That is the kind of preposterous sentence that a critic sometimes finds herself writing from the Cannes Film Festival, where Mr. Pattison’s new movie, “Good Time,” is in competition. The next morning, the movie shook up a largely listless event that has been stuffed with near-misses and entries that tend to preach at viewers or punish them, often both. “Good Time,” by contrast, is pure cinematic pleasure about an often funny, sometimes shocking rush into the abyss, one that earned Mr. Pattinson a lot of critical love here if no awards.
Mr. Pattinson plays Constantine Nikas, a.k.a. Connie, a calamitously inept bad guy who, during one terrible New York adventure, leaves ruin and broken bodies in his wake. Directed by the brothers Josh and Benny Safdie, “Good Time” is thrillingly energetic and focused. It doesn’t peddle a message or redemption, but instead tethers you to an oblivious narcissist who pushes the story into an ever-deepening downward spiral. As errors turn into catastrophes, Connie grows increasingly feral, becoming a character who is a biliously funny reproach to the American triumphalism that suffuses superhero flicks and indies alike and insists that success isn’t just inevitable but also a birthright.
“Good Time” is part of a fascinating course correction undertaken by Mr. Pattinson, who in recent years has appeared and almost disappeared in art cinema titles like “The Childhood of a Leader” and “The Lost City of Z.” Although he brushed against blockbuster fame playing a doomed character in the “Harry Potter” franchise, he became a global name in the role of Edward Cullen, the pallid vampire heartthrob in the “Twilight” series. That celebrity turned frenzied when Mr. Pattinson and his co-star Kristen Stewart began a long on-and-off relationship that quickly turned into fodder for the publicity grinder and was almost inevitably folded into the “Twilight” brand and saga.
During his “Twilight” years, Mr. Pattinson was not always treated kindly by critics who did not necessarily see beyond his beauty or his utility as one of that series’ cinematic objects of desire. Unlike Ms. Stewart, he also did not have an earlier body of work that indicated he could do more than pout prettily, even if his turns in small movies like “Remember Me” (2010) showed promise. New roles for Robert Pattinson as he continues to work with his favourite directors
The Cannes press conference for Good Time gave us news of exciting new roles for Robert Pattinson (click here to listen again). Rob continues to seek out his favourite directors to work with. Not only do we have an update on when High Life is expected to film but news of three more upcoming projects! Click on the directors names to learn more about their previous films.
Claire Denis
Rob will play the lead role in the Science Fiction drama 'High Life' directed by Claire Denis. Claire Denis was in Cannes and supported Rob by walking the red carpet for Good Life. She gave a quick interview sharing that Rob's character will be "the hero, a very tender paternalistic film". The film is planned to start shooting in Autumn.
Johanna Hogg
We learned that Rob will play the lead role in an upcoming British production 'The Souvenir' that will be directed by Johanna Hogg. The movie is part of a pair of films with Rob playing the lead in one of the films in the role of an actor. (See our previous post for more details here)
David Michod
Rob announced that the press conference he would be re-teaming with David Michod. Rob fans got to know David from The Rover and it's so exciting that they will be working together again.

Robert Pattinson: What is certain is that it was one of my favorite experiences. It was such a crazy adventure. At the beginning, there wasn’t even a script and then, we find ourselves in competition in Cannes …
This is your fourth Festival. Do you feel at home?
R: I love coming here. For me, it is the pinnacle to present a film.
You have contacted the Safdie brothers after seeing a photo of their movie “Mad Love in New York” …
R: Yes. I found the image so beautiful and moving that I said, “I want to shoot with these people. And then I met them. They are so intelligent and good people. I told them I was ready to do whatever they wanted.
This is where the Safdie wrote this role for you. What do you have in common with your character?
R: His anxiety (laughs). And like Connie, before, in New York, I spent most of my time on the street trying to hide myself. Instinctively, I kept looking around to avoid the paparazzi.
This is no longer the case?
R: In London, where I live most of the time, people would rather see the reality show heroes and footballers. And in Los Angeles, where I am often, paparazzi make less money because magazines publish photos from Instagram, so it’s better.
You’ve totally changed the look for this character …
R: Yes. Usually, I look like a 22 year old kid. There, they made me false acne scars, I have darker hair … I finally look like an adult.
How was the shoot?
R: It was extremely bad for my health! I slept very little. The night work was almost always sixteen or seventeen hours in a row. We were in a bubble. It was very intense and stressful.
Since the end of "Twilight”, you choose independent films on a small budget. Why ?
R: When I choose a film, I don’t wonder if it will be a success or not. If it’s a low budget film, I say to myself: “I will do another after.” What I want is to surprise. However, commercial films are designed not to disturb the public. I find them boring to see and make.
You must soon shoot with the French director Claire Denis …
R: Yes, this summer normally. I had seen his movie "White Material” on television eight years ago and I found it an outstanding performance. I wanted to work with her. When I met her, she had a role for a guy who was 50 years old … But during the appointment, I felt her changing her mind.
Kristen Stewart (Ed: his former co-star in “Twilight” and ex) was in Cannes to present her short film. Did you meet her?
R: No.

R: Not really (laughs).
