Robert Pattinson - Remember Me Review from CutPrintReview

Another one with spoilers... read with care!

Something unexpected happened around the half hour mark of the ho-hum romantic drama Remember Me. No, the film didn’t start to improve. Don’t be silly. Rather, I realised that leading man Robert Pattinson – or RPattz as his legions of adoring Twilight fans call him – was in the middle of doing something many critics said he wasn’t capable of. Yes, he was acting. And doing a pretty darn good job of it too.

However, aside from allowing Pattinson a chance to flex his acting chops, Remember Me isn’t good for much else. It sits awkwardly between the heavy drama and teen romance genres, and much like a misunderstood teenager, it isn’t sure where it belongs, ultimately alienating itself from both.

With an uncanny resemblance to James Dean, Pattinson portrays angst-ridden Tyler Hawkins, a 21-year-old Brooklyn boy with daddy issues. Still cut from by the loss of his older brother years before, Tyler channels his anger toward his father Charles (Pierce Brosnan), a successful businessman who places family a distant second. After a clash with a jaded police detective (Chris Cooper) lands him in jail for the night, Tyler’s best friend Aidan (Tate Ellington) suggests he enact his revenge by wooing the officer’s daughter Ally (Emilie de Ravin). However, the two find comfort in each other’s company and eventually fall in love, causing Tyler to bury the truth behind their supposed ‘chance’ encounter.

As implied by the film’s tag-line ‘Live Life in the Moment’, screenwriter Will Fetters has scribed a story about appreciating the little things. That’s fine, but did those little things all have to be this mundane? While the dialogue flows naturally, most of the drama in Remember Me lacks any real weight of consequence, haphazardly strung together by director Allen Coulter (Hollywoodland) without much consideration for dramatic tension. If it wasn’t for Marcelo Zarvos’ poignant score, I wouldn’t have known at any given time what emotion I was supposed to be feeling.

With Remember Me predominantly appealing to starry-eyed teenage girls, it doesn’t help that the romance between Tyler and Ally is criminally underwritten. The two barely get a chance to share sob stories before they’re in each other’s pants. I guess when you’re the adored star of Twilight, girls don’t put up much of a fight. Nevertheless, the credibility of their relationship suffers as a result, which seems more interested in giving Pattinson and De Ravin an excuse to show off some skin than develop in any kind of meaningful way.

De Ravin, let down by the two dimensional nature of her character, leaves little impression as Ally, which is a shame because the 28-year-old Lost star has talent. With a far meatier role, Pattinson crafts a likable character out of Tyler, handling each emotional shift far more convincingly than he ever did as Edward in Twilight. He goes head to head with acting veterans Chris Cooper and Pierce Brosnan and surprisingly comes out on top, proving he’s more than just a pretty face. In fact, the only time he is truly outshone is during his scenes with the tremendously talented 11-year-old actress Ruby Jerins, who plays Tyler’s younger sister Caroline. Their touching relationship is easily the highlight of an otherwise unremarkable film.

And that’s the cruel irony here; Remember Me is totally forgettable. It knows it, too. That’s why it features a shock ending that arrives like a sharp stab in the back, a desperate act to bleed emotion out of the audience in the most shameless of ways. If it is to be remembered, it’ll be for all the wrong reasons.

Hmmm. Been expecting a review like this all week. Had been wondering when someone would eventually take issue with certain things. Remains to be seen what the general public thinks, after viewing the movie themselves.

(Being vague on purpose, for those who wish to remain spoiler free.)

...i read somewhere that this review is spoilerish for those who wish to remain RM virgins..

Eh, whatever.

Critics are just...blah...

I don't like them very much. :)

I like that he at least admits Rob and Ruby are the best thing in the movie. its just the story he doesn't like

hawun1974 said...

maybe he just doesnt like the story, but he acknowledge that Rob more just a pretty face

Anonymous said...

It's not a bad critic, it's a critic... There couldn't be just good reviews.. After all, he admits that Rob is a good actor but that the movie is forgetable... Aren't all movies forgetable, except for those who have that special something?

Anonymous said...

Some people are bound to hate this.... I mean this person must be sleepy or pre-occupied to make a good enough review. This critic seems to point out that he/she can barely feel anything. that it is mundane. Ugh, aren't the little things in life mundane. They are routine and that's why you live in the moment because you never know when it stops.
Anyways, Rob you still do no wrong in my eyes and at least, it seems to this critic too.

Anonymous said...

critics are good, to improve his careers

Anonymous said...

It's a contrived popcorn flick is what the reviewer is basically saying. Which is a shame because it did have potential. It got lost in trying to appease the tween base as well the adult one. Serious films are almost always rated R. As much as I like the story I felt like it was catering too much to the female genre as well. Such is the business of movie making to either sell movie tickets or to make a quality film.

Maryann said...

OK so the critic didn't care for the movie, called it unforgettable even. I make my OWN judgment on that when I see it. But the critic said that the actions on Tyler and Ally's relationship was too mundane...hello? Live consist of LOTS of mundane stuff...it isn't always over the top!

But apart from that, well the critic didn't like the movie but still praised Rob, so still good news for Rob :-). Even in the midst of a "negative" review he still get praise. That is good for Rob. It would be worse if it was the other way around or both got bad reviews.

And this is one review amongst MANY great ones.

Dear Critics,
All you need is ROB.
That is all

Ugh, all these reviews coming out make me even more depressed of the fact that apparently my local area has decided not to put Remember Me in theaters until March 31st.

But anyway, critics are critics, but still human beings, so of course there'll be bad reviews amongst them, there's not a movie out there that is liked by all six billion people in the world. That's just impossible. And any publicity is good, right?

drabrasil said...

there always will be some critics/people thAT WILL dislike some kind of movies...
I really do not give a f***ck to them..

my hubby and sons hate all twilight saga story...but what I can do??? nothing...

I did see NM ten times and willing to see RM the same way, so... I am sure that the story is good and our boy is a good actor.

what they are saying about avatar? avatar is another romance story, with a different story line and full of special effects, but a romance...

Criticism is part of the art. Rob is well on its way. He has already proven that he is good. He dares to so many different roles. That says a lot. Wish you a wonderful sunday everyone.

Hmmm looks like this guy didn't like at all the general story - I find it kind of cruel when he says that the film is forgettable but then I'm a bit biased, I'm expecting so much from this film!. However there is a constant: Rob's acting is really good even if it is - again - a grudging praise. Sigh. Anyway, I can't wait now to get the feedback from top reviewers.

When it comes to movies...I decide for myself....I had a feeling RM would come under fire with the critics, at least Rob did get some kudo's in for proving his "acting chops", but I don't always go by what the critics say, alot of the time if they say they didn't like it for what ever reason, more often than not I do, so what ever, I'm going to see it no matter what.

Yes, we will now be hearing all the reviewers opinions, which have, so far all been positive to Rob. That's good. I'll bet this critic was really proud of himself for coming up with his ironic statement~RM is forgettable. Ugh!

Really great movies don't come along every three months. RM may not prove to be one of those great movies, but it does establish one salient point that his fans have known forever: the man is an incredible actor who conveys so much emotion with his essence that HE is simply NOT forgetable. He stands out in a crowd, not because he was blessed with good looks, but because of his magical presence.

That great movie will come to Rob. It's exciting to realize that we'll get to adore him and be taken along for the ride. Critics have a lot to catch up on. At least they're beginning to realize that the movie does not make the actor. When given the chance, Rob can and will make the movie. He's proven it.

I ramble...I adore him and support him and know that one day there will be an incredibly well-written script taylor-made for Rob. And I know he'll be up for the job. He is one hawt guy who was destined to be a great actor. Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Johnny Depp, Rob Pattinson...there are others, but I just can't remember them right now.

FILTM!

noisefaidaus said...

Am I wrong, I thought RPatz was the name his given by the media and not fans.

It stands to reason that not everyone is going to like the movie, and i would have been rather suspicious if one like this didn't appear.

xoRobxo said...

The critics opinion doesn't bother me. It's his quote that "RPatzz as his fans call him". I read that ALL the time. The funny thing is I never hear his fans says that... all I hear the media refer to him as that saying his fans call him that...and Perez Hilton doesn't count:)

Though, the next morning, THIS would be on top of you again? Aww, I know I deserve it! I'm a good girl.
The difficult thing (to me) would be to get off of bed, off of the shower-together, get dressed (!), and leave THIS to go to work.
Also my 'concentration' would be ruined for the day... all day thinking on the next night...
=)

Have a wonderful sunday, all of you ladies! It is Oscar's day today! Yeah!

I've always wondered about movie critics... are they scriptwriters? Are they fail actors... because they always seems that they can do better than they people who are involved in movies... at least this movie was shown to them. Some movies are not and then they will say thats not good. I personally never see a movie when they critique it... their taste and mine are totally different.. What they rave about is ho hum for me and what they pan are great for me. So, RP, PB and the little girl Ruby appeals to me ...I kind of like sob stories and as a fan of both RP and PB... that is all it will take and I am sure I will enjoy the story... but you know what... sometime when the critic pans a movie... ppl will make up thier minds.

modestypatch said...

Pffft!

I take what critics say with a grain of salt. They are called critics because they are critical and in most cases have become jaded and cynical.

The one thing that has been constant throughout all the reviews so far is that Rob can act. But again, we all knew that!

Can't wait to see the movie. I think I know what I will think about it, but I may need to see it multiple times to make a proper judgement.

Ahhhhh! Multiple times with Rob........sounds like heaven! ;)

Good morning to those in the US, good afternoon to those in Europe/UK

Let me be a critic for a moment. I've seen the movie and it's beautiful, it's thoughtful and even funny at certain points and Rob's range of emotions were breathtaking. I may be a huge fan, but this movie will stick with me for quite a while. I will not forget Remember Me.

@CullenLovers07
Thanks for giving us your feedback on the film - I was beginning to fret and worry that even though Rob's performance was brillant maybe the plot was weak or lacking or something... however you say the film is good, and so do all the other reviewers sofar, so maybe that was the odd reviewer who didn't like it. Or maybe he absolutely wanted to post his rather poor pun about the title (Remember be/forgettable - pfff oh pleaaase)... I guess I'll wait for more reviews before I worry myself to death :)). Anyway a big thank you!

Well. I saw Alice in Wonderland last night with my husband and both of us almost fell asleep. I have to keep pinching him to keep him awake. It was ho-hum for me, drags in a lot of places, so totally overhyped and I totally regretted not waiting for it to come out in bluray so I can just rent it. Johnny D is good, but not enough to make that movie a "wonder" even with all the 3D effects, which I've seen better.

solas said...

I understand that not every critic appreciates every movie, and I understand that not everyone will like the same thing. But I have read the script, and unless something went very wrong in the directing and/or editing, this critic did not 'get' the movie. Like too many others, he also did not 'get' Edward; I keep seeing complaints of Rob's acting in Twilight, saying he was 'stiff' or 'wooden' yet those who complained were obviously not familiar with the character, who was portrayed spot on by Rob.
And yes, I too wonder if at least some critics are failed wannabes. In any case, some appear to have lack of comprehension.

RTP_KJS_Lover said...

Hey RobsBondGirl and Rum - Fans make the difference. This is really the only negative review I have seen and it's negative about the movie not Rob, so that's good. Like a lot of us have said, not all critics will like it, and that's fine. I always think it's funny when critics bash a movie and then it goes on to be a blockbuster, like Valentine's Day.
I truly loved Remember Me, it's very emotional and very real, and superbly acted, IMO. You'll love it.

Please sign this for RM Saturday.

sometimes i think, what's a critic? i mean, who decides who are a critic or not? which are the criteria that turn someone into a critic?

i got the feeling that, sometimes, critics believe they have the truth on one hand and God on their other hand.

and i'm not saying that only for this review, but for many reviews i've read about other films

@CullenLover07 That OK well I live about 400 miles east of your just across the border jaunt into Ontario, little place called Brantford.

AP said...

Although grudging, at least there is kudos for Rob, and Ruby. Em is slighted. I agree on one point - I never much liked the contrivance setting up their relationship. It works on one level, but not on another. However, they succeed in building convincingly beyond it. I disagree RM 'sits awkwardly' and like that it crosses genre boundaries, but it will make it harder for some to appreciate.

People seem to have very high opening estimates for the movie, which I assume are based on Rob's appeal, rather than the usual expectations of a romantic drama. I hope it does do better than Dear John, but we'll see...

noisefaidaus said...

I wonder if part of the problem with crossing genre is the fact that it's PG-13 and therefore has difficulty find it's place convincingly.

I will be satisfied if the performances are solid.

solas said...

I also don't understand why the critic describes this film anywhere NEAR a teen romance genre; am wondering if he is brnging in the association wth Twilight again. Again, I have read the script but have not seen the film yet, but unless something got ruined along the way, I would not call it a teen romance. To me it is more a drama of all the characers, and not just Tyler and Alli, finding and understanding their Selves, amid family love and stress and family dysfunction.

MMc said...

CullenLover - what else is opening next weekend?? Why do you think it will be #2????

crazy vamp said...

I did not read the script, and it will take awhile for me to go see this movie... So, I cannot say anything about it; except that I hate when they come out and say, in surprise, 'he can actually act!'. Ugh! If you knew anything about the 'Twilight' books you would figure out how good he is as Edward. I'm not crazy for the character, but he did a great Edward, concerning that it is a difficult character. And what about his Dali? Brilliant!
I'm so looking forward for his Duroy, not only because of all the sex stuff in it (well, okay, because of that too...), but mainly because he is working with some of my fav actresses, and I'm sure his performance (which is continuously improving) will be great and shut some critics mouth.
(sorry for my mistakes in english; too tired -- working HARD on weekends too)

:)))

WhyIstheRumAlwaysGone said...

Does anyone know if there is any "serious" Web site posting opening estimates for RM? I'm just curious... I've just found on the Mojo box office site that RM will have 1900 theaters in the US. Another question - do you think we will be plagued by screaming teens?? They ruined NM for me...

noisefaidaus said...

Screaming teens?? Someone yesterday came up with the idea of taking their ipods hostage and threatening the ipod if the teens screamed.

solas said...

Thank G-d, I had no screaming teens any of the times I saw New Moon, just squealing women. ;-) (And laughing at the running in the forest scene):-( )

I am not sure if this film itself will appeal to teens, although some or many might go just to see ROb. On the other hand, isn't it on a less permssible rating that would prevent many teens from going? Or do I misunderstand the ratings?

noisefaidaus said...

@ Solas RM is rated PG-13 same a Twilight, welcome to my nightmare screaming tweens!

Guys, there is a new review in rotten tomatoes from this australian guy. It just absolutely gave the movie the worst critique. It says the movie and actors were bad. It had lots of comments below it though. After reading this review, I just wanted to personally slap this moron of a critic. Anyway, he is a guy so maybe he hates Rob too.

OH DEAR ROB, JUST KEEP DOING YOUR BEST. THAT RECOGNITION WILL COME.
