'The Lighthouse' had it first screening at Cannes this morning and it looks like everyone who saw it was blown away!
The initial reactions from the screening are amazing. We've done a little roundup of the reactions from twitter below and if you missed the livestream of the Q&A check that out HERE
Big ovation for Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe and Robert Eggers following “The Lighthouse” screening #cannes2019 pic.twitter.com/jsj1mCYJf2— Stuart Oldham (@s_oldham) May 19, 2019
Robert Eggers’s gripping nightmare The Lighthouse is the best thing in #Cannes2019 with sledgehammer performances from Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, like Steptoe and Son in hell #Cannes72 #Cannes— Peter Bradshaw (@PeterBradshaw1) May 19, 2019
Avast! The Lighthouse has left me woozy with shaking sea legs. A swirling descent into madness, with two mezmirizing performances from Pattinson and Dafoe. By far the best film to screen at Cannes so far.— Joseph D A Walsh (@JosephDAWalsh) May 19, 2019
2. THE LIGHTHOUSE is incredible. More than a worthy follow up to The Witch. Atmospheric, amazing dialogue and so much fun. Pattinson gives a Nicholson in The Shining level horror performance. Defoe is as great as ever. Wow. #Cannes2019— Conal Logan (@clogan38) May 19, 2019
The Lighthouse - Two men on a rock in the ocean slowly go mad. Absolutely phenomenal, visceral, intense, hilarious filmmaking. Every shot is masterful. Score is astounding. Willem Dafoe & Robert Pattinson are incredible, plumbing the depths of insanity. Perfection. #Cannes2019— Alex Billington @ Cannes (@firstshowing) May 19, 2019

MORE AFTER THE CUT
“The Lighthouse” is a gravelly, poetic two-hander that borrows from Herman Melville and The Shining. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson are outstanding #Cannes2019— Stuart Oldham (@s_oldham) May 19, 2019
THE LIGHTHOUSE - this is how you improve on a great first feature film. Impeccable cinematography, classical screen ratio, two actors giving their very very best & story of madness that chills to the bone. I bloody loved it! #RobertPattinson #WillemDafoe #RobertEggers #Cannes2019 pic.twitter.com/NvxEs16Kxl— Radek Folta (@rdfolta) May 19, 2019
Rob Pattinson & Willem Dafoe go toe to toe in Robert Eggers’ Melville-inspired 35 mm Academy ratio b/w period psychological thriller The Lighthouse. Shot in stormy weather in Nova Scotia, the quinzaine entry should yield another arthouse hit for @A24. pic.twitter.com/jGg83YT9Ia— Anne Thompson (@akstanwyck) May 19, 2019
THE LIGHTHOUSE by Robert Eggers. Almost at Guy Maddin level. Pattinson and Dafoe magnificent.#Cannes2019— Simon Popek (@SimonLiffe) May 19, 2019
The Witch was no fluke. Robert Eggers’ sophomore film, The Lighthouse, is a stunning blend myths and madness. Best film of #cannes2019 so far. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe give ferociously gripping performances— Total Film (@totalfilm) May 19, 2019
Robert Eggers The Lighthouse is a two-fer character study featuring fantastic performances by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. Might be Pattinson’s best. #Cannes2019— Gregory Ellwood - Cannes - Playlist 🎬 (@TheGregoryE) May 19, 2019
Still recovering from #TheLighthouse. What a cinema experience that was! #WillemDafoe on glorious form and #RobertPattinson in a career-best performance. I feel dirty, but wow!— THN (@thncom) May 19, 2019
Holy! Monkey pump! Hell! And you thought The Witch was good, ye ain't seen nuthin' yet. The Lighthouse is on a whole other level. Extraordinary!! Might just be Robert Pattinson's best performance yet. #Cannes2019— Alex Billington @ Cannes (@firstshowing) May 19, 2019
Pattinson and Dafoe give career best performances in the insanely, wonderfully crafted THE LIGHTHOUSE. A madhouse amidst a wild ocean; an old Irish poem of desire & greed. My heart still racing like crazy. Soundscape, cinematography, editing, production, all ace. Wow. #Cannes2019— Niels @ Cannes ✨ (@NielsPutman) May 19, 2019
Willem Dafoe makes his Green Goblin performance feel demure in comparison, but omg Robert Pattinson gamely goes all out trying to outdo him and is excellent, showing us yet another new facet of his talent we hadn’t seen yet! What an incredible actor #Cannes2019 #TheLighthouse— FilmLand Empire de la ComĂ©die-Française (@FilmLandEmpire) May 19, 2019
I loved THE WITCH but THE LIGHTHOUSE is another level. The image-making is relentlessly striking, Pattinson & Dafoe are extraordinary. Eggers seems to believe that to make a period film, you must also resurrect the dreams, nightmares, language and, um, sea shanties of the time— Jake Coyle (@jakecoyleAP) May 19, 2019
Full review of The Lighthouse later, but Willem Dafoe is channeling Captain Birdseye and Robert Pattinson delivers a monologue about how Dafoe smells of foreskin, so of course I loved it— Alistair Ryder @ Cannes (@YesitsAlistair) May 19, 2019
Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse surpasses The Witch. An astonishing descent into madness... or ascent into the light. Eggers and his two-man cast - Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe - now discussing it on stage #cannes2019 pic.twitter.com/oqqqiI5CBr— Jamie Graham (@jamie_graham9) May 19, 2019
What a brilliant full bloodied visceral intense salty dog yarn of a film The Lighthouse is . And an acting tour-de-force from Robert Pattison and Willem Dafoe - here with director Robert Eggers #Cannes2019 pic.twitter.com/velpLvGaom— Mark Cosgrove (@msc45) May 19, 2019
Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse is like if Melville or Poe reimagined The Shining as an odd couple comedy where both protagonists are Jack Torrance. A lot to take in, but Pattinson and Dafoe are superb. #Cannes2019— Adam Woodward (@AWLies) May 19, 2019
Lighthouse is full throttle sea dogs and shocks, loved it! #Cannes2019 also Pattison, Defoe and director Robert Eggers are here for the premiere. pic.twitter.com/rafvoVncHJ— Joan Parsons (@joan_parsons) May 19, 2019
Avast me hearties! Stap me vittles if Robert Eggers’ brine-soaked chiller THE LIGHTHOUSE isn’t the most inspired piece of out n out cinema in this fest. More anon, ye scurvy dogs. #Cannes2019 #Quinzaine2019— Jonathan Romney (@JonathanRomney) May 19, 2019
The Lighthouse is a very worthy follow-up to The Witch. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe go mad off the mainland. Immense performances, another astonishing period-dialogue-driven script and gorgeous monochrome, full-frame photography. Oppressively nightmarish #Cannes2019— Jordan Farley (@JordanFarley) May 19, 2019
#Cannee2019— Alejandro G.Calvo (@AlejandroGCalvo) May 19, 2019
Every frame of THE LIGHTHOUSE is stunning, every flinch of this wonderfully weird horror is insane in the best way. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe are completely unparalleled, how exciting it is to be living at the same time as such talent! #Cannes2019— Ella Kemp (@efekemp) May 19, 2019
THE LIGHTHOUSE: Robert Eggers is completely fearless, and this consummately deranged, clanging, pungent beast of a film, shot in striking black and white, is a riot of overblown lingo and stark, slick imagery. Pattinson and Dafoe are able and game. Loved this. #Cannes2029— Caspar Salmon (@CasparSalmon) May 19, 2019
THE LIGHTHOUSE: Robert Eggers' superbly lensed tug of war between a scenery chewing Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson descending into madness is deleriously bonkers, AND it will expand your vocabulary. Phenomenonal, what a rush #Cannes2019— Marc v.d. Klashorst (@MarcVDKlashorst) May 19, 2019
Anybody who recalls when I was the film reviewer on the @breakfasters may remember I had an obsession with Robert Pattinson. I’m now about 20 metres from him.— Thomas Caldwell (@cinemaautopsy) May 19, 2019
And he’s with Willem Dafoe & filmmaker Robert Eggers discussing the brilliant THE LIGHTHOUSE. I’m in heaven. #Cannes2019 pic.twitter.com/bWuj5swDQ2
I liked The Witch but this one is absolutely outstanding. Performance, script, direction, aesthetic - it’s really, really good— Hannah Woodhead (@goodjobliz) May 19, 2019
I love the way he constantly surprises us too, I can’t think of a more fascinating actor at the moment!— FilmLand Empire de la ComĂ©die-Française (@FilmLandEmpire) May 19, 2019
Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse is an uproarious, hallucinatory dark-&-stormy night yarn. Joyously rolling with the cliches & performed with drunken abandon by Pattinson & Dafoe. Just fabulous, this #Cannes2019— Xan Brooks (@XanBrooks) May 19, 2019
It’s embarrassing The Lighthouse wasn’t selected for competition. Pattinson missed out on an acting prize. #Cannes2019— Gregory Ellwood - Cannes - Playlist 🎬 (@TheGregoryE) May 19, 2019
I don’t want to marry a Lighthouse keeper. The Lighthouse is an inspired piece of gothic salty dog brine drenched genius. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe are fantastic. #CannesFilmFestival pic.twitter.com/0qGIPEqFav— John Bleasdale (@drjonty) May 19, 2019
Midsommar, It: Chapter 2, Doctor Sleep, The Lodge y'all better watch out. Reactions for The Lighthouse coming fresh out of #Cannes2019 are praising the film as a tour de force of acting from Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, with masterful genre-bending mischief. Can't wait. pic.twitter.com/XbmyjfTjuZ— meez (@lonny_aster) May 19, 2019
I never thought this day would come, but after watching The Lighthouse, Adam Driver has been toppled from the no.1 position in my mancrush Top Ten and now it’s Robert Pattinson - this is like when John McEnroe beat Bjorn Borg at Wimbledon in 1981 Wimbledon men’s final #Cannes— Peter Bradshaw (@PeterBradshaw1) May 19, 2019
