In the book Georges Duroy is such an ass hole. But its going to be really hard to hate him while looking at that B-E-A-UTIFUL face!

I don't know. This character has absolutely no redeemable qualities - I'm a little scared for Rob. I personally would pay lots of money just to see him open a can of tuna fish for two hours, but this might not be the best career choice. Just saying . . .

I'm dying to read this book but want to watch this movie 'fresh'. Reading the RM script kinda ruined it for me so.. not gonna read it. But these pics are killing me.. so beautiful.

I have read the book and yes the character DuRoy is def a douche but the women around him seems to have left all their common sense behind too...lol. I guess he had to be good in the sack cos these women let him walk all over them like..well like dirt.
I cannot wait to see Rob play this kind of character, it is so totally against who he is and what he's done before..I think this is a SMART career choice! Love Rob's "stuck up face in the last pic..he really does look like a 1890's gentleman there lol

@Sabrerob-I agree about Georges' character--and I have heard Rob say that in the Angela Lansbury movie of this book, they have the character shot at the end of the movie because a man can't be allowed to triumph as such a cad! However, when I finished the book I thought "how are they going to make this play?" I still wonder about that but if anyone can rise above Georges' character it would be Rob. I would like to hear his take on what the just returns should be. I don't think the story is ruined by reading the book. If anything I would feel it would help you to understand things that I can't see them explaining in the film??? It is a very short book-easy read in an afternoon. Did reading the Twilight books ruin the film for any of you? I don't mean artistically but in knowing the story?
@sabrerob I think it IS a smart career choice!!! Bel Ami is a classic novel and again he can show that he can really act! This role is a challenge for any actor.

I just borrowed Bel-Ami from the library yesterday too. The gentleman who helped me seemed impressed by my choice of reading.. I didn't tell him if it wasn't for Mr Pattinson I probably never would've heard about it. Anyway, it's too bad I couldn't find an English copy of the book, and that I suck too much to read it in French, but I'm still looking forward to reading it.

This movie will kill me. He is such an asshole in the book, but I look forward to seeing Rob carry it off. It's a great career choice for him. This is definitely an adult movie, and not just because of the sex scenes.
they'll be using English accent in this movie, rob mentioned in one interview that he has accent coach in this movie coz he can no longer remember his native accent :))
i think it's a good career choice. i admired his boldness and versatility. one thing that will surely makes him stay forever in Hollywood.

Georges Duroy is indeed one despicable character and I'm so looking forward to seeing Rob bringing him to life! I, too, think it's an excellent career choice! :D
One of my dreams was seeing him portray Dorian Gray, but I think Georges is even better (or worse!!!).

I think this movie is a really smart choice on Rob's part, he never goes for the easy and predictable way, and I really respect him for that.
He's gonna be awesome playing Georges, mean characters are always much more interesting, you know you should hate bad boys but could you honestly hate someone looking like that??

Steph--it is totally worth the read. WHen I read it in highschool, most went over my head, especially the implied covert sexuality (even the overt, I thnk) yet underlying it was a comprehendible shocking idea, worth reading. Next I read it (over 30 years later), I understood it quite well, and appreciated it even more.

Rob's acting is great. You can tell George is being such an azzhole to Virginie.
I never thought that I could find my favorite monopoly figure so freaking sexy:) Of course, all it took was Rob in coat tails, top hat, and a cane to make it so!
One of the things I love most in Rob is that he loves reading good literature and with his work as actor he is estimulating more and more people to read too. Now he is Georges Duroy from Bel Ami, a book written by Guy de Maupassant, one of the best french authors of 19th century and soon he will be Jacob from Water for Elephants, another great book.
Changing almost the subject, angry Rob/Duroy is so sexy. Kristin S Thomas is one of my favourite actresses and he does not seem the slightest bit intimidated by working with an actress as experienced as she. Georges Duroy is a lost man who doesn`t know what to do with his own life but Robert Pattinson is a man of strong personality, simple, honest, that knows exactly what he wants and is not willing to do anything for having success.
I am reading the book and confess that I can`t hate Georges. I have pity of him (LOL).
I love Rob as Georges Duroy!!!!! I love Kristin/Virginie begging for his attention!!!

If you have a kindle you can download it from Amazon.com for free or you can download the free program for kindle for your computer and download the book there so you can read it on the computer
To read the book for free, type Google Books in the search box. I then chose Advanced Search (the third choice down on my page of responses), selected Public Domain books, printed in English, and then typed in the title Bel Ami. What came up is a digitized version of an actual library volume of the book. Hope it works for you!
