing men are focusing much attention on their leading man. For some time, our own Colin Farrell was pencilled in to play the protagonist. Sadly, scheduling commitments on the upcoming remake of Total Recall ruled him out.

“What age is the character? Colin Farrell was 33 or 34. Are we going to go with that? We were thinking of him. At which point, we maybe would have had Marion Cotillard as his wife. But once we got Rob, it was clear she’s not the right wife. You don’t just cast one person; you cast the whole movie. Maybe, Colin was too old.”

So, why Robert Pattinson?

“Don’t you think he’s good?” he says.

I do actually.

“I knew he would be good, but I had to convince him he would be good. He is a serious enough cinephile that he doesn’t want to fuck the movie up. All actors have this insecurity that they’re going to be the bad actor in the piece. Even guys like Olivier worried that they were not good enough. It goes with acting. It’s up to me to say: ‘You can do that’.”

Great interview from David in TimeOut. No Rob mention in this part but I liked his answer :D
Does it frustrate you when critics accuse your recent films of being talky, as if your early work was somehow different?
‘It’s inevitably a little frustrating. You feel that they haven’t been paying attention. A casual filmgoer is forgiven, they’re allowed to be careless. You pay your money, you can pay as little attention as you want. But for a film journalist, it’s not very professional to drop that ball
This section, David talks about Eric Packer and Rob.
Is it fair to say that ‘Cosmopolis’ is more interested in mood and tone than in logic or narrative?
‘I’m glad to hear you say that! People who are used to Hollywood movies where everything is explained may be frustrated. There’s no way anybody can follow some of the things Samantha Morton’s character says, for instance. At least not the first time. I think of it like a sci-fi movie where the intergalactic pilot is explaining the way his spaceship works. You don’t need to know what he’s talking about, you just need to believe that he knows what he’s talking about. Eric Packer understands when his Chief of Theory is explaining how the future connects with capitalism. It excites him, and that’s all you need to know.'

What do you think about Eric Packer – and is it important to like your central character?
‘I think it’s important to feel empathy, not necessarily sympathy. You need to have some understanding of him, but it doesn’t mean you have to like him. You need to be fascinated enough to stay with him throughout the movie. Which is why you need a charismatic actor like Rob, who has a face you want to keep looking at.’

Does casting a star like Robert Pattinson have any significance for you, beyond the fact that he’s right for the role?
‘No. It’s similar to when I cast Viggo [Mortensen, in ‘Eastern Promises’]. It’s important for the financing. If Rob hadn’t been famous from “Twilight”, I couldn’t have had him in the movie. But for me creatively that means nothing. Once you’re on the set, it’s just you guys. There’s no-one else there. It’s as if he never made another movie and I never made another movie.’

Do you like the idea that Twi-hards might have their horizons widened by ‘Cosmopolis’?
‘I do. A lot of girls who are fans of Rob’s have created “Cosmopolis” websites, and some of them are really elaborate and beautiful. And they’re reading the book and talking about it. They know it isn’t “Twilight” and they’re still excited. We had some girls standing outside at 3am while we were shooting. They’d made a T-shirt that said “Nancy Babich” and had a pistol on it [a reference to Pattinson’s bodyguard]. So I happily wore that for them! Undoubtedly there will be some Rob fans who’ve never heard of Don DeLillo, or me, who will see this movie. It’s not the cake, but it’s the icing on it.’

I love that David keeps bringing up how Rob's fans are supporting Cosmopolis and interested in Cosmopolis. :) There's also a Rob interview on Flicks & Bits HERE but there's nothing new. It sounds like it was pieced together from the presscons and junkets videos we've seen.

Robert Pattinson will soon be bidding farewell to the Twiverse, with Breaking Dawn – Part Two hitting cinemas in November. He’s not wasting any time moving on, though, as Cosmopolis blasts into cineplexes this month.

Directed by David Cronenberg and adapted from Don DeLillo’s novel, Cosmopolis is a blackly comic drama in which 28-year-old billionaire Eric (Pattinson) gets caught up in a whirlwind of chaotic activity as he attempts to get across Manhattan.

We gave Pattinson a ring to ask him a few quick questions about the film...

How’s it going?

"Good. Although I don’t why we’re doing this [interview] at 9 o’clock at night on a Friday in London. It just shows how much of a loser I am! It’s the one time I’m free…"

Cosmopolis seems like a game-changer performance for you…

"I felt, doing this film, how I felt doing films before the first Twilight. Where I didn’t have to worry about anyone’s reaction… and now I’m incredibly worried about everybody’s reaction! I’m absolutely terrified!"

It’s a film open to interpretation. What do you think it’s about?

"I definitely didn’t think it was a Wall Street movie and that was what I was most afraid of. Because Eric’s wearing a suit and seems apathetic I thought people would write it off as American Psycho. I never read it as that but the tone has similarities. What I thought is that it’s about Eric trying to find some kind of alternative reality. It’s really sad.

"I read a thing that described is as a guy who’s trying to throw everything away in one day – he’s not trying to throw anything away, he’s trying to find something else. If the guy was totally nihilistic, it wouldn’t be sad. I did an interview with a French magazine the other day and the journalist was saying ‘this is a movie about the end of the world’ and was like,‘oh, YEAH. It IS.’

"David was saying at the wrap party, ‘Oh, it’s much funnier than anything I’ve done in ages’ and I completely forgot that I found the script funny because I was playing it totally seriously the whole time. It’s confusing! (Kate: That's the understatement of the year!) David said to me ‘I didn’t understand it at the beginning and I hope to not understand it at the end’.

"It’s that that thing that Fellini said – as soon as you understand it, it’s dead, it has no more interest. It’s this thing that’s swimming in nothingness and has no land or sky… and that’s the most pretension thing I think I’ve ever said in my entire life."

Did you base Eric on anyone?

"It’s just the words – there was such a specific voice from the very beginning. It’s just really well written. Most scripts are really shit and you’re just thinking ‘how can I make it better?’ but this one, all you had to do was just say it. A really shitty actor could just sit there and say it and make it sound really good." (Kate: No a really shitty actor could NOT just sit there and make it sound good! Stop running yourself down Rob!)

There’s a lot of crazy scenes in this… what were your favourite and least favourite scenes to film?

"The prostate exam scene got cut down, the last line of that scene was [Eric saying] ‘I wanna bottle-fuck you slowly with my sunglasses on.’ I remember reading that scene [when reading the script], with a doctor’s finger up your arse – and having absolutely no idea how to say that. Or even if I could get on set and have a camera in my face and say that. But that fear is what made me want to do it."

Do you think this will take you to a different audience?

"When you get some kind of success quite quickly you have to pay for it somehow, pay your dues and stuff. I want to support the whole part of the industry that I like and got me interested in film. With the limited amount of power I have I would love to use it to get indies which never would be made or seen, hopefully seen. And also I just want seem cool!"

What do you think the Twilight fans will think of this?

"I think they’ll like it. I’m not particularly worried about that at all. The only thing they wouldn’t like is the same thing that anyone wouldn’t like – if it was shit. But I think it’s a good film. Some people will be like ‘whaaat?’ but no-one’s going to be offended by it. It’s quite a funny film, essentially."

What was it like working with Paul Giamatti?

"I shot a lot in the limo and all the other actors had to enter my world there. Then my scenes with Paul were huge scenes in a different environment and probably the most nerve-wracking scenes. We had 5 days to shoot 19 pages and we ended up shooting it in a day and half. Almost every take in it is the first take. And the scene where I shot myself in the hand was all one 4-minute take. It’s crazy."

Seems like you work relentlessly – do you ever take a break?

"I inadvertently took a really long break. I didn’t want to, but I haven’t worked for 10 months – I mean, not working on a film, I did other stuff, (Kate: And what "other stuff" would that be now?) I didn’t just sit there – but I’ll probably work for five years now. I really want to do something soon."

Cosmopolis opens 15 June 2012.

And love she does. If becoming this Parisian socialite sounds like Ricci's SoHo pipe dream come true, it's not the only fantasy on offer. There was also Pattinson. Locking lips and limbs with the Twilight star in a series of boudoir scenes, Ricci gets more R-Pattz ass than Bella Swan ever has. So come on, Christina, kiss and tell... "Everyone keeps asking me how it is to kiss Robert," she says. "He's a good kisser. And I'm not being nice. It's just like that."

She may be six years his senior - he was just four when Ricci made her film debut as swimming-obsessed moppet opposite Cher in 1990's Mermaids - but Ricci insists that she and Pattinson got on famously. "He's always the kind of guy that you can look at and go, 'Oh God, This is uncomfortable!' And he's really lovely to work with, especially in those kinds of scenes, because he's so quick to laugh at himself - and me! He's very self deprecating, as am I."
