Robert Pattinson's "Remember Me" Is A Notable Film of 2010

According to Dark Horizons:

Remember Me
Opens: March 12th 2010
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Emilie de Ravin, Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper, Lena Olin
Director: Allen Coulter

Summary: A rebellious young man in New York City has a strained relationship with his father ever since tragedy separated their family. A twist of fate bring him in contact with a young woman whose spirit unexpectedly heals and inspires him.

Analysis: Girl #1: "OMG did you hear? Edward, I mean Robert Pattinson, has a new movie"
Girl #2: "Seriously? God he's so hot. You mean it's not the next Twilight?"
Girl #1: "Uh-uh, its like a love story"
Girl #2: "It's not that Spanish gay sh*t again, that stuff was gross"
Girl #1: "Nah, it's him and that Aussie girl from 'Lost' and they totally make out, she's such a lucky cow"
Girl #2: "Bitch, doesn't she know he's mine. I'm so there, text me the details" (Kate: Hey there little girl get in the bloody queue, thanks!)

We're still very much in the eye of the storm when it comes to Robert Pattinson. The scruffy, unassuming 23-year-old Brit didn't really ask for the media storm and fangirl craze surrounding him, but he has it anyway. The one good thing about it is that he can use it to push non-"Twilight" films of his that would otherwise go unnoticed at the box-office.

Whether he has the goods to become a strong actor however remains in question as his performances in the likes of "Little Ashes" and the "Twilight" films haven't met with acclaim. The former however was a far too ambitious role beyond his depth as yet, the latter is a character with an admittedly limited range of playability. 'Remember' at last gives us a vehicle that seems suitable for him and could crossover into "A Walk to Remember" or "The Notebook" style sleeper hit. (Kate: Oh God how am I gonna make it through this movie)

He's also got some strong support on hand with a screenplay by "Rachel Getting Married" scribe Jenny Lumet, and direction from TV directing great Allen Coulter ("Hollywoodland," "Rome," "The Sopranos"). Should Lumet's script keep the genuine and raw emotional power of 'Rachel', combined with the impressive supporting cast on offer, we should have good drama. Will Pattinson fit comfortably into that or be the weak link in the chain along the lines of Zac Efron in "Me and Orson Welles" or Ben Affleck in "The Sum of All Fears"?

Wow, I wonder how much flack this publication will get with the inappropriate, offensive, and intolerant "gay love being gross" comment.

Women, astute, discerning, sexy, intelligent, and awesome themselves, the world over, are attracted to Rob Pattinson for more reasons than his obvious good looks and sex appeal. What we see in him is easily translated onto the big screen. We already know he's an incredible actor. We don't need critics to analyze things to the nth degree to know he'll blow the socks off his competition.

Will he be deemed an actor with breadth and depth by critics eventually? Absolutely yes when critics finally catch up to understanding what Rob's fan base already has learned about his abilities. They are legion.

No shit Suz...

WTF is wrong with people?

This was tying to be a back handed compliment about the movie... but was quite insulting.

Gross my ass!

Little Ashes is in my top 5 fav movie list. Among a Hitchcock, a Woody Allen, a Louis Malle and a Claude Lelouch movie.

But, yep! Sure Remember Me will be a killer. C'mon, look at that man!!! What a way to go...mmm...

according to @Barbara on this point:

I particularly do not need to show me that Rob is a great actor and has shown in How to Be, Little Ashe and Haunted Airman although HA was not a great movie rob's performance surprised me was excellent...

I am not twilight fan ... I only see the films Twilight by Robert Pattinson... sorry but true

i like the books Twilight are best films. The film New Moon i like not

Anxiously waiting for the movie Remember me...

I think Remember Me could be Rob's break through performance with the critics.
Unfortunately many critics don't hit the mark as to what will be popular with the public.
So I take very little of what they say to heart, sometimes I think they are paid to be nasty and negative!
After all its the box office that proves how popular a movie is and not the critics.

I believe Rob to be a very talented actor, and I think over the next year we will see just how talented he really is!

RPLover said...

I can't explain how many times I've seen a movie that the critics just raved over and thought it was the worst piece of crap ever. and how many movies I've seen that the critics completely bashed and I thought was wonderful.

{shrugs}

but ITA, that comment was out of line! and Rob is NO ONE'S weak link-just sayin'.

Gemgirl65 said...

ITA Suz. Unreal, the stuff you still hear in this day and age.

It surprises me when I hear comments wondering if he'll be "the weakest link" in a drama, but then I have to remind myself that most people haven't seen any of his work outside of the Twi-films. I wouldn't be interested in him if he weren't talented. He's a great actor, and that's part of the appeal for me. If he were just a pretty face, I wouldn't give a crap.

Ah well, time will tell that tale! I just hope people give him a chance instead of pre-judging because they're sick of the Twi-hype.

All the so called pretty boy actors started out in less than critically acclaimed movies. Most are now the highest paid in Hollywood.

Critics and the media need to learn from their mistakes. Shut up and give the man a chance. He has a very small acting history. He shows growth with each role. In a couple of years he will be on everyone's most wanted list for roles. Not for the fan base he carries with him, but for his talent.

At least Rob is trying different types of roles. He does not want to do cheesy, vulgar movies. Thank god, because I don't want to watch them either.

LeslieHeartsRob said...

ITA with all of you! I think that the critics forget that most movie goers are at the movies for entertainment...they forget that they`re supposed to watch the movie, not analyize every little detail. Some times when you are so fixated on smaller things you miss the goodness of the movie as a whole.

IMO critics seem to go out of their way to NOT give positive reviews to actors like Rob, who have such a vast fanbase. Almost like they want to knock it down a notch purposefully--then gloat with their almighty power. Hopefully, Rob's reviews for RM will reflect those talents that we already so admire in him.
Rob will be in many more notable films and you can take that to the bank.

@Wen-I think that most of the time critics don't hit the mark.

Always the same doubts about Rob`s talent. What about the talent of the person who wrote the "article" for Dark Horizon?

Rob is one of the best actors of his generation. I love his Salvador DalĂ in Little Ashes and I know I will love Tyler Roth in Remember Me.

I think Remember Me is Rob's first chance to shine outside the Twilight movies. Actually I am anticipating RM more than Eclipse because of the powerful story. I read the script a few months ago and it was amazing. He'll be able to show much more depth with his character in RM than as Edward. Maybe RM will be his stepping stone to greater recognition as a truly talented actor.

@ADM: Agree with your "pretty boy" comment about early roles. Trouble is, Rob has a a ton of charisma, like some others, which is why its often hard to be objective about ‘talent’ or even assess it. Charm is distrusted because it is so seductive. As we know. Lol I think it may take quite a while for him to get the ‘right’ project that will enable critics or others to see him in a different light. I’m not sure that Remember Me will be it, particularly since its sandwiched between Saga releases. His part in Captives doesn’t have a wide enough range, at least on paper. Bel Ami offers more scope. It may also be he will have to find his ‘mentor’ director as Burton, Redford and Scorsese have been for Depp, Pitt and DiCaprio. Its a relationship has worked for many others who moved from being considered ‘lightweight’ to an actor with gravitas. At least this franchise has happened early in Rob’s career so he will be able to move beyond and hopefully not squander his opportunities, as some others have done. He seems to have enough sense of self and reality to make good choices.

@LHR, ADM -ITA

@A-yes, I think Rob does have the insight to make good choices. He'll still be around showcasing his talents long after I'm gone, dammit!!!! That would be a trip to see him when he's 50 years old!!

@ jc:
Oh, girl, when he is 50 I'll be... ooooh, no! Probably in the cemetery already...

@JC: Well, by then he may have become a recluse with a permanent beard. I keep seeing Joaquin....No. Won't go there. Better strutting his stuff on stage as a roller. ;)

Also noticed the slagging by Horizons in its article, although I think it's more at fans than LA. More misogynistic than homophobic if you will, and as if that's any better...

jc(britlover) said...

@crazy vamp
lmfao. I don't want to go, either. Maybe I'll look into cryonics!!! Seeing Rob at 50 would be worth it.

Maybe he would agree to 'take care of lil me'... *grin*

Those snobby clueless people who write articles like this always get on my nerves. It's like they don't want to give Robert his due because he became famous in a movie that appeals to women.

And I have noticed that they try to put Twilight in the same category as those stupid CGI/comic book movies. However Twilight is a romance, so it's basis is storyline and character developement and not fake computer action sequences. So it is different from those types of movies.

And I LOVE Edward, he is a very complicated character, and Robert plays him perfectly. Yes I know that he will never get his dues from those types of people, they will never appreciate how well he plays Edward, even though he has nothing from real life to draw from when it comes to some of Edward's baggage. Anyways he doesn't need them, the fans are what matter and he has a lot of fans.

And I am really looking forward to Remember Me, I hope it will turn out very good, it looks great from the trailer and Robert looks great in it.

@crazyvamp: You're fine with 'stamping.' Stomping implies a more violent action. You're english is very good...I don't think I would have realised there was a difference between stamping and stomping in any other language. :)

I haven't had the chance to see Little Ashes yet but let me say from watching the trailer, I think Rob is amazing in it, especially considering his limited experience at that point. And the love scenes I've seen parts of were hot, just sayin'...Yeah, I agree, the "gay" comment was just totally out of line & rude. A little sensitivity, people? Rob will prove himself to the critics, just give him time. Not that I give a damn about critics opinions, I usually disagree anyway. His range always astonishes me considering his youth & relative newness in the business. He has a passion for his characters & his work that will pay off big time for him in the future. I can't wait for RM...I read the script & think I'm looking forward to it more than Eclipse actually. Can't wait to see what roles he chooses next!

LeslieHeartsRob said...

Not a problem...cause I have a feeling if I didn`t...you`d all haunt me!!

Just realised my English is not good. Meant 'your english' not 'you are english.' And I hate it when people do that particular mix-up. Will spend some time in self-loathing expiation and reading more "Don't Cry" by Mary Gaitskill - which is highly suitable...

Zac Efron received a decent review in Orson Welles from the NY Times, who, imo, hates on everyone. Rob has tremendous talent but the way he's being marketed is a concern. He will have to overcome the stigma of being "just another pretty face". It's a blessing and a curse. Great fame from magazine shoots, etc. but being taken seriously as an actor not so much. He needs to gain a male fanbase and judging by the trailer and the poster that's out there, Remember Me is a long shot to do that. The poster looks like a romantic comedy which I know it is not. My husband already told me he's not going to see a Rob "Patterson" chick flick. Rob seems like a brillant guy, he'll figure it out. I could actually see him leaning more toward music or writing in the future.

Shani said...

I saw LA and Rob took on a very complicated role. He did a good job for someone that was so young and not that experienced.

R M had a great script. It's filled with drama, laughs, and something I can't say. But this movie will show Rob's range like no other.

I believe in our boy. Those critics do at times hype up a film. And then you watch it and think...THIS MESS??? :|

jc(britlover) said...

Will work on banner, for sure. I think I have enough time left to think of something highly appropriate to our NB station in life. lol
