Brilliant *NEW* Interview With Robert Pattinson - Ever Wondered What Rob's Perfect Day Would Be Like

Photobucket

There isn’t a single actor of the current time so idolized as he: “Twilight”-Vampire Robert Pattinson. On Thursday the new film starts, right ahead of its release he speaks about fame, elephants, and the “first time”.

Rob, you could be crowned the most famous actor in the world right now. How do you deal with this strangeness?
There are good and bad days. I often wish I wouldn’t react in such panic. But I believe I can separate jobs from private life very well. So far my ego still hasn’t been injured!

Currently, it is surely not simple to be Robert Pattinson. Can you believe what all has happened in the past two years?
Honestly, I have always said that it’s a subjective glimpse of the whole. For me everything feels the same as before, but there are a few aspects of my life that are completely different. I would just like to not admit that it has taken over my entire life. For myself, in my head, it’s the same as it was in the old days; I also have the exact same friends.

You are 24 and, as it is, can’t be anywhere without bodyguards at the door. Doesn’t it stink to you that you can’t lead a normal life?
Sometimes. But then I remember how my normal life was: boring.

Where do you live now, in London or in L.A.? Do you perhaps have a home?
No, I don’t. My “apartment” consists of three suitcases, out of which I live. Inside of them is everything that I need. (Kate:Gosh I don't think I could ever fit everything into three suitcases LOL)

Isn’t that a very lonely life?
I work constantly, so I am always surrounded by people who ask me questions or give me instructions. That’s why I enjoy it if I can do something for myself. I don’t have any problems with having a two-month long period with no one to speak to.

How do you sympathize with Edward in respect to women? Is he the knight in shining armor about whom we apparently all still dream?
I hear often that this story is too old-fashioned and encourages women to take on subservient roles. I don’t think that at all! Even when Bella sometimes has moments of helplessness, she is still only a fictional character. What are we coming to, if every fictional film character is automatically a role model for our society!

“Twilight” represents very old-fashioned values. Bella and Edward first go to bed with each other after their marriage. Are you also against sex before marriage?
I believe rather, that everyone has sex before marriage (laughs)—then and now. I also don’t believe that girls ‘must respect themselves’ or that boys only want ‘the one’. If you behave like a gentleman, because chastity really suits you—okay. But if you take it for the newest fad in the dating world, then it’s rather off the mark.

You said once, you find that the saga, without sex, is sexy…
Yeah, I think so. Every one of us knows the time, before something happens between a couple, when you’re still totally insecure: Does the other person like me or not? That is definitely the riskiest time! This moment can last an eternity. To this sweet uncertainty also comes anxiety, especially if it’s the first time for both people. I believe this worry stirs up desire. And in this case, the period of desire lasts almost four books.

You are currently shooting “Water for Elephants” with the Austrian Christoph Waltz. How are you getting along with him?
Christoph is stunning, an insanely nice guy. He is not only a ridiculously good actor, he is also really funny, helpful, and a good colleague. I like his work ethic. I mean, the guy has won an Oscar—and despite that he is receptive, open-minded, and not the least bit snooty. And Reese Witherspoon is the same. It may be the nicest cast that I have worked with yet—a really great experience. (Kate: Awww, I bet they have good things to say about Rob too!)

You seem to only work. What would the perfect day look like for you?
Recently I stood in the desert, far outside of L. A., and watched the sun set on a circus tent from 1930. Everywhere stood animals: elephants, tigers that should be loaded into a steam train. 300 extras in costumes raced around, the modern world had disappeared totally. Although that was totally fake, it still happened directly before my eyes! That was my perfect day. I would be gladly experience that every day. It happens continually to me: It calls itself work. That is wonderful and more than enough.

Just one amongst many shining examples of why it is we adore this man. His perfect day... so simple and yet so profound. How many of us can find that kind of simple peace in our everyday lives, no matter how crazy they are?

The last perfect day I had was in Egypt. In the middle of the desert, the sand was all that could be seen, and behind me the pyramids... Never felt so peaceful in all my life. Lonely and secure at the same time... It was just perfect, a moment stolen from the crazyness of life.

Great interview! I'm glad he's talking about RL rather than Twilight. I have to think he's so tired of talking about Edward, Bella and Jacob. We love the real Rob more!

Rob continues to be such an incredible human being who is so in touch with who he really is and that person is beautiful inside and out. He is grounded and has values that bring him happiness in this crazy and frenetic world. He's at a point that many don't ever achieve. He is unique. He is awesome in every way.

While I've never crossed paths with him he has left his fingerprints on my soul and I'm richer because of who he is.

FILTM!

I love this interview and Rob's responses. He is amazingly intelligent and honest when he is actually asked intelligent questions by an interviewer no couching the questions as a way to find out about his personal life. I love his response to the sex question. It so right on the mark. Thanks for sharing the interview.

This was an insightful, hopefully more serious, less impish interview than most. As for: "What are we coming to, if every fictional film character is automatically a role model for our society!" We are at the point where there aren't enough real role models in real life and so people search elsewhere. Obviously most in the news are not being real role models for those with values. Maybe it is time?

As for: "I believe rather, that everyone has sex before marriage (laughs)—then and now. I also don’t believe that girls ‘must respect themselves’ or that boys only want ‘the one'".
There are still people who do not have sex before or outside of marriage-- some because they feel it is wrong or at least inapproprate; some because community pressure (and followng them around, keepng them chaperoned at all times, etc) would not allow for it, and some because, after careful thinking about(and even experiencing)emotional messes, physcal dangers, and other complications, would rather take care of their own sexual needs until they find 'the one' wth whom they trust, with whom they are fulflled and secure emotionally and intellectually (and spiritually if that is a concern/value) and/or are then married or in some other hopefully permanent relatonship together.
"But if you take it for the newest fad in the dating world, then it’s rather off the mark." I agree somewhat. Fads by definition come and go (wthout even talking of Michaelangelo). On the other hand, people looking for role models often are also looking for values or a game plan that will work, since others don't seem to be working, and if chastity is a fad that is tried, perhaps it will work for some, help some find their niche.

As for :"If you behave like a gentleman, because chastity really suits you—okay." I found the use of the word 'gentleman' so very interesting! So do you acknowledge that having self-restraint and not sleeping around is the gentlemanly way to behave? And what would you call someone not being a gentleman?

His perfect day does indeed sound lovely. Yet, it is not in the real world. Again, so very telling. I could write another long comment about this, but I won't-- for now.

evangeline--I actually think Rob is doing a fine job; I am really impressed with him except for the smoking (Although I aim to TREAT -in words and action-everyone with respect, I generally lose all emotional and cognitive respect for people who smoke, unless they have much else that I respect in spite of it, so obviously Rob has greatness that I recognize despite the smoking ;-)).

Seriously, I do understand physically why most would NOT want to be chaste, and I do understand intellectually why most in these times, in most places, would not choose that. Unfortunately, I also understand the longer term psychological and emotional ramifications of chastity as well as lack thereof.

It appears that even though a total negation of physical and emotonal/physical needs is not right for Rob, that he is at least a gentleman in that he doesn't talk about, advertise, publicize whatever relatonship he has or has had, and that he doesn't APPEAR to be body-hopping. This is particularly praiseworthy consdering the industry and place in which he finds/has placed himself.

I personally cannot stand the term 'p**** whipped. And I don't think Rob is brow-beaten or emasculated or whatever a polite term might be, anyway. He is a gentleman, but he is stubborn and does not like people telling him what to do.i

Great interview. I skim i/vs these days and move on if they sound suspiciously unlike Rob and this sounds genuine. Really lovely imagery at the end for the perfect day.

A thought provoking interview - which appears very relaxed & honest. I believe Rob is a gentle guy who has been raised with the right morals & respects women, but at the same time he is a guy of 24 & you can not expect him to act like a monk. The fact that he is discreet is a credit to him & his parents for what would appear to be a very stable up bringing. I love this guy & wish him all the happiness in the world for the future. I look forward to seeing how he develops further both in real life & in his movie choices.

I generally feel sorry for persons who indulge in vainglory. Learn what respect is, and then learn how to lose it. If you can....

These answers were definitely paraphrased and cleaned up - Rob puts a lot of "I mean" and "uh" and different phrasings and pauses, etc. into his speech.

I'd like to hear this interview rather than read it to get his inflection on some things - I really didn't understand his sex information and what he was really saying - other than people should just to do what you wanna do basically and not expect HIM to be your role model as he doesn't want that responsibility.

The perfect day was nice and sounded like something he mentioned in another interview of how he'd like to produce films and be behind the camera and watch the big picture and not even have the responsibility of the director.

We'd all hate to see him do that cause we want him ON SCREEN but ............he seems to like being a voyeur rather than the center of attention. Too bad Rob - cause you are the center of OUR WORLD.

I agree that written interviews with Rob, most especially translated ones, can most definitely lose a lot in translation. We all know how actually hearing his responses to videotaped interviews can elicit over-analysis, head-scratching about what did he really mean and did he really say that? So take with a grain what gets translated. I think of it as "Robspeak", he speaks, seems to have a lot to say, but at the end of the day, he rarely reveals much of himself, his truth (which perhaps is still a work in progress) and emotional depth. He describes himself as a cipher, with no thoughts in his head (more than once has he said this). Not humanly possible. I think he has a lot going on in his head, probably more than the average person. So much that when asked questions like what is your perfect day, he just comes out with the first thing and last experience he had that stuck with him that was special. Not to say that he hasn't revealed tidbits of himself here and there, how could he not having been asked and interviewed a zillion times over the past 2 years, but you just never can be sure with him, especially at this juncture. He's become more guarded and protective, not surprisingly.

Absolutely, Lallieb.
