The vampire is dead. Or at least by now he should be. With The Rover, the new film from Animal Kingdom director David Michod, Robert Pattinson has finally shaken off the Twilight tag that threatened to define him forever as an actor.

In The Rover, he has an accent from America's deep south, bad teeth and a strange emotional dependency on others. It’s a role that has attracted some very positive reviews: Variety critic Scott Foundas talked about ‘‘a career-redefining performance ... that reveals untold depths of sensitivity and feeling’’.

Pattinson is a relaxed interview subject. He has a hearty laugh, and the air of someone who hasn’t worked out all his lines in advance, but he’s also ready to explain and explore what interests him. He’s serious about his work, and keen to make movies with people he admires and respects.

He’s aware that he’s getting favourable reviews for The Rover. He’s happy about this, of course, he says, ‘‘because I really love the movie’’. But when it comes to his performance, he admits, ‘‘I always think of it as a work in progress, and it just gets frustrating, thinking about things you could fix.’’

At the same time, when he read the script, it was one of those rare occasions when he connected immediately with a role.‘‘Maybe because it was so loose - you could really do almost anything with the character. You could project anything onto it. But I don’t know, I could hear the voice in my head almost immediately, I could feel a walk ... and that’s only happened to me three or four times since I’ve started acting.’’


Michod plunges the audience swiftly into the world of the film, a near-future in which Australia has become a run-down, devastated, hand-to-mouth economy. There’s an almost documentary-like immediacy, as there’s virtually no explanation of how this collapse has happened. Early on, Pattinson’s character, Rey, is taken in hand by Pearce’s character, for reasons that gradually become clear. Yet there are many things about Rey that don’t get spelled out or remain ambiguous: this is another aspect of the film Pattinson appreciates.

He spent almost no time with Pearce before shooting started. ‘‘I guess because I’d auditioned a year before, and talked to David a lot. I already basically made my mind up how I wanted to play the character. I had to keep my mouth shut, figuring out what he wanted to do, it was kind of scary.’’ He wondered what would happen if Pearce’s interpretation was totally at odds with his vision of his own character. ‘‘It’s worked out great now,’’ but there were a couple of moments at the beginning, he says, when it felt as if they were in completely different films.

American actor Scoot McNairy plays Rey’s brother, from whom he has become separated. Pattinson’s a big fan of the chameleon-like actor whose recent films include Killing Them Softly, Monsters and 12 Years a Slave. ‘‘The funny thing about Scoot is you can never recognise him,’’ Pattinson says. "I was talking to him about Argo the other day, and I didn’t realise he was in it. Absolutely no idea.’’ He gives one of his heartiest laughs. ‘‘Our whole conversation, he thought I was joking.’’

He doesn’t mind telling stories against himself, and has a self-deprecating way of talking about certainties. ‘‘I don’t know if I’m necessarily any good at ‘sculpting a career’ or anything,’’ he says, ‘‘but I know what I want to do. I’m not very good at finding or getting massive movies.’’ It turns out that he’s talking about life after Twilight. What he means, he says, is that ‘‘I don’t get approached very much about superheroes and stuff.’’

He has, however, plenty of interesting projects under way or awaiting release. The Rover premiered at Cannes, and so did Maps to the Stars, a dark comedy about Hollywood directed by David Cronenberg. He’s also made Queen of the Desert, a biopic with Werner Herzog, about British traveller, writer and political figure Gertrude Bell (Nicole Kidman). He’s playing her ally T.E. Lawrence - inevitably inviting comparisons with Peter O’Toole.

He’s recently been working on Life, an intriguing double portrait of James Dean and Dennis Stock, the Life photographer who took a famous series of portraits of the actor just before he broke through as a star in East of Eden. Pattinson plays Stock, and people assume he was attracted to the part because it is a reflection on celebrity, but he says that’s not the case. ‘‘A lot of what I was interested in was nothing to do with James Dean, or fame, or anything like that.’’ What drew him to Stock, he says, is that the character is depicted as ‘‘a really bad dad. And you don’t really see that in young guy parts. He just doesn’t love his kid, or is incapable of it, and it kind of pains him.’’

The film is also about conflicting visions of creativity, he says. ‘‘It’s a little ego battle, and a lot of it is about professional jealousy, and who’s a better artist, who’s the subject and who’s the artist.’’ Life is directed by Anton Corbijn (Control) who was a photographer before he turned to movie making.

Pattinson says his own opinions on photography are ‘‘kind of weird’’. He’s not a fan of digital image-making, he says: he feels it’s too easy, that it doesn’t require the same level of artistry as analogue photography. And, of course, he adds, experiences with paparazzi haven’t helped him appreciate photographers. ‘‘I have a very negative attitude towards photographers in a lot of ways, so it’s interesting to play one.’’

In October, he starts work on Idol’s Eye, to be directed by French filmmaker Olivier Assayas, making his Hollywood debut. Robert De Niro has just signed on. ‘‘I’m really, really excited about this one,’’ Pattinson says. It’s a true story about a group of thieves at moments of transition - from the changing face of technology in burglar alarms to the shifting realities for the Chicago Mafia.

He’s also starring in an independent post-World War I drama called The Childhood of a Leader due to shoot in September. It will be directed by actor Brady Corbet (Mysterious Skin, Funny Games), from a script he has co-written. ‘‘I’ve known Brady for 10 years, he’s great and the script is phenomenal.’’

Corbet has said he really appreciates the way Pattinson uses his celebrity to help ensure that films he admires get made. Pattinson laughs when I mention this. It’s a power he might as well use while he can, he suggests. ‘‘We’ll see how long it lasts.’’

Every filmmaker dreams of getting a film into Cannes. Why do you think The Rover did?
Hopefully, it feels like a film they haven't seen before – it's tense and unusual – and because the central performances from Guy and Rob are really extraordinary.
You have said that the film is "not a post-apocalyptic film”, that “this is an Australia that has broken down into a kind of resource-rich Third World country." Can you expand on that?
I didn't want the world of the movie to feel like we'd been reduced to psychotic apes because of a single cataclysmic event. Rather, I wanted it to feel like the entirely plausible and frighteningly possible result of the world we live in today: economic and environmental collapse, as a product of rampant greed and exploitation, reduce Australia to a dangerous resource-rich third world country. Infrastructure, products, and an economy of sorts still exist – they're just broken, fragile and the world of the movie as a consequence is dangerous and unpredictable.
For the many people who know and love Animal Kingdom, what would you say to them about how the film is most different from or influenced by or still shows the David Michôd touch.
I think it will feel like it was made by the same guy who made Animal Kingdom. The Rover is much leaner in narrative and more epic in landscape but, like Animal Kingdom, it's still about the sadness and menace of people trying to make sense of a world that doesn't make any sense.

AT 23, Robert Pattinson's chosen career is simmering along quite nicely, thank you, with the handsome London actor pulling in an estimated $20 million, give or take a few bucks, last year.

Having kicked into high gear playing Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) before the hugely successful Twilight series, “R-Patz” (or sometimes even “Spunk Ransom”), as he is known, is the cause of instant hysteria among young women around the world and much innuendo in the gossip pages.

But he is in a relationship with his beautiful Twilight co-star, 19-year-old Kristen Stewart, and both are so in demand that you wouldn’t think they would have time to read anything salacious about themselves.

They don’t, but Pattinson gets reminded of it constantly, nevertheless.

“I still get my mum (Clare) calling me up every single day and questioning me about the gossip stuff,” he says with a slight shake of his head and a smile.

“I don’t like people I know reading that stuff about me because it kind of distorts everything. You’re inevitably going to find something bad eventually and I don’t want to be having to do PR to my family.”

Other than that, Pattinson’s sudden surge of fame through his vampire character, Edward Cullen, in the Twilight movie franchise has not overwhelmed him.

“My family has dealt with it really well,” he says. “I mean, they’re pretty untouched by it. My sisters (Victoria and chart-topping singer-songwriter Lizzy) are fine. They occasionally get their Facebook (pages) hacked into and stuff, but that’s the only downside.

“I’ve just been working in England and it’s the polar opposite to working in America. There’s no-one around the set and it is wholly different working there, so I’ve been getting to know what a normal life is like again.

“People are very different about it in London. If they do recognise me they’re embarrassed to say something and you can go into so many areas where people have no idea who you are.

“In London the other night I went out to have dinner in some pub somewhere and the barmaid had this whole conversation saying, ‘You look just like that guy from Twilight’. I was astonished because every time she came up she was like, ‘You literally could be his brother’ and she never put two and two together.”

But while Pattinson relishes his relative anonymity in England - in the US and elsewhere he inevitably draws a crowd - he sometimes struggles with whether or not he should just sweep fame up in his arms and embrace it.

“I’m wondering whether I’m holding on to something I should be letting go of by not changing anything,” he says.

“But, you know, I don’t particularly feel any different and I think because I’ve gone from job to job to job it means you stay in this sort of netherworld, so I feel relatively untouched.

“It’s kind of like accepting that you’re famous or just staying blind to it. I’m sort of wondering whether that’s the right way to go about things and whether it stops you growing as a person if you do that, but I don’t really know yet.”

He had one brief lesson in handling fame from Pierce Brosnan, who plays his father in the new film Remember Me, when the two went out to dinner together in New York.

“Some people were looking over,” Pattinson says. “They didn’t know who I was but they knew him, obviously. He went up to them and introduced himself and asked how their evening was going.

“At the time I was thinking like, 'What are you doing?’ but it worked fantastically because no-one treated him like he was a sideshow attraction any more and I’m sure those people went home and said what a nice guy he was.

“I don’t really have the confidence to do that yet, but it works better than my method, which is just hiding under the table or leaving immediately if anyone looks around.”

Pattinson’s box office appeal has reached such a high point now that he is a producer on Remember Me, with input to deliberations on matters such as casting with fellow producer Nick Osborne and director Alan Coulter, who is mainly known for TV (The Sopranos, Sex and the City) but also did the movie Hollywoodland (2006), starring Ben Affleck.

“But I’m such a novice at all this,” Pattinson says. “At the end of the day it’s the director’s decision about casting.”

Apart from Brosnan, the movie stars Academy Award winner Chris Cooper (Adaptation, 2002), Oscar nominee Lena Olin (Enemies: A Love Story, 1989) and Australian Emilie de Raven, one of the stars of the TV series Lost.

“I read with a bunch of girls and I watched all the tapes - which is unheard of, normally, for an actor to watch the audition tapes - and that was interesting and a kind of incredible thing to be allowed to do,” Pattinson says.

“Emilie was the best out of all of them and Alan thought she was way, way best before I had even met her, so that was lucky.

“She was great to work with. She is not ‘actressy’ at all, totally unpretentious, and she’s got a lot of spunk and fire in her.”

Set in New York, Remember Me stars Pattinson as Tyler, a rebellious young man who, since the suicide of his older brother, has had a troubled relationship with his father.

Soon after taking a beating at the hands of a police officer (Cooper), Tyler meets college student Ally (de Ravin), who he later discovers is the police officer’s daughter.

Tyler and Ally, however, become soul-mates and are happy, but then their relationship is suddenly threatened.

“As soon as I read the script I just sort of related to it in a fundamental way, right from the beginning,” Pattinson says.

“I don’t know why. But I just felt very connected to it the first time I read it and as all the rewrites happened and everything about it changed, I still always felt like everything about it was very true.

“It seemed like it was written for a reason.”

Maybe just to make Robert Pattinson even more famous.
