Hope For Haiti - MTV talks Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson Speaks At 'Hope For Haiti Now' Telethon: Use Technology To Help Haiti Crisis

It's been just a little over a week since a massive earthquake devastated the Caribbean Island of Haiti, leveling buildings and capturing countless citizens underneath the rubble.

While aid efforts for Haiti began shortly after the earthquake, tonight, some of Hollywood's biggest stars got together to bring further awareness to the cause. Amonst them was "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson, who stressed the importance of technology during this crisis.

Robert, who appeared on camera from London, shared the story of a girl in Haiti who had been buried under a flattened university for nearly six days, praying that someone would find her. Finally, on the sixth day, rescuers discovered her because of a text message sent from underneath the rubble.

Amazing.

The story was just one example of how technology, including Twitter, Facebook and texting, has shaped the response to the earthquake in Haiti.

Here is his speech in full:

"Underneath a flattened university, Maxine Fallon waited. She was crouched in a fetal position and could barely move. In the darkness and during the hectic sounds of the day, through the pain, the hunger and thrist, she prayed that someone would find her. And on the sixth day her prayers were answered, she was found because of a text message from the rubble sent rescuers to her side. Unlike any other event in history, our world has been connected to this tragedy because of technology. Twitter updates, Facebook pages with pictures of the missing and text messages for help. This technology is working right now to connect us, too. At hopeforhaitinow.org, you can donate and you can instantly interact with people in Haiti and anywhere in the globe. Join with those watching and see what they're saying about something we all care deeply about — helping the Haitian people get back on their feet. Please go to hopeforhaitinow.org. Thank you."

Robert of course, was just one of the "Twilight" stars to participate in the benefit to help Haiti. Across the pond in L.A, his "New Moon" costars Taylor Lautner and Anna Kendrick answered calls from people interested in making a donation.

  21. Interesting fact:

Shore wrote the theme song for Late Night with Conan O'Brien. The theme was carried over to The Tonight Show when O'Brien succeeded Jay Leno as host.

  25. I'm just watching this now. Does it look to anybody else that Rob's lip is cut or something? Almost the middle of his upper lip looks very red to me. I'm also surprised how much stronger his accent is, I wonder if he just naturally pulls back on it when he's in other countries, or if it was really changing from being away from home for so long.

  49. I want to thank everyone that has donated to this cause...I'm from Dominican Republic and i have friends in Haiti and my moms boyfriends is also Haitian...most of them are now homeless and most of them have lost family members, its uplifting to see how people have united worldwide in compassion and are trying to help the haitian people.....this people have lived in porverty all of their lifes, and even in the worst situations they still maintain their happiness and warmth and they have this amazing live energy....
However in all of this greatness there are still some sour points...Last night and even today some people tuned in just to see Rob and some were actually so superficial that his looks etc took more importance ..to this people i say, you are heartless....yes we are Rob fans, and I for one I'm very grateful he and all of those other celebrities took the time to lend a hand and do this, this is not the time to be concentrating on trivial silly things as his beard, his shoes etc.....i get it that there is freedom of speech, but some people should really think before they speak/type.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @ annie: no, we did not break any records for comments, yet! I think some threads had over a thousand when some of the 'oldies' were still here every night.

People should really care less about the beird or shoes etc. and wish that there are more people like Rob. The world is suffering every day.
Today is very sad day for me, my friend lost her baby and she's so young...
I came here every day to find some comfort, and this guy, and you girls make me laugh when I'm down.

  55. This was a really moving occasion, and it was wonderful to hear the stories of people contributing, from the heart, especially those talking about going to volunteer in Haiti. Wonderful music, too, and I hope they raised a bundle.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hey AP - ITA. The music blew me away. The stories of survival knocked me off my feet, especially the children. Even if all viewers gave $5 it will be an enormous help to the people of Haiti.

  57. Amen, Dilia.

And Fae, sending a caring hug your way.

  62. @Cullenlover7: Yes, absolutely. Amazing and inspiring stories of survival, and the stories and pics of loss were gutwrenching. The kids made me think not only of Haiti, but all those who live in terrible circumstances around the world. I'll be sending out a lot of $5's to the Aid organizations. I'll just keep a little for the New Moon dvd. :)

  63. @AP - Save some pennies for the NM DVD, especially since we are going to have to order them from all kinds of countries to get the extras we want. We should start a fund.
