Leonardo DiCaprio talks comparisons with Robert Pattinson
Here's the part of the interview that mentions Rob:
Leonardo DiCaprio has little to worry about these days, having long gotten over the career bump that was Titanic. Up to that point, the young turk was carving out a career as a beautiful, beguiling character actor. Suddenly, he was a star. His previous outing, Baz Luhrman's Romeo + Juliet lit the fuse, DiCaprio suddenly a pin-up of every young girl's wall. The tragic role of Jack in Titanic was enough for the young Leonardo DiCaprio's career to explode. To the point where the 23-year old actor couldn't step outside his door without the paparazzi photographing his every move. And the world constantly contemplating his next move.
A bit like Robert Pattinson after Twilight broke. Only even more mental.
"I can see it happening with Robert Pattinson, absolutely," laughs DiCaprio, "and it brings back such happy, and crappy, memories. Your life isn't your own when that kind of stardom happens, and you have tabloids every day making up stories about you.
"It's not exactly what an actor dreams of, because your anonymity is gone."
Suddenly, you're Elvis, and that means playing someone else for an audience is nigh on impossible. DiCaprio addressed the issue by playing a variation of himself at that time in Woody Allen's Celebrity, but when he tried to actually act in 1998's The Man In The Iron Mask and 2000's The Beach, audiences just wanted more Jack. Or more Romeo. More Leo.
You can read the rest HERE - it's a good interview. Thanks to Kim for the tip.

The comparison is crazy. I know Rob will come out of this amazingly, just like Leo did. I think it's great that Leo knows it and one would hope that he would be there for Rob, if Rob wanted to talk.
B&W Rob + Leo = AWESOME!
Thanks Kat!
I think the media, especially with internet, is more pervasive and demanding now, so, aside from the fact Rob is better looking, smarter, gives delightful insights into his delightful character for all to see often, it is not really an accurate comparison.
'Minimalist advertising campaign'--Summit, learn from this.
ITA, Solas.
And I'm one of the three people on the planet who didn't like Titanic, sorry, Leo!
There's something so indescribably special about Rob. No comparison! Rob is just absolutely unique!
; )
I just thought Titanic was OK, but nothing special, & I've never been a Leo fan, but I have to say, in that photo, he looks EXTREMELY hot. Very, very young, but hot. LOL
I think the comparison lies in where they are at the age of 23 with highly explosive careers, IMO. I love Leo, loved Titanic and remember the craziness. With the internet and blogs (love you Gozde, Kate and Kat) it is far more intense for Rob, but in recent history, Leo is the only comparison for Rob. Just my thoughts.
I actually thought Leo was good in 'What's eating Gilbert Grape'.
*waves* to Solas, Gwen and Cullenlover. Yah, the internet has become a monster Leo never had to cope with.
And Rob is incomparable.
Gwen--make that 4. :-)
Hi Jesse--i actually responded to your posting on that old thread!
Thanks, Kat. Good interview with Leo and I like what he has to say about his approach to surviving it all - waiting, keeping his head down, and continuing to focus on the work. It's great that Rob was able to do "Bel Ami" at this point, as it's not a 'romantic' film and moves him away from that image. And I don't think they can change the rating on this one, thanks be....
Okay, I am a fan of Rob.
Have to say this though..
Comparing Rob's acting with Leo's is just down right insulting for Leo.
He is an incredible actor, amazing! In what's eating gilbert grape, titanic, romeo + juliet, revolutionary road.
Rob is very average.
I understand some people can't get past their lust with him so they tend to be a bit clouded and think he is just so "omfg incredibly sexxxxxy"
I like him but his acting skills in twilight.. Below average.
New moon? He was better in twilight which isn't saying much.
Leo is a great actor.
Rob has a lot of growing to do.
@gwen...
omg i thought i am the only one who didn't like titanic lol
and yes i think comparison is crazy here two individuals
ROB IS JUST TO GOOD TO BE COMPARED to somebody :)
@ Catherine, i think Rob is being compared to Leo when Leo was at the same age as Rob.
No doubt Leo is a great actor, and yes Rob is still growing, we all start somewhere!!
never fond of the ciggerettes, and never that crazy over leo.
Cindy..
Well if that is the case, there still is no comparison at all.
Anyone is welcome to correct me but I'm pretty sure Leo was 22 when he filmed Titanic and What's eating gilbert grape he did when he was 18/19.
For anyone who hasn't seen it, he plays a disabled boy and his acting in that was fantastic.
Romeo and Juliet was a year before Titanic I think.
I like certain celebrities but knowing if someone is a good actor is easy to pick as there really isn't many.
I dunno--I realize I am not very sophisticated re films and the industry, but I have seen Rob's films, and I have seen Leo, and Rob impresses me way more. The only earlier film I appreciated re Leo's acting was Gangs of New York.
To me, even in the acting category, there is no comparison as Rob is already acting far better at his age.
Solas,
Thanks for the response on old thread. Really good. I may have responded again, but there was little to be said after your great last words.
xCatherinex,
Hmmm.
I mentioned I liked Leo in Gilbert Grape. However, I think critics put too much store in roles about abnormal or 'challenged' people.
Al Pacino, one of the greates actors, didn't get an Oscar for so many films, not until he played a blind man. There are so many examples of this if one cares to look.
However, I think, playing Edward is a great challenge and I really think even many Twihards don't realize what a great job Rob did in that first film.
I think playing heroes, really heroic individuals, is a difficult job for actors. I mean heroes who don't have a 'disability' and are not part of a minority or whose characters don't have a blatant social message, esp. a politically correct one (flavour of the year).
Oh in any good film there's always a message but many of the ones I'm referring to are too didactic and the actors winning Oscars and accolades for them have done better work elsewhere.
Characters like those in 'Ordinary People' are so complex and human and magnificent and I know Rob can and will present us with performances equal to those.
Why? Because he CAN act, damn it, and also because he has both the insight and sensitivity great roles demand. Without that, acting skills are worthless.
Apropos of nothing, so many actors always say they like playing villians, there's more range or fun there. But I think a villian, unless s/he is complex, is far the easier acting job. Villians are easier to portray.
I think one of the reasons Heath Ledger's Joker was so good was because he turned him into a complex, layered villian.
I mean 'villains'.
Got it, Jess, and ITA.
@ solas
"To me, even in the acting category, there is no comparison as Rob is already acting far better at his age."
You have got to be kidding me, that is just laughable.
Rob is not a good actor, he's not.. Again, this just proves people can't get past their lust with him.
No matter who the person was who got the role of Edward Cullen, they were going to be massive.
Girls all over the world are obsessed with the idea of a guy like Edward so the person who played him was going to hit it big.
There's good looking guys and girls in hollywood, some happen to be gifted actors/actresses, others not.
Jessica Alba is beautiful but a horrible actress.
Same goes for Cameron Diaz, she is woeful.
Some are lucky they get the roles they do.
"I realize I am not very sophisticated re films and the industry"
I wouldn't use the word sophisticated in there, I would say something more along the lines of educated.
@ jessegirl
"I really think even many Twihards don't realize what a great job Rob did in that first film."
Laughable again.
You know, I have watched quite a few movies in my time and there hasn't been many movies that I have sat through and thought to myself the whole movie, "the acting in this is just shit"..
Twilight made that category.
The acting was shockingly bad, by everyone in the film.
Kristen Stewart was cringeworthy, Rob was wooden and not the slightest bit believable.
You could tell the movie was being acted, as though they were reading from a script, it DID no come naturally.
When you watch a movie, you shouldn't be able to tell that the person is acting..
It was bloody awful. I went with 5 friends to see Twilight and it wasn't just me, people were laughing on the parts that were meant to be serious.
Tweens can't get past how sexy they think Rob is, that's all that runs through their minds.
I think I lost a few brain cells listening to the girls comments behind me while watching that movie.
I like Rob, wasn't a fan of him after watching the twilight movie.
I became a fan of him after finding out he plays the guitar and sings as I play in a band myself at home.
Saw his interviews and he came off as really down to earth and sweet.
I like english guys too.
My ex boyfriend was english and sang too so I don't know, I think I have a weak spot for boys like that.
But..
I'm not going to blow smoke up his ass with the acting cause it's just not there.
I like him but his acting stinks.
