The term "wifebeater" is an American slang, I think it originated after the WWII, and was probably made famous by Marlon Brando.
I realize it's an offensive word to some, and frankly I don't care...it's not a racist word, it's not limited to any certain ethnic group or culture...
And...truth be told, a lot of comments on this blog are offensive to me, including any and all religious speak, so we all have to deal...

It's a silly term I know, but I'm sticking with it....
Carole UK- I have been watching this site for a while now and have learned about that term. It refers to a sleeveless vest (T-shirt) and the disgusting title is apparently because actors playing a role of abusive husband on TV or in movies wear this sort of vest when beating their wives.
Intelligent couth people will not use this term. A week ago or so several people on this blog admitted they had been abused, and found the term terrible and mocking of pain, but some people actually choose to continue to use the term on this site, even putting it in upper case letters, as if in spite of those who protested.
Again, considerate, well-mannered people will not use the term, especially after being told it is offensive and brings up terrible memories to some women who visit this site.

I don't see religion mentioned here much, except when people wish each other good holiday and such. I do use the term 'soul' a lot-- is that a religious term that is offensive to you RPG? Or when we say someone will be in our prayers (as when someone lost a family member)? Or when some of us hope G-d will take care of ROb, etc? I guess those are religious terms! Somehow I don't equate that with the vest term.

BBD: your sensitivity to the use of loaded language is commendable, but your contention that no intelligent, couth, considerate or well-mannered person would use this term is condescending.... to say the least.
"Wifebeater" IS the widely used colloquial term for this t-shirt in American English. Underscoring what this term tells us about our culture and language is great, but issuing a blanket condemnation of any and all who use it is short-sided and doesn't help advance the debate in any way.
If you truly want to dig a little deeper into how different people view this issue, starting with the conflicting takes young men and women have on the term, this article is a good start.

rpg, come to think of it, i HAVE been offended, scond -hand, by some religious terms here; sometimes see other people's religions' figures used in a way that I would consider taking a name in vain, but because no one from that religion says anything, I end up wondering if it s only myself that is offended, and wrongly so, if they don;t say anything. Words DO matter to me, and I try to NOT offend, yet I see that i do sometimes. But please know that my intent is NOT to offend, and that if HAVE offended, i am sorry. However, it is hard to know what will offend everyone-- someone could say NewJersey and someone else might be offended--but if we KNOW that something seriously offends, or hurts someone, I would think we could find ways to avoid it, unless, I guess, it is really important to us, like an important value. But if I have offended by NOT sayng something when someone's holy people were mentioned in vain, I am sorry.

Great to see Rosie. I think the scenes of Jacob and Rosie are going to such a highlight. They have to show a deep connection and that means lots of sweet moments. The emotional scenes between him and Rosie will be amazing too and even more people will fall in love with Rob after seeing him like that. He'll be able to put a lot of himself into this role because he's so famously likeable and Jacob is such a lovely character - they have cast him perfectly. I can't wait and it's so far off!

Sorry (me again), I can't wait for the scenes between Jacob and Rosie too, they are such warm-hearted scenes in the book, and they are both great characters and unforgettable, Water for Elephants is just a fantastic book :)

Haven't weighed in on the "wife beater" shirt, but like it or not it's become an American tag (can't spell that other long word w/o looking it up!). I wore one under a blouse a while back and that was first I heard it. I immediately got the visual, whether from film or just stereotype of an obnoxious, ignorant, angry man, with a beer in his hand ready to go at his wife. Apparently, the UK gals don't have that cultural reference, which is not a bad thing.
Rosie and Rob will be priceless! Can't wait for this movie. And, yes, the book was great and hope everyone has read it.
