A Note From Bill Condon To The Twilight Fans
Greetings Twihards, Twifans, Twilight Moms, Team Edward, Team Jacob and Team Switzerland,
I just want to say hello to all of you and let you know that I'm stoked to be getting underway on the adventure of making BREAKING DAWN. As you've probably heard, I've been given a very warm welcome by Stephenie and Team Summit - who are super-focused, as you know, on getting these movies right.
I'm pretty busy bringing myself up to speed on what you already know by heart: I've read BREAKING DAWN twice, rewatched Catherine's and Chris's movies 2-3 times each, have all four CDs playing in my car, and have Catherine's notebook, Mark Cotta Vaz's companion books, and even Volume 1 of the graphic novel here on my desk - a corner of my office is starting to look like Hot Topic. I realize that this barely qualifies me for "newborn" status in the universe you've been living inside for a few years now, but a guy's gotta start somewhere. (Kate: Aww Bill, be prepared to be addicted!)
Like many of you, I've always been slightly obsessed with vampires, dating back to the prime-time series DARK SHADOWS, which I followed avidly as a kid. But that alone hadn't been enough to get me interested in making a vampire movie, even though my early screenwriting and directing efforts grew out of a great love for horror movies and thrillers. Since making GODS AND MONSTERS thirteen years ago, however, I've been yearning for a return to a story with Gothic overtones.
The wonderful world that Stephenie has created has obviously struck a chord with you, and I don't think it's difficult to see why. For me, her characters are simultaneously timeless, yet very modern. Rooted in a beautiful, real landscape with a great sense of place, Bella, Edward, Jacob, and the rest of the Forks/La Push menagerie, experience emotions that are primal, and universal: desire, despair, jealousy - and it all comes to fruition in BREAKING DAWN. This is a final chapter in the best sense; not just wide in scope and scale, but emotionally charged and intense throughout.
I'm a huge admirer of the already-iconic Kristen, Robert, and Taylor, and wanted to be the one to work with them as they face the challenges of bringing your beloved characters to the end of their journeys. Really, what could be more fun than that?
Please feel free to ask questions in the comments section below, and I'll do my best to answer them. I hope that this will be the first of many occasions I'll get to check in with you as we set to work bringing BREAKING DAWN to the screen. I am excited and grateful to have all of you alongside me for my TWILIGHT journey.
All best,
Bill Condon
P.S. Answer #1: No, there won't be any musical numbers
(Kate: What?? You mean it won't be like this?? Aww bummer I'm SO disappointed! Goz where's the sarcasm font? ;-))

How sweet to send this little note to the fans!
Hope he does a good job and gives us all the Edward/Bella we need and keeps the honeymoon, the birth of renéesmée and Bella's transformation.
Though it's important, i hope he doesn't insist too much on Jacob's side of the story... I'm looking forward to see how he goes from some kind of reality to nearly heroic fantasy with the end scenes... It's gonna be great...
Poor guy!!! I ve read almost everything of what is posted. I just wish him good luck. We are difficult to please us twilight fans.
Yes to 3D, no to 3D.
Yes to inprinting, no to inprinting
Yes to two movies, no to two movies.
Yes to Jakes's POV no to Jake's POV. Oh La La I could go one for ever. We will drive him crazy that's for sure.
Welcome to Twilight world Mr Bill, fasten your seat belt, this is gonna be a hell of a ride.
I think it's only appropriate to have Team Go Edward for Breaking Dawn, in addition to Team E, J and Switzerland.
Wow, Mr. Condon. Has he now fears that he makes a mistake? Or why this report on its knowledge of Twilight? Do the other directors sent a message, too?
Yes, the "Twilight - world" is not simple. Be on your guard, Mr. Condon. We watch you. LOL
BTW I hope he makes a good job. Good luck!
I am so happy for the actors and especially for Bill Condon that he is definitely the director of Breaking Dawn. I love his note to the fans, as I noticed, he is really a gentleman and is very concerned (in a good way) in doing a great job, which is excelent. I am suspected to write about him because I am a huge fan of his previous works: Gods and Monsters, Kinsey, Chicago and Dreamgirls. In all of them he was the screenwriter and with the exception of Chicago, he was the director of the others.
His work is already recognized by the critics and certainly Breaking Dawn will give him a huge popularity. It will be excellent for the actors a director who loves writing, and writes very well because he will always be interested in guiding the actors. He knows a good film is not made only of a good cinematography, a good editing, a good screenplay, special effects, a good soundtrack, much money and etc. All these factors without the emotion and the passion of the actors involved, are nothing.
He did a great job with the actors, I am still very impressed with he did with Brendan Fraser (Gods and Monsters) and Eddie Murphy ( Dreamgirls ), for example, and I quote them here because many critics did not take the works of these actors seriously. They are good actors and Condon gave them a good chance to prove it.
Despite all the boring stuff Condon will have to face, and I am not going to quote them, I am very excited to see him in action, especially with Rob, maybe Edward Cullen now will have the oportunity that he deserves and Robert Pattinson, finally, the recognition he always deserved and deserve.
Good Luck, Bill!! I love you, I am twisting for you and most of all I am twisting for Rob.
I love you Rob!!!! Happy Labor Day!!
God bless you all. Happy Labor Day!!!
LMAO Dina..... So true! It's a divided world in the saga fandom for sure...
I think it's a thoughtful letter to the fans and I appreciate it...and yes we will be watching, waiting abd critiquing every move!
He seems to have a good since of humor. Hope that gets him through this. LOL
I hope he makes breaking dawn breathtaking and amazing to nonfans and especially to us fans. The book is a really complex one in that so many people hate it as there are that love it (the latter includes me). I hope this letter does not just try to get on a twilighters' good side but that it means he is really going to pull his hair out to make all the elements work and flow smoothly. His previous works were amazing but I want to make my final judgement (sounding so strict and stern right now, hehehe) him based on how he juggles with everything that will come along and still make the movie A+ in everybody's eyes.
Have they announced yet whether it's 1 or 2 films?
@Ltavares, Nic
What does a screenwriter do? Please enlighten me. So having 2 sort of writers in a film, MR is the screenplay/script (are these the same)?, does that mean they can bounce off ideas about the film's diaglogue, etc. with the director having the final say or SM comes to the fore?
Here at Robsessed, do we believe in BD, E&B should be the main focus as this is their story? The wedding, honeymoon (everybody is looking forward to this, aren't we?), Bella getting pregnant, the delivery of the baby,(forming a family) tranfsormation, fight with the Volturi with the alliance with warewolves. If so, then this is the message we have to send to the new director.
With the imprinting issue, if SM wants Jacob (as many said, he was SM's favourite character), then SM can write a Sequel? dealing with issue in the future. At least in BD, SM has laid the foundation for another storyline about Jacob's character with Renesmee.
We'll see what happens in the finished product. Our best wishes to the new director. May he serve as the catalyst to all factions in the movie. !!!!
What a nice gesture and how good of him to sincerely present his effort to be true to BD. We'll keep our fingers crossed, but sounds very positive. Bring on the honeymoon!!
Well, if it was up to me I would have one long movie and end it after Bella becomes a vampire. Didn't care for the whole Jacob imprinting story.
...Maybe i'm one of the minority but I would like Breaking Down to be 1movie the sooner Rob is done with Twilight films the better so he can dedicate his time in doing other movies. It doesnt matter to me if Breaking Down will be 3 hours long, the last Lord of the Ring movie was (if i'm not mistaken)3hours long &people still went to see the movie...Anyway thats just my opinion...
like the way that he talk=)) and the video is well no LOL but a little funny
Sigh. OK, fine, you're in, Mr Condon. You've been tolerated.
Welcome aboard Billy!! *smacks azz* Im soo happy I got this letter on my Birthday -Breaking Dawn is my fav book cause Bella fought so hard for love and in the end she gets what she wants. I wish all women get the happy ending and marry the man of their dreams. Im happy they chose wisely-he sounds great and thoughtful. Please dont forget the passion and the chemistry of Bells and ole Edwardo. The fans miss the steaminess...
I hope he will take time to screen the movie in front of lots of fans first before the final cut.
Chris W. didn't do that and he wished he had done it later.
We all know that a brooding Edward is a sexy Edward....I wonder what a happy Edward will look like?
I've rewatched all his movies and I swear, Rob's managed to change his face in every one of them. He's subtly different in each one. And it's not just the hair or clothes, he becomes the character so thoroughly that he looks like a twin of himself (you know, with slightly different features?) It's not like with most actors. I mean, I can watch Sean Penn and Harrison Ford in different movies, but they still look like themselves while portraying other people. With Rob, it's different. I think Catherine Hardwicke noticed that when she said that Rob is Rob right before a shoot, but when it's time to film, he changes into Edward.
I wished him luck, but I did ask him to keep an eye on the Rosenberg woman, that when she picks a scene from the book, she actually sticks to the words in the book.
This is premature, since we haven't seen Eclipse yet, but I would love for BD to be a really great movie. Despite it's flaws, in retrospect, CH did some things right in Twilight. The film critic in my city, nationally well respected, actually gave it 3 stars (only learned that recently after NM, which he gave 1 star to) and the fact that I have watched it many, many times, as have you all I'm suspecting, suggests it strikes a chord and entertains on many levels, not just the gift of Robward. It's biggest flaw IMO, the screen writer, MR, as well as a measly budget. @Athena, wise comment. My wish: that BC uses the book as a blueprint, but elevates the story and uses his wisdom and expertise to create a world (see Avatar) that enchants, entertains, and transports us. As the Director, it is my impression that he will have a lot of control and authority (Nik?), but, of course the ultimate authority is the suits at Summit, and how much SM (as a producer) and MR come into the mix may decide whether BD is a win or not. Directors are often replaced over "creative differences." Mr. Condon may well have his work cut out for him on this gig. Although, surely there was much discussion about his vision of the film prior to being hired.
P.S. If anyone knows how to give feedback to Mr. Condon on FB and feels like my Wish for BD is worthy, please feel free to do so.
I went to the facebook page and saw no place to comment, only a bunch of comments.
And the musical clip!!! HAd me laughing!
My hope is the story finally ends with BD as one movie. I can't understand why they insist on keeping MR as the screenwriter. She has wonderful words to work with from the book but leaves them out. I felt the ending to New Moon was rushed. The reunion, the plane ride home, the bedroom scenes where Bella insists she's dreaming, the trip on his back to the house, all important dialog and scenes that were not included in the movie.
BD was the most difficult book for me to get through. Too much Jacob. Loved the wedding, honeymoon, birth and transformation. I wish him all the best. This movie may prove to be quite a challenge for him due to all of the attention from the fans of the books.
