Reacting To 'Remember Me': An Interview With Screenwriter Will Fetters

This is a great Interview and a must read AFTER you've seen the movie of course!

NOTE: This interview contains story details that will spoil the ending of Remember Me. If you have not seen it yet, not only do I urge you to head to the theater, but you also may want to skip reading this interview until you have.

Anyone that read my review of Remember Me already knows I enjoyed it, and was one of the select few. In fact, I have strong opinions of the film, not from the perspective of how great the acting is or whether director Allen Coulter turned in a tour de force bit of filmmaking navigation, but merely at the idea behind the film and its intentions. However, it's intentions, it seems, have been largely lost on the critical community.

Remember Me has been painted as a romance story by the majority, but is it? I saw it as something entirely different. As a result, it became a case of reading review after review and saying to myself those most cliche and pompous of all phrases, "They just don't get it." But instead of writing some all-encompassing editorial of how I thought I was right and everyone else was wrong I decided to go to the source. I contacted Summit Entertainment and requested interviews with first-time screenwriter Will Fetters and director Allen Coulter. Coulter, as it turns out, is on vacation for a week, but Fetters was available for a conversation and our discussion ended up being more than enough when it came to realizing my intentions of the piece.

Fetters began work on what is a very personal script for him in 2004, at the age of 22. The story had been boiling around in his head for about two years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and while trying to go to law school, it took a misunderstanding with Delaware law enforcement to finally find a starting point, a misunderstanding that can be seen in the film in a slightly fictionalized form as Tyler (Robert Pattinson) is arrested by Chris Cooper's character. In fact, Will describes the film as very personal, saying the relationship between Tyler and Caroline (Ruby Jerins) is a very literal one, resembling the relationship he has with his two younger sisters. While this relationship, and the relationship between Tyler and his family and his new girlfriend (Emilie de Ravin) and her family are central to the story, it's not specifically about those relationships.

So what is the film about? What were Will's intentions? This was the starting point of our interview, which took place on Monday, March 15, three days after the film was released to largely negative reviews (28% on RottenTomatoes) before going on to make $8 million opening weekend after being made for $16 million.

Featured below is our lengthy conversation addressing what the film is about, the critical reaction and how Fetters is handling such negativity on what is only his first screenplay.

What is the film about and what were your intentions?

Will Fetters (WF): It seems people didn't seem to get what the film was about. I think on some level, even getting what the film is about, people aren't necessarily going to like it. I think preconceptions tend to play a role, and what this film was, in a lot of ways, was a study of grief and a study of these "bolts from the blue" that alter the trajectory of life and for me the script started as a 22-year-old kid's therapy session.

I had some personal tragedy in my life and this broader event occurred and it dovetailed what I experienced as a young man into the same kind of anger and sadness that follows, and this story, this script, was a way to kind of work it out.

I think the fairest criticism that I've read is going after the basic story points, which when you write a love story you're going to tread on similar grounds, that kind of stuff I really get. Some of the dialogue is a little cute and some of it seems contrived, I get that, but I think a lot of people aren't getting what our intentions were. Like the idea I wrote this 100-page script and then with five pages left I didn't know how to end it so I did this with 9/11. It was so far from that. This whole movie is about dealing with that trauma, dealing with that anger and trying to see how people can be united and divided by it.

Head over to Rope Of Silicone to read the rest of this lengthy, brilliant Interview. You won't be sorry!

Don'tworry Will Fetters, I got it. Anyone with a brain understood that movie wasn't about romance. It was about living life. I loved i! I now have reason to completely disregaurd anything the critics say. Their proven to be self ritcheous morons who thinks their opinion matters. Whats sadder is that I find the movies they poo poo, I end up loving. I watched a jack ass on Reelze channel say Rob cant act and that he was stealing from James Dean. I wanted to vomit! I feel so bad for Rob because it was a good film, a good scrpit and the movie meant somthing.

It's just too bad that so many people read the reviews of so few. We know better and yes, we got it!!!! Brilliant movie.

I haven't even seen it yet but I have read the script and I got it! Live for now and tell the people you love how you feel! I can't wait to see it but I'm gonna have to hide in the corner at the back of the cinema so no one will see me crying! It's gonna be UGLY!

Thank You, Mr. Fetters, for writing the beautiful script which became this breathtaking movie titled "Remember Me".

Your talent is VERY much appreciated!

I was so irritated with the reviews for this movie. I'm hoping it gains some steam by word of mouth. It truly is a beautiful film with powerful performances from the entire cast. I took my 3 daughters ages 15,13 and 8, and THEY understood the point of the story.

Never feel anything but proud, Will Fetters, never. We love the movie and Rob (obvs) and those who don't get, are just stupid.

Kate are you going to the premier tonight? We need video and pics and stories if you are...

OMG...I haven't even read the article yet but had to comment that the photo shown with this link on your website damn near made me cry. I've seen it two times and know where that shot is from. It's the first time I had seen that shot except during the movie.

Cindygal said...

...someone on the spoiler thread yesterday asked if anyone know Will Fetters contacts so she can write a comment about the movie.
I thought that was a good idea, i wish he could visit this blog and read all the powerful comments written by ladies in this blog. Last night at home I read all their comments which is something I dont usually do. I so hope Rob get to read the spoiler thread comments.
All I can say i'm proud of him!!

Kerri said...

Hey girls? Do you think we coud somehow send an email to Will Fetters saying that we loved the movie and to ignore the critics. I think it's worth doing.

Kerri said...

Will Fetters has a twitter account. Lets twitter him!

d67 said...

Yes, I tweeted @willfetters yesterday. He linked to this same article and afterward he also tweeted how he was still very proud of this film and everyone involved with it. And he should be! It was beautifully done with amazing performances by all!

I hate critics, they are so self involved and consider their tastes above everyone elses....I wouldn't be surprised if some studios had a couple in their pockets cause it makes no sense that they could like those Nicholas Sparks movies but not Remember Me!

@Kerri

Thanks for such a tremendous idea! Off to Twitter Mr. F! ☺

I have no idea how to tweet or twitter or whatever, but would love to contact will Fetters, not just to tell him my own personal feelings, but to copy and paste teh comments from teh spoiler threat yesterday. he really ought to see them all, and I think Rob should, as well. If anyone has any idea of Fetter's email, (and Rob's agent's email) please let me know, and if you can twitter or tweet him/them the link to yesterday's Spoiler thread, please do so.
Leaving soon for the St Padraig's day parade; hope to catch you all later!

Will wrote a haunting beautiful script and ITA, it's gets me upset when I hear it described (by media & critics) as a teen romance drama, or rebel without a cause with a twist, or god forbid about about (the date)...

Many don't get it...

Thank God Rob & Allen did....as we got this beauty to experience...

If you have a Twitter, let will know....he appreciates it, and he's grateful to the fans...and the fans aren't wrong...

I don't understand. If someone wrote a script about a man with a loving family who had ups and downs and then in the end he jogs on a beach and a plane crashes and kills him while on that beach - the critics would go nuts! What a bad ending! But you know what, stuff like that happens - it happened in my state yesterday! The movie did for me what it was suppose to do. It seemed to me I was watching someone's actual life story, not just a movie character. There is that old saying, "S**t Happens" and there is a reason people say that! I hope Mr. Fetters doesn't take to heart what movie critics are saying. There are movies that teach you something about yourself and others and there are those that "entertain" - this is a movie that makes you feel. Maybe critics don't like to do that.

Angie said...

I agree with solas. I do not have a Twitter account or I would do it. But, someone should tweet Will F. and link the Spoiler thread to him.

Let him see that so many do actually "get it" !

ShariG said...

I loved this interview. I know what you mean, Kerri, but more critics are beginning to get it, I think, and very few have critical things to say about Rob. Makes you want to punch someone though, doesn't it?

ShariG said...

Tweeting is a great idea, but there is also a comment section on this interview that i would be very surprised if Will Fetters does not read. Many from Robsessed have left wonderful comments there as well.

Great interview! Everyone should read it and see the movie!!! I can't look at that picture with him in the building without crying!!!

WhyIstheRumAlwaysGone said...

I don't know if Kat, Kate and Gozde could do that, but what about gathering all the comments from the spoiler thread - into a sort of collective Remember Me diary or book - and have it sent not only to Will Fetters but also to Allen Coulter, Nick Osbourne and to Rob? There must be a way to do that through Summit or Rob's reps. What do you think? These threads are really exceptional, they're nothing like I've ever seen, even on a such a beautiful blog as Robsessed. Anyone with me?

nellieduff said...

I got it. A lot of people got it. I know that the "professional movie critic" and his/her opinion is important, but I want to ask you Will, have you gone on sites like Fandango and read the exit reviews being given by people who have just seen the movie? I left one myself, as did about 2000 other people, and having scrolled through, I'd say over 90% of them were good. If you look at the spoiler posts on this site too, you'll see that myself and others felt exactly like we should have. I am 41 and was home with my then 6 month old daughter, watching the Today show that day and I left Remember Me remembering the EMOTION. Exactly how I felt on that day. This movie was a love letter to America and to New York and I think that more people realize that than the "professional critic" reviews represent.

Cindygal said...

@Whyistherumalwaysgone, thats sound like a good idea!!

nellieduff said...

@whyistherumalwaysgone. I think that is a great idea. A fabulous idea. There are some beautiful, literate, intelligent and meaningful comments in that thread that I think would mean so much to Will, Allen and everyone else involved in the making of Remember Me!

I don't thionk a tweet is enough for me. I think WE should write a big, apreciation letter. Maybe so Make A Blog or a petition or something, were we could show or love for the movie and also do our own reviews. And them spam the link all aroud the media and dumb critics, so they can see how WE GET IT. I know that there´s a lot of love for the movie around, I´ve see it. I just think we should put all those things together in one big place, specially made for it, just like Remember me Saturday

@WhyIsTheRumAlwaysGone:
Me of course :-) Really great idea, must be done, please!

And I've not yet seen the movie, coz in my country it will be out in 10 days...

But reading many of the comments in the threads was such an enriching and moving experience for me (surprisingly affecting me on a much deeper, more personal level than the simple searching for movie opinions as I intended with the first glances) that I'm glad I finally decided not to remain spoilerfree or I would have lost such a touching immersion into so deep souls and minds.

And knowing all they have been able to arise here Rob, Will and all the cast couldn't be but proud of themselves, of their great job and above all of thier brave choice in doing it, despite all the critics superficial comments.

thanks again Ladies... and Rob, obv :-)
nice afternoon/morning to all!

Do ya'll read reviews before you go to a movie?? I never do. And I'm glad - cause I would have missed some really wonderful movies if I'd listened to them.

All I can hope is that most people don't listen to them because they know critics are assholes and wannabe actors themselves.

Give the man a break............he's young and he's trying so hard to make good movies. And WE love them.

@rpattzgirl - I think it would be a wonderful idea (if all who posted on the spoiler threads agree to it, as there was some pretty personal stuff in there too). It would give more exposure to our comments than my original idea of sending a real diary/book with all the comments put together - or maybe both things could be done?

We have Rob's fan mail address to send things to right here on Robsessed.

The dude that wrote the original review before Will responded to it was right on with his comments and I checked all of his entries and that story of Will's response to the critics had more comments listed on it than ANY other one he had written.

Maybe not everyone loved the movie as much as we did but they sure are talking about it and THAT is success because we are not forgetting what happened and we are not overlooking this film - people are really noticing it, whether they find it to be good or bad it is getting attention - and more attention than any of the others.

AP said...

I do feel for Will. Tough to get this kind of drubbing on your debut, and obviously heart-felt endeavour. I hope he knows that the critical reviews will be forgotten long before the film itself. And I say again the critics were quick to judge but not to assess. In the end, it's the audience response that counts. I hope he remembers all those films that when first released were dismissed, or ignored, but are now regarded as classics, or ahead of their time.

I think the issue of marketing was a difficulty. I can understand from the studio's view why it was promoted as a romantic drama, but the film is a drama, period, and probably should have been an "R" rated one, at that. Still, if that were 'the price' for getting it made, I'd rather have the film than not.

Shout out to the UK fans - your turn to help all involved know how you feel by supporting the premiere and then seeing RM.... :)

Well, I for one, have never seen a more apropos case of, "They just don't get it!" On sooooo many levels. I did not take this movie to be about 9/11, but reather a period piece about loss. I did not see this movie as a romance so much as about love of all kinds, and the loss of those loves. Tyler lost his hero, Michael, and blames his father.

The relationship between Tyler and Caroline was uppermost, then the troubled relationship between Tyler and his father. Tyler's friendship with Aidan was stronger than the one between him and Ally. The interactions between Tyler and Ally was more of a way to contrast the two families who have suffered loss and reacted to it differently. I never saw their relationship as being "the one", but as something they both needed at that time. He wasn't a cad or anything, he just was. He left the "clueless blonde" in his bed when he ran off to Michael's grave, and he was about to pick up the "cowgirls" when he got in the fight. Tyler was not letting anyone but Caroline get close to him. I think Ally kind of showed him a little bit that his father was not completely bad by her realtionship with her father, but he did not want to listen. All reasonable (though not admirable) actions for a 21 year old alienated young man.

Am I the only person who thinks it's about time to start telling other stories besides how heroic everyone was? There were just normal people that were affected by the tragedy, and it was a part of all our lives. I have read comments that it was not realistic for Tyler's father to be out of his office, but why wouldn't he be? He owns his practice and can do what he wants. He may not be particularly affectionate with his daughter, but it makes sense to me that he would react fiercely to anyone else threatening her. My dad is very much that way.

While not a fun movie to watch, it was a powerful one. The sets were gritty and about as realistic as I have seen. No one was portrayed as unrealistically beautiful. It felt very believable to be there, and if I feel like I am there, it is well done. Rob is a fine actor and a risk taker. This was not a chick flick as expected or even a date movie. I had to sit in my car and just breathe for 30 minutes before I could drive home. The women I went with are all taking their husbands to see it this weekend, because they believe the guys will appreciate the film itself, not the hype.

This is Rob's best work yet. I am eagerly waiting for Bel Ami.

WhyIstheRumAlwaysGone said...

@solas - I just had the idea, but I don't know what will be done and by whom!

Marna said...

This is a good interview, but honestly, I'm surprised he thought he could invoke 9/11 & not get a strong negative reaction from some people. It wasn't realistic on his part to think that something so horrific would not still be close to the surface of people's emotions.

Kerri said...

Thats what I love about this site and this fandom. We genuinely care about Rob and his work. But when someone purposely shits on one of his movies because of his popularity, thats when our fandom rears it's ugly head and srikes back.

I want to add here that I am wondering about the categorization of this film. Interviews had Rob saying he came on board as producer to make sure it was marketed properly, but i am now wondering if at least some of the negative reviews were as a result of this being touted as a romance, or romantic drama. Call me weird, but I don't see it as a romance (or romantic drama) at all; it is drama, a drama of relationships. There was so much more going on besides Tyler and Alli's 'romance'. Perhaps it is a drama of a young man learning to find himself in and relate to the world as the world finds and relates to himself.

WhyIstheRumAlwaysGone said...

I agree with you @solas, it was marketed in a rather inadequate way. I saw it advertised as a dark romantic drama, as a dark rom-com (??), as a modern day "Love Story", as a teen romance (wtf?), as a tragic love story, and more things besides, but nothing really seems to fit, I think Rob said that the movie did not belong to any particular genre, but of course this has probably made its marketing difficult as the industry needs a specific category to sell the movie. It's complicated...

I am in on the blog thing, bring it on girls.......

I just email a friend a film writer/director in the CA and ask him about RM, he said he didn't see it because of the critics review so I told him I never let critics detain me from seeing a movie and that another friend of mine in US has seen it and love it......I also sent him the script.....

jessegirl said...

AP: Like what you said about the 'critics were quick to judge but not to assess...".

Kat: "A piece about loss". Didn't Will say something about that too.
From my perspective it is absolutely about loss, grief, the main theme. Tyler's loss is central and those of his significant others revolve around his tortured self.

All: I posted on the comments on ropeofsilicon urging Will, Rob and Allen to read the spoilers on this blog. I'm guessing Will will read at least the comments on that site.

I hope some of the other good ideas you ladies have for spreading the spoilers to Will, Rob and Allen (f..k Summit) work.
I haven't seen such impressive insights and stories, such articulation and good passion in a blog thread. They need to see the best results of what their film did.

Solas, I think this film could not be categorized, and publishers, film distributers are not risk-takers and have no faith that the reading and viewing public will pay for a film which doesn't fall into a neat category, don't you think?

Really creative work of any kind is original and cannot be categorized, hence, it's a nightmare for cookie-cutter marketers to promote. I first heard RM mentioned as this generation's 'Love Story', which it is not.
How dare we suggest that marketers earn their money by being creative themselves!

Cindygal said...

I believe more and more people get what this movie is all about. I was just on the rottentomatoes website and I noted that the RT community rating went from 78% to 80%!

solas said...

OK--I'm not ni advertising, but I thnk it would have gone over a lot better if they had not used the words or even implied romance, but rather called it: A drama of life, love, and loss.

Truth is, the commercials/trailers DID show the other aspects: himself sitting on the train with the Ghandi quote, the street fight, his relationships with his sister and his father. Yet almost everyone was emphasizing or gearing themselves to a romance. Perhaps the eedjuts who felt 'the rug pulled out from under them' at the end felt that way because they had expected merely a romance; if it had been touted as a drama of love, life, and loss, they might have realized there was a bigger picture.

jessegirl said...

Solas, I think you're right, and something about 'life, love, loss' sounds good. How hard could it have been for them to find the words?

Boo Hoo. My comment on the 'rope' site was edited--(you'll all laugh, but I swear my comment was short, not what I do here)--and my reference to the superlative comments ON THIS BLOG was excised. Hence the wonderful things I said about Robsessed were made to seem like they came from the 'rope' comments, which misrepresents my message. Plus, my suggestion to Will to come here was removed.

I will write to the administrator there about it. (Actually the comments there are pretty good, but nothing like what we've all produced here.) It angers me--naive bunny that I am--that they did that.

Maybe I was stupid. We've talked about it here but perhaps we didn't want such a direct link from that webpage to this??? Somehow I thought that was the kind of thing we wanted. Was I wrong? Oh damn, maybe I'll just keep my nose out of it from now on.

Thanks, Solas. I hope it works.
The 'rope' thread is quickly becoming a RM fest, with many people behind the movie 100%.

But the superlative quality and depth of so many people who've commented here remains unsurpassed and I hoped Will and Rob would read them.(Although, my own 'story' makes me feel vulnerable; one time it's good to be anonymous.)
