ROBsessed's 30 Days for Rob's 30 Years: Robert Pattinson Is Awesome To Work With
Over the years there have been NUMEROUS posts here on Robsessed from people who have worked with Rob (from co-stars to directors & producers to photgraphers) all saying how awesome it has been working with him and just what an awesome guy he is in general.
When I went diving into the archives to put this compilation post together I got lost down the rabbit hole and loved looking back on all the wonderful things people had to say about him.
So take my advice and go make a cuppa and get comfortable before you start reading. You're going to be here for a while.
ENJOY!
Sarah Gadon
“I love what Rob (Pattinson) did in Cosmopolis…on the outside he’s
all ‘I don’t know what I’m doing’, but he’s very smart….I get along
really well with all my leading men.
"Um, what is Rob really good at? He's good at a lot of things! I think he was really great as Eric Packer. And I think that was one thing that kind of surprised me, because I
didn't really know him very well. And in real life he's very kind of... I
mean, you heard him in the press conference: he's British and he's
self-deprecating and he's much more self-conscious [than his character].
And
then all of a sudden he put on his suit, and this American accent would
come out, and he would be so sure of himself and so powerful! And direct! And it was amazing to me to see that transformation of
going from himself into Eric Packer. And I think that there's few, few
guys right now in the industry who can pull off that kind of powerful
masculinity at such a young age."
"He was refreshingly normal, and perhaps shockingly deeply concerned about the development of his career"
Julianne Moore
“[Co-star Robert Pattinson] is one of those people whose affect is so
dissimilar to who he is. He has this gorgeous face and he seems like
he’s going to be very remote and very serious. But he’s not. He’s
incredibly chatty, fun, and smart.”
“Robert’s looks belie who he is inside. He has this formidable, very
beautiful face. He’s such a gorgeous guy. He looks like he would be
remote, but the minute I met him, he was very chatty. He’s very funny.
He’s knowledgeable about film. He loves acting, actors and movies.
“Robert talked the entire time. I have to say I was shocked because I
didn’t expect it. I mean, he’s so friendly, truly delightful, smart and
talented. I loved him right away!”"
David Michôd
"I immediately liked him." "Not just affable but available guy, obviously intelligent."
" He’s quite beautiful, but strange and very open. When I knew that
The Rover was going to be the next movie and I started testing for it,
Rob was at the top of my list for people I wanted to see. He came in and
demonstrated to me immediately that he was a really interesting actor."
Around the 15:13 mark
“He has a really beguiling physical energy, clearly smart, and he was actively seeking out directors whose work he liked.”
"We met, I appreciated him a lot and then, he did some screen tests
for me, awesome tests, full of life, never forced or artificial and then
it was done. And there's something very exciting to have the
opportunity to show to the whole world that a star, who was
understimated and reduced to a certain image, has in fact a treasure of
unexploited talent. I quickly notice that Rob is a great actor. And I'm
looking forward to everyone seeing that."
“Rob is REMARKABLE”.
"Rob is a “really smart guy and he knows exactly what
he wants to do to build the career that he wants”. Rob was
“incredibly hardworking and a fun guy to work with, he’s a
really good actor”. Of course Rob thinks he’s a really bad actor, but
it wasn’t long before I realised that “that was Rob’s schtick”."
Guy Pearce
"Well, I mean, that performance that you see him deliver in The Rover
-- I detected that on the first or second day or whenever I went to set
and watched him work, I was like, "Wow this is going to be great." I
mean, Rob is a pretty quietly spoken guy. I think it is difficult for
him dealing with all of the publicity that he gets and all that sort of
stuff and so he just sort of wants to get out of the way and not get
hassled. You don't get too much of a sense of who he is and then he
starts performing and you just think, "Wow, this kid's incredible." And
you think about the popularity that he has and how amazing he looks, and
you couple that with that talent and you think, "Wow, this guy is going
to have just the most incredible career." He has an amazing career
already, but for him to now be able to just string together one more
interesting role after another I think will be fantastic.
He was great to work with."
''The best thing about Rob is that he is a really great actor,'' says Pearce. ''Watching the rushes back, you go: 'OK, he is just going to be fantastic'.''
"Seriously, if he doesn't become the biggest movie star in the world there's something wrong.' Amazing as an actor and amazing looking - what a combination."
"I hadn't seen a lot of Rob's work before, but obviously I'd seen actors like him, who found themselves horribly pigeonholed by major success and are desperate to break out. Rob achieves that on 'The Rover'. He's amazing, heartbreaking, like nothing he's done before. On day two I sidled up to David, 'So, Rob Pattinson, eh? He's pretty fucking fantastic, isn't he?'"
Evan Bird ~ co-starred in 'Maps to the Stars'
"A lot of actors my age, they're doing it either to become famous or
rich. It's not about that. It shouldn't be. When it is about that,
you're not going to be successful. Most people that are succesful
appreciate it for an artistic value. You need to enjoy it. You should
have no other reason to do it. Of course you make good money, and that's
because everyone loves movies. I mean look at Robert Pattinson. He's a
really down to earth guy, but he's a huge star."
Patricia McKenzie
"Rob was a sweetheart, very supportive and very professional."
"I didn't expect Rob to be so tall, and so charming. Everyone loved
him on set. He can carry his own in any conversation and takes pains
to make others feel at ease. He is very down-to-earth and low-key, the
kind of guy that just chills with his dog, or with a pint."
David Cronenberg
"I Knew He Was Good, But I Didn’t Know He Was Brilliant Until He Did The Movie (Cosmopolis)"
"He absolutely would say to you right now, 'I had no idea what I was doing at any time,' and he would mean it." I
think he really didn't realize how good he was. … He was surprising
himself, but he was surprising me by his accuracy. It was just dead on. I
mean, by the end of it we were doing one take. Honestly the whole last
scene, the whole last shot in the movie with him and Paul [Giamatti] --
one take. And it's a long take as well. And it's very emotional, and
very subtle. One take for both of them, it was so good. … In fact, we
finished the shoot five days early, and a lot of that was due to Rob."
"He’s terrific. He deserves the affection that the fans have for
him. He’s incredibly sweet, he’s very funny, he’s very bright and he’s
also very knowledgeable about cinema. Not just movies but the history of
cinema. He knows a lot about it. He’s just a sweetheart. And he’s
totally professional. He’s always right there. We had a lot of fun
shooting [the movie] because, as I say, he has a great sense of humor.
We just played a lot. I think that’s a really great tone that’s set for
everybody on the set. The lead actor has a really big influence on the
tone of the shoot. If you’ve got a guy who’s very difficult and neurotic
or whatever, they can’t help but affect everybody’s day. But Rob is not
like that. He’s just a ray of sunshine. In fact, he’s in absolutely
every scene of the movie, so obviously his temperament would have a huge
influence on how the shoot went … and it was a dream. It was a
beautiful shoot."
"You have to have a kind of screen charisma, you have to have a
presence, which you can’t buy or create; you either have it or you
don’t. That doesn’t mean you’re necessarily a good actor, though. But
you have at least that. I looked at all the stuff that he’s done, and I
thought he’s a really good actor. And then I spoke to him, and thought
not only that, but he’s a really smart actor. And he’s funny, and he’s
very sweet. That’s when I tried to convince him to do the movie, which
he was a little afraid of, just because I think he doesn’t know how good
he is, basically. And I think now that he’s done the movie, he’s
starting to understand how good he is. Because he’s terrific.
He knew my work, yeah. What’s interesting, too, about Rob is that he’s
very well educated in terms of movies and movie history and foreign
films. On the set, he and Juliette Binoche were talking about the most
obscure French films and stuff like that together. He really knows his
stuff. And yet, as I say, he’s a completely down-to-earth, sweet guy.
Lovely to work with. And very funny."
"Rob is a wonderful actor and I think he will surprise people . He is
young, he’s handsome, he has had great success with Twilight and many
people concluded that he was a bad actor. I'm aware of that. But I can
assure you he is very good and he works very seriously. The best way. Besides I can not wait to work with him again. I even
said I would love to have him and Viggo Mortensen in an upcoming film."
" Some actors become stars because they have a pretty face and charisma
that translate well on the screen. At first, they are rarely given the
opportunity to show they have more than that. And sometimes, that's all
they have... With Cosmopolis, I was proud to offer Rob a chance to prove
the extent of his talent. If he does well, I can see him having a
career like that of Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt. Maybe even better."
"He’s a terrific actor, trust me. I’ve directed some of the best in the world, and he’s terrific.”
Declan Donnelly & Nick Ormerod
" I think he's perfect for the role. He has those matinee idol good
looks, the sort of gigilo looks that those women completely fall for, and yet he has a darkness, and interest, and a vulnerability sometimes too."
"He's very bright too, and he understood the character. Rob's got an
enormous amount of talent, but we're all fascinated by this character
who has no talent."
"I've worked with actors for 35 years and some very, very good ones. Rob is unbelievably talented. He is not Georges Duroy."
"He's very much his own man, he's very quietly serious. All of that Rob hysteria you see
is completely absent from the set. There's no sense of that at all, he's
a nice guy from Barnes."
"He was delightful. He did insist on rehearsing for a whole month before we did our first
shoot, which is apparently unheard of in Hollywood, but he was
passionately attached to the project."
Claire Denis
"The first time I met Robert was in Los Angeles. He was on his own territory, and so at ease with the project that I ended up forgetting that the was so famous. When I saw 'Twilight' I liked it immediately because he has heart rendering charisma."
"Robert is very enigmatic with a powerful presence. He gives off an aura that immediately makes you want to film him."
Werner Herzog
“Pattinson is a very, very smart, very well-educated and intelligent
young man. When he says things in the film, they’re always credible. You
see you don’t just have a pretty face. It was a pleasure to have him
around. A good comrade, as well.”"
"He has charisma, he is smart, he writes. I hope we will see him one day as a director."
""This is a very intelligent man. Writes well. Knows exactly what he's doing."
Brady Corbet
"You can't take your eyes off the guy! Because he is beautiful to look
at, It's really like he draws you in, in a classic cold way. He is
compelling."
"Robert Pattinson is a friend of ours, and we really have a lot of
common interests and tastes. He’s really charismatic, and we thought it
would be wonderful to apply that charisma to these very early, seemingly
unimportant sequences, and only really by the end of the film do you
realise how significant they are."
Liam Cunningham
"I'd love to say he's a pig, but he's a really, really sweet,
self-effacing guy.I don't know how he's still sane after that s***. That
monster of a thing that happened to him, but he's an absolutely
delightful guy and he's lovely to work with. A handsome f***** too. "
Joel Edgerton
“I love (director) Anton Corbijn. I also have a real fondness for Rob Pattinson after his excellent work in The Rover. So I stopped into Toronto for two days to do 'Life'”
Anton Corbijn
"Rob was interested in the film because he really wants to prove himself and for me that was great for that role. If you look at the roles he's taking on – like the ones with Cronenberg – he really wants to do very different, non-mainstream films and get out of that pigeonhole."
Romain Gavras
"Before you meet him you imagine all sorts of things associated with huge stars, that he collects swords or walks around stark naked at home , but in fact, he's very professional, very straightforward and very normal."
Alessandra Mastronardi
"Robert Pattinson? Let’s dismantle the myth: he is not a sex symbol. he is cute, but he fascinates you more for his kind behavior and/or for his attitude of a damned genius. But then, just because of it, for me he is more interesting. He has the world at his feet but he never acts pretentious or superior. A couple of times I asked him personal questions about his work and career. He is a bit embarrassed and shy - and I'm Neapolitan - but once he opens up he's smiling and never dull. "
Eric Roberts

"It was a real pleasure to work with Rob, and he was such a nice guy on and off set. We talked about his upcoming projects and he mentioned the prospect of a vampire movie (Twilight). Little did we know that he was about to embark on a journey to super stardom. I'm delighted his career has taken off because he's without doubt one of the good guys!"
Kellan Lutz
"He's doing good work and he wants to work with great
directors and great actresses and actors and working with great
material, as we all should. He has the chops and he's doing what he loves to do and I'm so proud of him for everything that he's doing."
.Lutz said he believes an Academy Award is in Pattinson's
future.
Dane DeHaan
" He's a really nice guy. He's totally chill and he's fun to hang out
with, and he's fun to be on set with. We had a great time."
Nan Goldin
"What interests me about him is his person. Robert is a lovely boy, so
sweet, he loves playing guitar. Music is his natural element, probably
more than cinema."
Holliday Grainger
"He’s lovely, I’ve known him
since his pre-Twilight days when he was a normal person and it was still
like, “ooh you’re playing Cederic Diggory (in Harry Potter And The
Goblet Of Fire)”. He’s managed to keep very level headed and normal. I don’t understand
how. I can’t fathom the idea of living a life like he lives. On the set
of Bel Ami in Budapest there would be hundreds of screaming girls there
at 5am and they would still be cordoned off when we finished.
He had to move hotels because there were so many people outside his.
One day he was signing autographs on the way home from work at 6am after
a night shoot. Bless him, that’s an extra level of hard."
"He’s really easy going, and open – amazingly so considering he’s so closely
scrutinised. He’s still managed to maintain a sense of self. "
Hicham Hajji ~ Producer on 'Queen Of The Desert'
Jeff Rawle
Juliette Binoche
"I met Robert for the first time on set. I must admit that I hadn't seen his films. And I found in him a fierce passion for cinema, he knows the cinema much better than me. It was lovely and fun to work with him. He's a very ambitious man and one day wants to produce and direct his films."
Reese Witherspoon
“He's great. And oh my God, so handsome! What surprised me was his dedication. He would film all weekend long, then spend the week on the Twilight [set], then another weekend filming, then more Twilight... And he still had that lightness, humility. He's very grateful for everything he's been living.”
"I would say [he is] the hardest-working person I've ever worked with,
honestly, [He's] professional, hard-working, so
appreciative, more grateful than I've ever seen anyone for where he is
in life."
Uma Thurman
"He's very serious. He did a huge amount of rehearsals in his own time. I
think that's what you do when you're a young actor, when you take your
work very seriously and want to take it to the next level."
Jackie Zane played Lucinda in Water For Elephants.
"Robert Pattinson is a kind soul who always had a smile to share. He
was friendly as can be and I was lucky to have shared an amazing make-up
artist (named Jean) with him and we often chatted while waiting on one
another for our turn with her."
Paul Giamatti
