Words of Wisdom From Ethan Hawke To Robert Pattinson
From NY Magazine:
Over drinks at a bistro in the Maritime Hotel, however, we’re not talking about Stoppard or Shepard or Mendes or Lumet. We’re talking about Zac Efron. Hawke and Linklater are close friends, and Linklater’s latest film, Me and Orson Welles, released in November, stars the unknown British actor Christian McKay as Welles, and the very well-known Efron—who became famous in High School Musical—as Welles’s young protégé. And herein lies a dilemma.
“The irony is, from Rick’s point of view, he wants to make a period film. He wants McKay to play Orson Welles. So you need a star to be in it somewhere,” Hawke says. “Here’s the answer: We’ll get Zac Efron to play the young kid. Because they audition him, and you know what? He turns out to be a really good actor. So that’s the reason Rick gets the money to make the film. But that’s also the reason people struggle to take the movie seriously.” This is a predicament that Hawke knows all too well. “A part of my heart goes out for these guys like Zac or [Twilight’s] Bob Pattinson. I wish them well,” he says. “The world is very mysterious. It has the appearance that it’s rooting for them and giving them everything they want. Instead, it’s setting a huge trap. And it’s very difficult to get out of.” (Gozde: Okay first off: Bob? Really? I guess it's okay, they call Robert DeNiro Bob as well but Rob is so NOT a Bob :)) As for the "trap": He's right. That's why Rob is nominated for a Razzie. But you know what there was a time Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt were just 2 "pretty boys". With a good road map and brains they can get out of the pigeon hole they were pushed in and hopefully we'll be there to document it :))
Thanks to CyberMelli for the tip :)

Wow! I think Ethan's take on this is right. Always hard to break out of the mold people want to keep you in. But, Rob is going to come out like gangbusters this year! Besides, he's already shown his acting chops in films to date. Although we all loved Rob as EC, he's not gonna just be labeled 'the guy from Twilight'.
And that's my biggest concern when it comes to him! He's too good for that world. so innocent, an easy target, I really hope he's got brains, and I think he does! That world corrupts people, and I hope he'll stay true to himself, I believe he had a good upbringing, and because of that I hope.
@Fae I totally I agree with you!
lol~Actually, when I first read the post I thought Ethan's advice would include tips on Uma!!!
@jC me too.
I like Ethan. From dead poets to thrillers and love stories, I really liked what I have seen. I saw him last summer at the theater he was amazing.
I don't worry about Rob,from what I have seen of him so far, he will be just fine.
@dina
I like EH as well. Agree Rob will be fine. I am just so anxious for the reviews of RM. This movie will be so pivotal for Rob. He's such a great actor and seems to always see the vision of his characters so well. But, critics are so damn fickle and of course have their pets. I'm hoping they will like the movie and Rob's portrayal. I just pray to God that if critics aren't happy with the movie's storyline, they still credit Rob with his acting. They tend to beat up on popular figures.
On a positive note, we know Rob will nail this too!
@jc Same here, the only thing that worries me is the reviews on remember me. I don't care if they don't like the movie, the cast, the music, the direction as long as they like him. That's all it matters to me now. He needs some good reviews, that's all he needs now.
Kristen got fab reviews on her films, and I think he deserves them more than anyone else.
Please God let them be good.
Those of us that have been around more than a teens amount of years know about that trap, how fickle Hollywood is and how fickle the viewing public is as well. But Rob has the advantage of a HUGE fan base right now that keeps him up there in a highly marketable way. I believe he is intelligent enough to recognize that and to use this tool for his benefit. In being able to pick and choose what project he will do next, he can show everyone else what his true talent, skill and art is until they too will recognize and give him the credit he deserves. I was not drawn to him b/c he played a beloved character in a favorite book series. I am drawn to him b/c he blew me away with his ability to play his part, the subtle emotions that he shows, the full immersion into his character. He is definitely easy on the eyes, to say the least, but it was his talent that drew me in to begin with and he continues to delight me with each project that I have had the pleasure to view. No matter how bad the movie, his acting stands out and I am a sucker for natural-born talent. Use your position wisely, Rob, and your career will continue to sky rocket. I will be here on the side lines anxiously awaiting your every project.
I think at this point, Rob aka "Bob" is taken far more seriously than Zac Efron.... After all, he's never danced while dribbling a basketball..er...that we've seen on film anyway..
LOL "danced while dribbling a basketball"!!!! Thank God he didn't! :))))))) And he wouldn't! I mean, just imagine that scene! :D
Well said, Mamamary.
I think what is important is Rob is aware of this. He knows now that Twilight is a money maker francise, he knows that he has to seperate himself from it with his other movie choices which, from what I have seen and read,.. he is. It's just time...that's all.. he's only 23 almost 24.... I know he will be around as long as he wants too... that's the difference.. He is willing to take risks.. he was willing to to that before twilight came out.. as evidence by his role as Dali...
It's up to us, HIS fans, to make sure we support him ... It's fine and great to have our fun.. the man is fine and fun to look at.. but in the end of the day he's trying to make a life and a name for himself... we can help him do that, by supporting him in his films. If we believe in his talent then we go and see his movies and support him.
How the hell did this soap box get under me... crap... (stepping down)
I think Rob will do just fine once he moves away from the Twilight franchise. I think as long as he is given the chance he will prove he is a good actor.
Although I enjoy EH's acting, especially in Great Expectations, I think he sounds a little bitter here.
Just the fact that he calls Rob "Bob" sounds a little demeaning and ignorant. Does he not know what name he goes by?
IMO, EH is a good actor and could have gone a lot further in his career if he weren't such a stoner.
Not that I have anything against personal choices in that regard as long as they don't get in the way of your career.
I think he's kind of jealous of the possible future Zac and especially Rob have. A future he could have made the best of and has squandered.
I know what he means though. We are a society that loves to build you up and then when you think you are at the top and have it all we love to tear you down. I look at this Razzie thing right now. Rob and Kristen are on one page saying they have the best on screen kiss of the decade and then on another page they are nominated for the worst couple of 2009. It makes no sense. I think Ethan has experienced that a bit, although not at the level that either Zac Efron or Rob Pattinson have. So far the media has been pretty nice to Zac.
I really think rob's unique personality will win to all the mdia frenzy like now!!everybody has something to say about rob....good or bad
aaaa I remeber I was inlove with EH after watching great expectations.,....aaaa such a beautifu movie
