Chris Cooper: Robert Pattinson Was Under a Lot of Pressure in Remember Me
From MTV.com:
With Sundance still in full swing, MTV got a chance to catch up with actor Chris Cooper in Park City and ask him about what is sure to be one of the bigger movies of the year: "Remember Me." Though the film isn't at the film festival, Chris had a few things to share about working with Robert Pattinson.
"We put up barricades 90 feet from the scene, and the people and paparazzi just didn't care," Chris said about the people who would swarm to watch scenes with Rob being filmed. "Robert was really under the gun, under a lot of pressure, and I know he's kind of learning to deal with it. And it's a lot to deal with."
Chris attributed "instant messaging" (the older generation's all encompassing term for text messaging, Facebook, and Twitter) for the amounts of people who would flock to the "Remember Me" set when they shot outdoor scenes. He said having NYU's campus nearby meant a lot of young female fans came to the set for a chance to see RPattz.
"He was doing scenes with a crowd of people 30 feet away from him and the paparazzi would not stop clicking the camera and there was a couple of hot, heated periods with the director [Allen Coulter] with that kind of intrusion," Chris said. "I know at his age, no way I could have handled it."
Coming from an Academy Award-winning actor, that says a lot. But Chris came into his own in Hollywood at a much later age than Rob did, and we wouldn't quite classify him as a young heartthrob, so when he makes comments like, "I think this is all kind of new to Robert," we think he might be talking more about himself than the man who has worked publicity for two "Twilight" movies.
Thanks to RobPattzNews :)
I love Chris. Poor Rob. That must have been hard to work under those conditions!
ReplyDeleteI am so addicted to Robert Pattinson! There is something about him that draws me to him. I love when he looks haggard as he says. I love the beard. I thinks he's a mystery and I love that. He is super sexy and his voice is amazing.

ReplyDeleteFILTM!!!
I am so addicted to Robert Pattinson. I love that he is a mystery. There is something that draws me to him. I love that haggard look as he calls it. I love his beard and his eyes. Robert's voice is amazing. People scream for Edward Cullen, I scream for Robert Pattinson. So wish that I could me him.
ReplyDeleteWhat he says about the director worries me. I hope the director did not blame or yell at Rob for the disturbed disturbing 'fans.'
ReplyDeleteNo Solas that's not what he meant. There's a youtube video somewhere of the director yelling at the Paps for ruining a scene they were shooting outside. I think that's what he was talking about.
ReplyDeleteyes it should be hard for Rob I mean trying to work while people were screaming for you I wish we could met him but not in a crowd
ReplyDeleteyes solas teri is right he means how much it is hard to work while pople were doing this
ReplyDeleteExactly, Solas! Was wondering that too. Or just imagine Rob being yelled at in front of a crowd, ugh! Hope that was NOT it. Maybe the director was yelling at the crowd?
ReplyDeleteAlso, CC saying things like this sound like a forewarning for bad reviews. An excuse of sorts. Ditto on the Hope Not... ; ) Want this movie to do really well and stifle those doubters of Rob!
Chris Cooper is such a great actor. Love him.
ReplyDeleteI do think it's new to Robert in the sense, things were sorta reaching a boil by the end of New Moon shooting, and NYC ended up being just hellacious for him in terms of the crowds and the distractions and Robert feeling responsible for those distractions for his coworkers. Someone in another interview mentioned this--that Robert felt very responsible for the circus and how it affected the process of filming.
While NYC was good for us with daily pictures, it was not necessarily good for Robert and the responsiblity it laid on his shoulders for fans not respecting the filming of the movie.
Teri, thanks for clearing that up! ; )
ReplyDeleteJeez, you would think the paps would know better!
sola-no the director was said to be squarely mad at the crowds gathering and their lack of respect towards the process of the filming.
ReplyDeleteRobert was not blamed, but from other interviews I've read, Robert definitely blamed himself in a way and felt very bad for the circus he inadvertantly brought along.
Prior to the filming of RM, he had always raved about the fact he never got noticed in NYC, that people didn't care there. So I think he was a bit shocked at how differently things were by that summer.
OK thanks all-- glad the director was yelling at the papz and not at Rob, but I do remember that Rob felt badly about the disruptions, and felt responsible.
ReplyDeletegwen-no the director was mainly yelling at the paps, but the crowd was not much better. Robert mentioned in an interview how that summer(NYC he meant) was where he started to learn how to walk with his head down. :(
ReplyDeletebeyonce, that freaking sucks! Poor Rob. Obviously during filming, it's not the place and time---fangirls need to RESPECT the work! And Rob.
ReplyDelete; )
Been on sets with both Willis and Duchovny---never made a peep. Hell, was almost afraid to even breathe...
@Karina - ITA. Can't imagine trying to work and create some pretty dramatic scenes and have stupid paps and screaming girls in your sight line and ear shot. I really don't knowq how he made through last year. So much for a 23-year old to handle. Glad he's working in London, at least he has the comfort of home, family & friends.
ReplyDeleteHey Ladies Wide Awake just updated.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Rob had a pretty horrendous time making Remember Me in New York because of the photographers harrassing him, and the fans never leaving him alone. He couldn't even get a meal at night without fans hunting him down. Also I think I remember hearing that Emily was given a hard time by Rob's fans because she wasn't Kristen!
ReplyDeletePlease, please, please, can we all leave Rob to get on with his work while he's filming in Budapest? Don't follow or hassle him, and give him some peace. Hopefully he'll have his body guards with him too.
If you make his life a misery you might just feel bad if he decides to give up acting and disappear from our view permanently.
Good luck Rob, your fans wish you every success with Bel Ami and all your future projects.
Girls no one is has this kind of respect like us! haha! poor Rob! :(
ReplyDeleteFILTM!
Sorry I'm way out of the topic, but I goota mention him here
Tose Proeski January 25 1981.-October 16 2007.
Thank you for the music
Ok now I can go on!
Gotta go for a drink, or two, or three ;)! If I come back as a tipsy NB, please don't blame me! :D
See ya!
@Gwen - Um, Mulder??? For real. I am in fangirl heaven today. First Rob/Twilight, then Legalos/LOTR and now you mention my beloved David Duchovny/X-files (no matter what you think about his personal life, I heart him) and I think I just might die today. Do you have any details you can share?
ReplyDeletegwen you are right they should respect I am trying to understand but cant they be more calm I mean they can talk with him without disturb with shouthing
ReplyDeleteteri whats wide awake
ReplyDeletecullanlover he said that its so hard to concentrate in that situation poor rob its like he has no place to breathe
ReplyDeleteWide Awake is a fanfiction story that roped me into reading fan fiction religously.
ReplyDeleteI got an email that it updated but it looks like the author is censoring some stuff and cleaning up the story today. So it wasn't a legit update.
Wait, what? Wide Awake updated? I thought it was done?
ReplyDeleteoh,ok. freaked me out for a minute. LOL
ReplyDeleteteri ok I got it I will read a fanfic but I couldnt start is this one good someone told me I should write a fanfic too when I talked about my dream
ReplyDeleteI think that in spite of all the pressure surrounding the filming of Remember me, he is gonna be great on it!!!
ReplyDeleteCL, oh, Gwen has details! ; ) Gwen's a former X-Phile (lived and breathed XF for years! Have xfff on Gossamer---email me if interested).
ReplyDeleteBack in the day when XF left Vancouver and moved to LA, well, imagine Gwen's surprise to find them filming, literally, in her backyard. She and BFF go watch a night shoot and long story short, Hubs gets a job as an extra on a couple of episodes (Dreamland I and II, S6) because he'd done extra work for Armageddon.
DD, not really that tall. GA? Very short and seriously pretty. Being a serious XF fan---well, there aren't words to describe the experience. Then or even now. Priceless! ; )
Gawd! Teri, I was freaking out. I thought she somehow extended the story after the epi. Phew.
ReplyDeleteRemember Me rated PG-13 ladies. Darn it.
ReplyDeleteFILTM
nanc can you give the link
ReplyDelete"Remember Me" trailer & few photos are out, premiere is March 12, but other than that no big promotion around, too bad...
ReplyDeleteRob promotion always!
God I adore Chris Cooper... He is right up there with Jack in my eyes...
ReplyDeleteThe Papz intrusion was the worst & they had to keep yelling at them over & over no flashes& they just wouldn't listen...
Alan knew it was not Robs fault... Rob looked so stressed in between shots & I'm sure it was related to the constant intrusions & pappz.
He always made time for the fans though...
Can't wait!
I do hope that so-called fans have learned something from this poor lad's misery, and that wherever and whenever he is filming, no one twits about where he is, no on elets the papz in on his schedule and meanderings, and no one bothers him.
ReplyDeletei just hope that with all the craziness Rob managed to do a good work (i.e. act) Because everyone want to see if he can indeed "act" even the haters.
ReplyDeleteI love Rob
Robert Pattinson can act! I wish people would stop saying "they want to see if he can act"! He can act! Only the haters and critics can't see this! Rob has two fine performances in "Little Ashes" and "How to Be" which I can't get enough of!He was good in "Twilight", "Vanity Fair"(although the scene was cut) and "Harry Potter"! Even if "Remember Me" doesn't blow the critics minds, I'm sure
ReplyDeletehe will be fine in it! I will still go see his movies because I like his style of acting and the way he picks the movies he choses to do!
He is such a sweetheart..I've always loved him and his work :)
ReplyDeleteHell Kemberly, you are pushin it with that avi! How am I supposed to read what you write now girl?@!
ReplyDeleteChris Cooper is a king and I'm sure he helped Rob up his game, despite the papzz and rabid fangirls. NYC was Rob's baptism by fire... I bet he came out of it dazzling hot as ever. Is it March yet?
Difficult for all of them, especially with the paps. I admire Chris a lot. I think the article disses him - he's had to handle far more tough things in life than media pressure, and it's good of him to empathize with Rob's situation.
ReplyDeleteUnbound Captives: it has been pushed back a little - more news in February. Well, I was told they were scouting, but I'll believe it when I see cameras rolling at this rate...lol In the meantime - not back at the ranch - I guess its rehearsal, rehearsal, rehearsal. I wonder if DD's using those 'exercises?' Like to be in that room, too. :)
Rob, NB's are here to serve and protect as well as obsess. We are experts in handling pressure. You need to hire us as your bodyguards. We would throw some whoopass on those screamin' mimi teens! They'd never get through our barricade!!!!
ReplyDeleteCall me........
I love Cris Cooper ... I'm glad that Rob works with professional people ...
ReplyDelete@ Gorob: I agree
Rob does not have to prove that the acts already has done ...
Remember Me be a great film for Rob and whatever happens as I continue to support all their projects ...
I love Rob
Chris Cooper, anyone who has worked with Rob, even the casual observer have all said the same thing.. "Rob is dealing with an phenomenal amount of pressure quite well for someone his age, new to the scene, etc..."
ReplyDeleteHe must be made of some pretty strong stuff, because I'm amazed as well. I hope he'll always be able to do so.
That was nice of Chris to paint a picture of how difficult it was for Rob filming Remember Me. It had to be weird for all of them, but it was all focused on Rob. No wonder he is taking refuge in London with his family. I wish the photographers would get it in perspective so that he wouldn't have to be reclusive to survive. I'll bet he would like to have celebrated Kristen's successes at Sundance, but it would have caused such a stir that she would have been lost and it is her time to shine.
ReplyDeleteI think the heated conversations were between the director and the fans and photographers, not between the director and Rob. Security should have kept people back.
ReplyDeleteHey you guys, I keep hearing people refer to great avis. I don't see anything in the picture frames. How do I access them?
ReplyDeleteAs long as the papps can profit from taking his photos (selling them to the 'source' sites) then they will continue to 'hunt' him. It's supply and demand. What happened in NY last summer? The same damn thing is gonna happen with Bel Ami when it comes time to shoot the exterior shots. And subsequently any other film in which he has to shoot in 'public.'
ReplyDeleteAnd lets be honest here. We cannot scream for more and then wring our hands and moan and feel bad for him when we then 'discover' that it's an intrusion into his life. Can't have it both ways.
Actually, I can live more with the intrusion into his life. What drives me absolutely batshit is when it intrudes on his work. That is absolutely unacceptable. If something like this happened at our places of work, security and possibly the police would be called and it would come to a screeching halt.
It's not his fault but I can understand why he blames himself and how uncomfortable it must make him feel because of what his co-stars have to go through while working with him.
Good God. If he really does go to work with Sean Penn this summer, the shit is gonna hit the fan. Penn will not put up with such shenanigans. That's a situation that could get very nasty. Penn has one helluva temper and he HATES the papps. If such a situation occurs, I hope he doesn't take it out on Rob. If he's frustrated and cannot control the situation, he just might.
As for Rob handling all of this...
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to think that like Kristen, he recognizes bullshit when he sees it. And stardom/celebrity is unadulterated, 100% bullshit.
He knows that all of this is an illusion and that the intensity of the hysteria will eventually calm down.
Meaning...he's not buying into it which is why he's not turning into an asshole over it.
Rob has nothing to worry about. His fanbase it insane. We will love him no matter what. he'll be supported NOT only because he's insanely gorgeous. He is the whole package. Funny, hard working, talented, shy, etc etc. A rare bird. THATS why he blew up as fast as he did. He's genuine. If he can change my tastes comepletely on whats sexy-he can do just about anything..as long as its legal:)
ReplyDeleteRemember me filming was the WTF just happened? Moment for summit. Thats when they realized how big Rob got and thats when they amped up security. I remember when he ran across the street for the New Moon premiere. He has a shitload of men around him.
ReplyDeleteGwen, ooh, ooh, me too, me too!! I loved x-files and you got to watch them filming!!!I'm so envious!
ReplyDeleteNikola, ITA with your assessment of the whole circus hoopla that surrounds Rob. I hope Penn retains enough of his professionalism to realize that Rob isn't to blame for any of it.
