David Cronenberg talks about Cosmopolis and Robert Pattinson

Photobucket

This interview was similar to the recent compliments in the NY mag article. David Cronenberg sat down with Moviefone and conversation moved to Cosmopolis and the casting of Rob:
Would you ever agree to calling Viggo one of your muses?

No, though it is a sweet thought. I like Viggo. In fact, I love Viggo and we get along great. But I just shot 'Cosmopolis' and Viggo's not in it! [Laughs] I would hate to think I abandoned my muse to make that movie. No, but seriously, we love to collaborate and we love to be colleagues making a movie, there's no question about that. But you do an actor a great disservice by miscasting.

Your casting of Robert Pattinson in 'Cosmopolis,' someone whose acting might not be as critically lauded as Mortensen's, was obviously a well-thought-out decision, then.

Well, Keira's acting doesn't always get praise from high-brow critics, either. I would use that parallel. You have a young actor who's found success with a franchise just like Keira did with 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' who's underrated because of that. In each case, they're too pretty and too successful so people are jealous. As a result, people assume that they can't possibly be good actors.

So what was the exact motivation for casting Pattinson in 'Cosmopolis'?

He's the right age, he's got the right screen presence, and when I looked at his other work I thought he'd be really interesting for the role. Casting is a black art – it's a bit mysterious how you come to these things – and it's subjective, too, of course. As a director, there are no rules to guide you. You have to go with your gut, ultimately.
These interviewers are so dumbfounded. Like in the NY mag interview? *eye roll* I love that it's David Cronenberg who's schooling them.

I just want to kick asses of these interviewers asking the same stupid questions to Cronenberg. It's like they are insulting Cronenberg's professionalism with the question "Why did you cast Robert in your movie?"  The man saw some ranges in his acting watching RM, LA, so get over it! And he is not one of those directors for whom profit of the movie is on the 1st place.

Man, i just hope that next year during promoting Cosmopolis, journalists won't ask those dumb questions again at the presense of Rob.

At what point are these fuckers going to get it!!  Jesus Bloody Christ! ANYONE who made half an effort to understand the character of Edward before rushing to judgement about Rob's performance of him within The Saga films would understand that it is actually a VERY difficult character to bring to life.  But, I accepted long ago that Rob will never get the true accolades he so richly deserves for bringing us Edward.

But, at the very least, you'd think that a director like Cronenberg, with his casting history, would demonstrate that Rob does in fact have the chops to bring someone like Eric Packer to the screen, that Rob's talent is leaps and bounds above what he's been pigeon-holed by the narrow-minded elitest critics as being.

Kudos to DC for calling them what they are: JEALOUS!

Yup Mr.C.they are jealous and envious of Mr.P cause he's the answer to the question,"What Women Want."

the upside is that the more they ask dc the same question about casting rob, the more people will get schooled.  about rob and keira, as well.  i absolutely LOVE dc.  he must be an absolute pleasure to know and work with, judging by the vids i've seen.

I love that he describes Rob as being "too pretty".  Welcome to the dark recesses DC!

I agree.  All of these interviewers are so insulting.  Questioning his choices in casting his own movies!  I hope DC made them all feel like the complete idiots that they are.

I wish I knew how these insolent a-holes of a journalists get hired. Not a really well thought-out decision, I'll bet.

I'd love to be there when these interviewers are asking these ridiculous questions so I could give them a big 'ol smack in the head....maybe that would knock some sense into them, but then again you can't fix STUPID!!

well it looks like david is a little robsess himself. join the club dude

i actually agree with what he said about keira bc i was actually watching her in the recent pride and prejudice film the other day, and you see she may have been nominated for a best actress nod but nobody really payed too much attention to her  because everybody knows her as lizzie swan in POTC and i think thats also why she didnt want to be in the 4th pirates film this summer bc she wanted to stay away from the whole type cast fiasco and i dont blame her so if theres another twilight film after breaking dawn part 2 and rob decides to turn it down i wouldnt be surprised. i mean ill be sad but in my heart of hearts he deserves so much better. and on the last part it is all out of jealousy and green eyed monster envy

Mirandathevampgirl said...

that is correct people are so onesided and empty headed that its both creepy and sad so they are the ones hiding under a rock gee

I'm just thinking about how I reacted to this photo of Rob looking so damn fine.  It's only Rob that can cause such a physical reaction in me to a picture - it's electric!

The nearest I can come up with is if I'd just bought a lottery scratch card and suddenly found that I'd won a couple of hundred quid.  Although this hasn't happened to me, I can well imagine a typical reaction.  The anticipation that you might win.  A sudden burst of excitement that hits straight to the core when you find you have.  Looking again and again as if you can't quite believe it.  Not being able to think clearly for a few seconds.

A photo like this hits me in the same way.  Anticipation - a photo - is it going to be an especially stunning one?  My God it is!  A burst of excitement as the hotness of Rob hits my core.  Looking again and again because I can't believe how anyone can look this fine.  The inability to think clearly for a few seconds.  Gotta calm my breathing before risking another look.

I am not afraid, cause the BO said differently...
on tyhe other hand , the critics are what DC said...Jealous.

Robgasm said...

Totally with you. The first look is always coming along with increasing of the heartbeat and with every single time it seems to creep lower (oh I´m embarrassed). Every time I look at those Cosmopolis pictures he absolutely amazes me: I love the fierce and serious lookinh Rob ....it´s sooo......sooooo.....FIFTY

so true.

and if DC had hired diCaprio, Depp or Viggo, no one would have questioned his casting decision.

stupid morons.

Vote for ROB D6 is the last day at peoples choice award.don't forget WFE.

MrsRob said...

Oh abso-frickin-lutely!!  He looks like an irrisistable bastard here but so fine that we would be powerless to say no to any perversion!

Of course, the real Rob is sweetness incarnate but one photo is enough to not only illustrate his natural charisma but also his ability to portray any character.  I would say that the only thing the characters he has created so far have in common is the fact that they are all gorgeous but even then in totally different ways.

Surely even interviewers with limited knowledge of Rob will know Twilight and should have seen at least some previous interviews so should be able to see for themselves that Rob is obviously not Edward.  Why should anyone need convincing that the guy can act?

LovinRob said...

Favorite part "they're too pretty and too successful so people are jealous" AMEN to that! of course he is preaching to the choir here but thank you DC for seeing that he is an exceptional actor :-)

robmeblind said...

Your absolutely right and it seems to be THE question in every interview! why?
So glad DC is calling it like it is "jealous"....not escaping or sugar-coating his answers for anyone.
This man might be the best thing that ever happened for Rob.

robmeblind said...

Good point "people will get schooled"

Robert deserves a break.  There was an uproar when he was cast as Edward and he proved the negative idjits wrong.  Now, again, they question his placement in this role.  If I were Cronenberg
I would parenthetically asked the interviewer, "Have you read the book?"  Rob and Don DeLillo  works are perfect; quirky and high brow with a little dirt.

nikola6 said...

Why is Cronenberg being questioned about casting Rob? Because some critics don't think he can act and even those who do, don't think he's shown anything proving he's up for this role. And Cronenberg (whom they respect to the high heavens) is causing them to question their own judgement and they don't like it. What I'm wondering is, when this film comes out, will they take off their Twilight blinders long enough to judge Rob's performance on it's own merit OR will they dare say that David Cronenberg has gone soft in the head? And will David call them on their shit if they cannot give a "professional" assesement of Rob's performance? Yeah, I'm thinking he just might.
If this were Ryan Gosling or Michael Fassbender (who have more than proved themselves as two of the best actors of their generation) they'd be tripping over themselves in praise of Cronenberg's crackerjack decision to hire either of them. As I've said before, because of Twilight, Rob has a mountain to climb. He can only do it one film at a time with directors the caliber of David Cronenberg willing to give him the opportunities.

quillpenz said...

It is time we turned some light on the  interviewers who are too lazy to prepare for an interview.  They ask the same questions over and over, questions with answers  that they don't have to listen to since all the previous interviewers have asked the same things.  Questions like old worn out shoes.
Occupy Wall Street         Occupy Lazy Journalism.        Crowns for the Fake purveyers of information  who work as though  the news/human interest  were stale  cabbage soup or putrid castor oil.
