You and Robert Pattinson have developed an interesting creative partnership. You’re a bit of an odd couple.
We are. Well, first of all, I think he’s a really good actor, and I think he was an underrated actor because of the stiffness and silliness of Twilight and those characters in it. But seeing other work that he had done and seeing that he was a serious actor and looking for challenges, and wasn’t trying to “manage his image” as a star, was attractive to me. And, of course, being such a big celebrity is helpful because it will help your film get financed, but the charisma that made him work so well as Edward Cullen is something you want in a movie like Cosmopolis where he’s in every scene in the movie. You need someone who’s infinitely watchable. But once you’re on the set, he’s just a sweetheart. Totally professional, really accessible, and funny. And a terrific actor. (Tink: MY HEART. Things we know but I NEVER tire of reading or hearing them.)
So I take it you’re not a fan of the Twilight movies.
Well, no, of course not. Look, the series is a huge hit, of course, but it’s young adult fiction and I’m not a young adult. If people are mesmerized by it you can’t argue with it. Not a lot of movies and series have that kind of following. I don’t fault it for that.
Right. Twilight also had a strange chastity/sex is evil message.
Yeah. And you can be sure that Rob was aware of all those things. He’s very well-read, and very well-versed in cinema—which I’m not sure his fans know. (Tink: Ah ah ah. We are veeeeery aware of this side of Rob. Maybe Edward only fans don't know what's up but Rob fans do.) He was very hyper-aware of all those things surrounding those movies.
Your film does have a fun sex scene between Julianne Moore and Robert Pattinson in a limo.
That was fun to shoot! (Tink: And fun to watch!) It requires some athleticism to have sex in a limo for all concerned—including the cameraman—but obviously this isn’t the first time I’ve done a sex scene in a limo, since we did a bit of it in Cosmopolis. In this case it was a real limo, but in Cosmopolis it was a limo-set.
Well Robert seems to have the limo sex thing down, now.
[Laughs] I’ve never asked him how many times he’s had sex in a limo for real. It’s not really my place to ask such a thing. It really just requires the characters to be good actors. Obviously, the sex had a very different tone in this movie because he’s not the star—she’s the star in this movie. He’s just servicing her, and he knows that he’s doing it for his career—he thinks. Whereas in Cosmopolis, he’s the emperor of his limo. (Tink: Master of the universe.)
That was the great thing about this sex scene—it’s a young stud servicing a woman. There aren’t many sex scenes in cinema that feature a woman running the show.
It’s a lovely part of Bruce’s script—that he’s constantly keeping you guessing.

Brimstone is a suspenseful tale of guilt and retribution that unfolds in America at the end of the 19th century.
A dark, violent and epic western/thriller about a young woman (and her family) whose lives change drastically when a new preacher comes to town. The story, told in four chapters, shows us how the young woman has to fight for her life and those of her loved ones, but also portrays the horrible past that led up to these events.
BERLIN — Robert Pattinson and Carice van Houten (“Game of Thrones”) have joined Mia Wasikowska and Guy Pearce in thriller “Brimstone.” Embankment is selling at the European Film Market in Berlin.

“Martin directs a highly emotional, gripping and unique story of a mesmerizing woman who battles the vengeance of a zealot,” said Embankment’s Tim Haslam.

The Weekly Review chatted to Guy Pearce recently where he spoke about his music and writing songs while on set. Of course Rob came into the conversation.
I have visions of these two during The Rover filming sitting around a campfire in the outback with their guitars singing and writing songs. Oh to be a fly on a guitar.
Thanks Nancy for the heads up!

'Pearce found film shoots the perfect place to write songs: “No dogs to walk, no family to visit”. But it was always done somewhat in secret. Which begs the question; who else is in this secret songwriter society? Who is the best actor slash songwriter too self-conscious to “come out”? “Rob Pattinson,” Pearce says, naming the Twilight megastar he recently acted alongside in The Rover. If you want to read the full interview with Guy head over HERE.

New interviews and quotes
From 2Day (sampling from the presscon):
Hollywood hunk Robert Pattinson has faced the media in Sydney, to speak about his new film, The Rover. From News.com.au (Rob mentions cool Queen of the Desert stuff towards the end and breaks my heart in the beginning...Rob, why oh why am I more confident about your abilities than you?):
Our reporter Alex Bryant attended the conference and spoke to Rob. Al "On working on Australian films, this is for you Rob.... the Australian industry has a reputation for being among the hardest working in the world, how was your experience with it?"Rob: "I think it was a really special crew, it was quite harsh where we were but, also just having everyone on location as well and kind of no-one to my knowledge really fell out with each other, (laughs) yes it was amazing."
Rob:"I was trying to get into Australian movies for a long time before I did this, I'm not sure why ... I think it's a confident and vibrant film industry.. and vital. I had a really great experience."
The Rover makes its Aussie debut at the Sydney Film Festival before hitting cinemas next week.
DON’T expect to see a newly-buff Robert Pattinson in a superhero movie any time soon.
“It’s not really about the physicality,’’ said the former Twilight heart-throb today ahead of the red carpet premiere of dystopian Outback thriller The Rover at the Sydney Film Festival on Saturday night.
“Those leading guy roles are all extremely confident characters and I am just not confident. I would feel weird faking that confidence.
“The action guy who does the little quip at the end of killing somebody? I would sound like a psycho.”
Pattinson said he and co-star Guy Pearce, with whose character he forms an uneasy alliance in The Rover, had compared notes.
“We’re not really considered for those normal leading man roles — well, maybe I was for a little period after Twilight. I guess I gravitate towards niche things but also those are the things I get offered.”
Pattinson, who spent a month on location in South Australia while filming David Michod’s hotly-anticipated follow-up to Animal Kingdom, says the closest he is ever likely to come to playing a classic leading man is his role as T.E. Lawrence in Werner Herzog’s Queen of the Desert, which stars Nicole Kidman.
“I was playing Lawrence of Arabia! They are huge shoes to fill,” he said.
“I think it was my most challenging role so far. It was certainly the scariest, even though I only had a few scenes.”The 28-year-old actor said Kidman was very different to how he expected she would be.
“I guess maybe I saw her as quite untouchable. I was only in Morocco for about 10 days, but she is really funny and super accessible — just hanging out with her kids.“She was really easy to work with. I really liked her.”
Reviews for Pattinson’s performance in The Rover, in which he plays a slow-witted Southern drifter to Pearce’s embittered avenger, have been universally positive – Variety went so far as to describe it as “career-redefining.”
The actor said the accolades generated by last month’s prestigious midnight screening at the Cannes Film Festival felt like a validation “for about five seconds.” But the next job was almost more important. “It’s almost like creating a brand,’’ he said. “You have to get enough good reviews so that people go in expecting a good movie – then half your job is done. “
In a press conference at the Sydney Theatre, attended by Pearce, Michod and producers Liz Watts and David Linde, Pattinson downplayed the physical discomfort of the seven weeks he spent on location in Hammond, Quorn, Copley and Leigh Creek in the middle of the Australian summer. “I am being prompted to say how awful it was. But I really liked it. I just found it incredibly serene being able to look to the horizon. I liked the harshness of the landscape as well. There’s something strangely mystical about it.
Pattinson, who was photographed coming out of an LA gym immediately prior to boarding the plane to Australia, puts his relatively recent conversion to treadmills down to age. From Daily Mail (quotes from press con and Rob and Guy are such a winning bromance):
“When you get to your late 20s, you start turning to fat. It’s crazy. You actually have to think about what you eat. It’s so annoying,” he said.
“I thought it would happen a bit later.”
Working in 50 degree temperatures in the Australian Outback didn't exactly make for easy filming conditions on the set of Robert Pattinson's new film The Rover, but the 28-year-old star got through it by drinking alcohol.MORE pics under the cut!
The British actor's fellow leading man in the Australian movie - Guy Pearce - has revealed that Pattinson 'handled himself really well' in the harsh environment, even with the booze.
'He drank more vodka than I advised him to drink,' said Pearce, 46.
A good-humoured Pattinson chuckled while sipping a cup of tea on stage in Sydney at a press conference talking about The Rover on Friday.
'This is going to be the only thing that comes out of this now,' said the former Twilight Saga star.
'My "drinking problem".'
Pearce was quick to cover his tracks, jumping in with the line: 'There was no vodka.'
Pattinson arrived in Australia on Thursday morning to promote the film from David Michod, with the Animal Kingdom director joining him on stage with producers Liz Watts and David Linde.
He said that he had been wanting to get into the Australian industry and knew The Rover was the role for him after the screenplay 'leapt off the page'.
'I was trying to get into the Australian movies for a long time before this,' said Pattinson.
'I think it's a really confident, vibrant industry - and vital.'
Set in rural Australian in a dystopian future, The Rover is having its Australian premiere at the Sydney Film Festival on Saturday night.
Pattinson has been receiving rave reviews for his performance out of the Cannes film festival, with critics calling it a career redefining turn.
The Cosmopolis actor said he has gotten a laugh out of reading the descriptions about his character Rey, who is American and speaks with a strong Southern twang.
'I've loved reading the reviews, saying that I've done a terrible Australian accent.'

David Cronenberg talked to The Hollywood Reporter and mentioned a conversation he had with Rob during Cosmopolis filming. The interview is a good read and I can't wait to see these two working the Cannes circuit together again.

David Cronenberg talked to The Hollywood Reporter and mentioned a conversation he had with Rob during Cosmopolis filming. The interview is a good read and I can't wait to see these two working the Cannes circuit together again.
Excerpt from The Hollywood Reporter:
You made Maps for a little more than $13 million. What is your approach to film financing?David mentions Cosmopolis later in the interview and talks about how he's very proud of the film.
Money can be neutral, and as long as the source of the money doesn’t involve giving up creative freedom, I don’t care where it comes from. In fact, I rather like that independent films are put together like Frankenstein: You get pieces from all over the world, and you stitch them together and hope it ends up being a living organism. That’s the financing. But creatively — obviously that’s one of the reasons you make independent films, for creative freedom. You don’t have studio interference. When I was making [2012’s] Cosmopolis, [Robert] Pattinson said to me, “I’ve never seen this before.” I said, “You’ve never seen what?” He said, “You just make all the decisions right here on the spot.” I said, “Yeah.” I mean, you don’t actually have to wait to get memos from the studio. He said he’d never been in a situation where the director did what he wanted, without consultation. I said: “You know, it’s just us making this movie. There’s no one else — there’s no Big Brother.”
Older directors often lose their creative edge as their careers progress. At 71, you don’t seem to have that problem. Why?
It’s a matter of creative force and edge. Cosmopolis, which was not a successful film in terms of box office, for me was a really successful film in terms of pushing the envelope of filmmaking. So I’m really very proud and happy with that film. That’s the thing: I’ve never lost sight of why I’m making films. You can lose sight of it. When you get older, for me, you can even get choosier. If a film isn’t really exciting, if it’s just ordinary, there’s no way I’ll do it. I don’t need the money. Not that I’m rich, but I have enough to live on, and I don’t need to do a movie for money — and I don’t need to do a movie just to be doing a movie. It has to be something that really pushes my buttons, and Maps to the Stars did that. It took 10 years to get it made. The same was true of A Dangerous Method, and Crash as well. The more difficult, interesting films take 10 years to get made. Eventually I’m going to run out of time, but it takes a project like that to get me interested. So I’m not likely to make a boring film.
David Cronenberg making a boring film — that would generate some scandal. That would be the bad kind of scandal, absolutely.Click HERE to read the full interview

Do we love Robenberg or do we LOVE Robenberg?? I can't even start talking about how awesome it was that David saw Rob's performances in Little Ashes, Remember Me and Twilight and that made him know Rob was the man to bring Eric Packer to life (and beyond). Such a great relationship was formed during the filming that he knew he wanted to work with Rob again on his next project. We're lucky enough to see that moving full steam ahead with production on Maps To The Stars starting in July!

UPDATE: Since this was a mini Cosmopolis cluster of news, I'm adding new footage of Rob inside the theater of his Cosmopolis premiere at Cannes and David mentioning Rob in a new interview. Videos at the bottom.
A new promotional still from Cosmopolis features Rob on the cover of Day & Night magazine!
This is the audio of Rob and David's interview with Richard Crouse. Rob is great. I love him in this setting. It sounds like the interview took place on June 5th, the day after the press conference. He's very thoughtful with his answers and it's over 10 min long. There is a spoiler around the 8:50-9:10 area. Skip that and Rob picks back up talking after 9:30 when the question finished.
Highlights:
Quick glimpse of Rob in the theater at Cannes. You can also see Kristen and Tom.
Thank you Sky for the heads up! xx

Highlights:
- Rob talking about journalists asking if his roles reflect his real self and not relating to that question
- Rob talks about people's fascination with fame
- Rob says he thinks the limos aren't that present in NYC anymore
- Rob likes the poetry of the script and says a great anecdote about his friend who wrote a script. This led to him saying how much he loves the language of Cosmopolis. "Whenever I see clips of it, I want to say the lines again." This really hit me because after seeing the film, I haven't been able to stop saying the lines the way these characters spoke them.

This audio interview on CBC Radio was great. The interviewer started to grate on my nerves but David, of course, made sure Rob was respected. He loves him so. :')
I worked on a semi-transcript (not entirely verbatim) for CosmopolisFilm because the video can't be embedded on that blog but I'll include it here in case some of you aren't able to listen to the audio right now. The interview is on autorun so it's after the cut.
Interview and summary after the cut!
