I am soooo excited to see this! I absolutely adored the book. Hal Holbrook is going to be great and I think Francis Lawrence did an amazing job with "I am Legend." Also, can't wait to see Rob of course!
Sounds good to me; I can picture him playing the crotchedy mischievous wanting-to-get-the-heck outta-there part. Does anyone know if there are any photos of Hal Holbrook from when he was younger, at or close to Rob's age? I would like to see if they have similar looks. I would also love to see ROb's photo go through the aging process they use in police photos, to see what he would look like at different ages!
OK, thanks--ROb doesn't look like that at all. However, Holbrook has a chin very much like Rob's father has, from what I recall. I like Rob's chinline much better.
Solas...nobody looked like Rob when they were young. lol. Nobody has/had Rob's chin/jaw line. No sirree.
But I agree with you all that Hal Holbrook will be a very good choice. Sorry, Nik, I know you were really keen that Rob do the Oscar-type role which playing the old Jacob would entail.
Oh my goodness. Robert gets to work with some great actors/actresses. Hal H. is one of my favourite and I think he will play an amazing older Jacob. I love the young/old Jacobs... Old was one was so funny.
I am certainly looking forward to all these great movies that Robert will be in for the next 2 yrs.
Nik was right... Hollywood love this guy and do we. :)
I am happy that the director was able to get Hal Holbrook for his first choice. He will add dignity to the role of the elder Jacob. I am certain Rob will be happy since Hal was in the movie Into the Wild with Kristen. I hope this helps Hal with his grief on losing his wife the wonderful Dixie Carter. That was an amazing showbiz couple.
Impressive casting. Old Jacob has a personality unto himself which is quite different than 'young' Jacob. He'd need to bring more than a resemblance to Rob to play the role - it's a great character part.
BUT all this aside... I did see this picture of Mr. Holbrook and Mia Farrow - and he does indeed resemble Robert's father, Richard.
jessigirl - take a look at this photo........looks something like Rob to me........Marlon Brando would be a good choice for an aging Rob if he weren't so overweight.
This is a young Brando - do you see some Rob features??
Oh... I had kept up my hope that somehow Rob will play old Jacob too... Can't the make-up team just age him?... He would shine more that way... Anyway, since you all said Hal Halbrook is a great actor, I feel better :)
fem... Good photo of Marlon(although white T bicep boy is the best)Boy I know I'm really prejudiced now, because, even if I look at the photo to analyze it, I can't get turned on! Only Rob does that.
I know, femroc, you meant maybe he could age into an old Rob. But he hasn't got the chin/jawporn going. His lips are okay but Rob's are just about the sexiest I've ever seen on a guy. And the eyes. Some bit of resemblance but not the knock-out, impregnating thing at all. No,no, no, no. And let's not get started on the hair. I went off topic, didn't I. I heart you, fem.
fem--I've seen photos of the young Brando that Rob really does resemble, and I sooo hope Rob does not let himself go and end up looking the way Brando dd when he aged.
I can't believe I'm doing this as I have absolutely no time tonight. But I raced down the blog and saw this and just had to comment.
Yes. I'm disappointed that Rob will not be playing old Jacob in that I think it would have been an incredible opportunity for a 24 year old actor. It's not too often that an actor so young, gets the chance to play a character in which he ages 70 years. But...I've let that go.
And I am absolutely thrilled with the choice of Hal Holbrook. He is one of the greatest and most respected actors in America and he will be an amazing old Jacob (I just wish there was a way that Rob could have a scene with him).
Hal had a small role in Into The Wild and he was just heartbreaking. It got him his first Oscar nomination in his entire career. Unbelieveable. And now I'm thinking, as wonderful a role as old Jacob is, maybe they'll honor him again with another supporting nod or even give it to him outright.
The thinking at the time is that he might have won it for Into The Wild as a sort of 'lifetime achievement' sort of thing and of course the oversight by the Academy for never having nominated him before, not to mention that he was 82 when he gave that performance and if they're gonna give it to him, they better do it now because he might not ever get another chance at a nomination. But he didn't win.
And now with old Jacob, he most definitely has another chance. This is a role that could certainly get him a second nomination. And maybe this time, the Academy will take this second chance (if it comes to that) and get it right and finally honor the great Hal Holbrook.
Wouldn't that be lovely?
And if Rob were to also pull down a nomination (and he sure enough could because it's a great role AND especially if he suceeds first as DuRoy, showing critics that he's more than just a teen pin up) it would be a repeat of Kate Winslet and Gloria Stuart. Both nominated for playing Rose in Titanic.

I think he's a good choice, I can see him playing that part.
Ohhh, he's great!
Fantastic choice. Hal Holbrook is a great actor and will play the older Jacob to perfection.
Great pick with great underappreciated actor.
His features will line up very well with Rob's,
to boot!

Okay, I had to look him up but I totally agree Loisada! His features will line up perfectly with Rob's.

Hal Holbrook is a perfect pick for Old Jacob!
He's fantastic, but I wonder if it will be difficult for him though being as his wife just passed away.

I just finished the book yesterday and I miss it!!! LOVE that Hal has been cast as old Jacob. LOVE!!!!

Really gotta run.
*googles* Ah, that sweet old man from Into the Wild.. Yes, he would be perfect for the role. Looks just like I imagined he would in the book.
