Bel Ami News
Uma Thurman is set to help Robert Pattinson cut his teeth as a bad-boy journalist in “Bel Ami,” which begins filming next month.
“They are planning on doing the film ‘Bel Ami’ in London,” Thurman’s rep told PEOPLE, confirming the actress’ involvement. Of a reported scripted kiss between the stars, the rep said, “The plot of the movie is not being released just yet.”
Pattinson — cast in May in the story based on the 19th-century novel by Guy De Maupassant — will also be joined onscreen by Christina Ricci, reportedly as a promiscuous young housewife, and Kristin Scott Thomas.
The actor, 23, who plays a Parisian soldier-turned-journalist, has said that the lead female role in the movie “needs to be literally inspirational.” One can only guess that Thurman, 39, fills the bill — and then some.

Um...Kate, I like it too!
I am so looking forward to this movie. Hope we get some info from set. Not much, just something to tide us over.
(looks up at pic...keeps looking...can't look away...)
It is most definitely shiver-inducing...among other things (keeps chanting to herself...you're at work...you're at work...be calm, act normal...)
Oh...and I can't freakin' wait for this movie either!!!
LHR OMG you nailed it. Shiver-inducing is right.
Aaaaahhh!! I love Kristin Scott Thomas! Yay for you Rob!

I am officially a puddle today as well, Kate's pic just sent me over the edge.
RPG Anna did such a good job in this movie, really showed her acting chops. She plays so many different emotions b/c she's 23 in the movie and its sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo what I acted like at 23. Hilarious.
Teri,
I can't wait! And I love me some George!
OMG GC is definitely dreamy. I waws crushing on him as a teenager. He gets better with age IMO.
was not waws
are you talking about anna who
Anna K from Twilight movies. She plays Jessica.
Large fabulous photos are much appreciated during the drought, Kate. Thank you.
ok I know her
first of all OMG! lick and save!!!
shiver - melt- stare dreamily...
so I started reading Bel Ami (book, not script) yesterday and have Rob all on the brain as I'm doing so. this part is so awesome for him.
I love this part from ch 1(talking about Georges Duroy - Rob's character) "It's your friend who's taken my fancy. He really is wonderful. I think he could make me do something silly."
I'm only on ch 4, but I can see why Rob wanted to be involved with this. Can't wait to see the movie!
Flawless complexion. Soft beard. Big beautiful eyes.... Add sweat drops and it becomes the sight from luckiest girl`s perspective :)
Rob is performing in "Bel Ami" as character Georges Duroy (Du Roy de Cantel, Baron du Roy de Cantel, Georges du Roy, nickname Bel Ami)
Download book:
BEL AMI OR THE HISTORY OF A SCOUNDREL
by Henri Rene Guy de Maupassant

Download movie script: www.megaupload.com/?d=PJUQQ8H6
yeah lucky girl and thanks for the link sleeper
another visual from the book:
"He had a fund of small talk, a pleasant voice, a caressing glance and his moustache was irresistible. Crisp and curly, it curved charmingly over his lip, fair with auburn tints, slightly paler where it bristled at the ends."
like that part
Oh Kate, I really like that photo too! Smokin hot!! Thanks for the links!
reality calls...be back to the addiction later...
:-)
yeah smokin hot but if it has rob
I'm in the middle of reading the book and like Angie-K said: have "Rob all on the brain"!
Can't wait to see Rob in costume and with a French accent? Will melt into a puddle...I'm going to have to have someone be with me in the theater to help me up off the floor...
I will start it too I just offered to write somthing but noone gave an answer
Spoiler alert_________________________________
**************************************
Georges Duroy is a shit! I guess Rob wants to expand his audience and give us rough, nasty, sexy, sexy, Georges. My take from the book-if you plot and plan the world is your oyster!
Uma is gonna rock boyfriend's world!
Bring it ..Uma
RAWR!
@Kathy, I do typically like my heroes to be fine-upstanding men of honor (ooo-rah), but having read the script:
(spoilers)
---
Georges really, really didn't want to be poor. The part of the appeal of BA to me is that this flips the norm of women using their bodies to get a better life. Here, we've got Georges doing just that. He wanted more, right or wrong. And of course, there's the whole social commentary about the fickleness/cheapness of political power... ; ) Truly think Rob was meant to do this part! From a physical standpoint (as in he's absolutely beautiful)---not to mention the irony of playing on one's looks to be powerful (Hollywood, politics---is there a difference?)
(Gwen's feeling irreverent this morning.)
Love the photo...I really love the photo, I can't seem to get past it to the article!!
Rob as Georges Duroy will kill me. He is so cool!!!
I love Kristin Scott Thomas too. She is a great actress and beautiful woman.
Gwen, couldn't agree more. But ladies be forewarned-I'm sure we will all swoon at the altar of Georges Duroy-he ain't no Edward!!! It is like Rob looked for the perfect foil to Edward Cullen, as Russell Crowe did playing a skinhead then a loving gay guy-(Romper Stomper to The Sum of Us)! This will certainly showcase a whole new Rob!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't wait for this movie, I have read the book and I think they have done the casting perfectly. Rob is the perfect Georges Duroy and Ricci is a perfect fit for Mme de Marelle (Clotilde).
If Uma Thurman and Kristen Scott Thomas are playing who I think they will be (Mme Forestier & Mme Walter)then the casting is spot on.
This character is a total dog but you can't help liking him because of his shear drive and ambition. Plus, nobody in this story is necessarily innocent.
If you have not read Bel-Ami yet you should. Guy de Maupassant is an amazing writer. His short stories are out of this world. Butterball (Boule de suif) is not to be missed.
@Kathy, ITA on Rob wanting to show his range outside of Edward Cullen! ; ) WE appreciate Edward, but the critics? Not so much.
If Rob's performance in RM is solid and he hits a homerun with BA, then he is going to be sitting very pretty (as well he should, cause he is), acting-wise. Box office AND critical acclaim? Hello, World.
@ModishMama, very well said! And ITA about the rest of the characters not being all that innocent as well. Except for Suzanne possibly.
And Kate! This pix is literally killing me! I love it so much! Rob's eyes are just wow. ; )
With RM and now Bel Ami I'm like who cares about Eclipse. Just the thought of Rob doing love scenes....ahhhhh
Gwen, u say his eyes, have u seen his lips?? perfekt and waiting for to be kissed ;)hot hot hot photo...
Something I've been wondering: will they keep the mustache to stay true to the book? Or leave it off 'cause he'll appeal more to modern audiences without it?
(I was watching Mary Poppins the other day and thought it amusing how 1960's Mrs. Banks makeup was.)
Can't WAIT to see the first photos out of this!
shooting in london?!?!?!?!?! what did i miss - i thought they were doing it in budapest?!? im not complaining - if its in london maybe i can somehow stalk the filmset! :-)
trying to catch up -
not all of Rob's characters have to be heroes. so glad to see him doing different things.
with the exception of the Summer House, I've seen all of Rob's movies and love how believable he is as whatever character he is in each one. maybe I'm just biased.
:-)
It's nice that he gets to shoot in London for a while, maybe he'll get to go house hunting while he's there. He's spent so much time working in the US for the past few years, it's probably going to feel like a vacation to him!
Rob also said that about the lead actress for Remember Me so I'm betting it's the same quote!
Oh Sweet Jesus...can't breathe !!!SERIOUSLY HOT PIC !!!!!! I SWEAR
he is THE MOST gorgeous human being that has ever existed !!!!
I love the posts where all we need to do is talk about Rob..
The picture.. ah yeah.. like he's looking right at you.. WTF! How does he do that?
Can't wait for this one either!! The man is making some great choices :)
Teri- Check my avi.LOL
Anyway, Rob is going to kill it. He will be seducing(pleasuring)his way to the top to become a rich mofo. That's all you need to know. Bel Ami is win win all the way around. ;-)
Hot, hot, hot, licked and saved, bring on serious Rob.
Am slighty worried about potentially dodgy moustachio, centre parting and top hat, it is a period piece so realise they are likely to stay true to book - but it does say he is still a beautiful man so will just have to keep the faith.
Kate- Check my avi. I like this pic from that photo shoot in Rome better.
TOO TOO SEXY
Kate- Exactly. The only thing that is really worrying is the mustache. Will it be a handlebar or some big bushy thing covering his beautiful mouth?
@Shani
The book suggests musachio in slim handlebar fashion with curly end [WOT is that about!!!] and the piccy on the front of the book definately gives curly ends impression but lips are evident, maybe he might grow his own and just have add on end [can you do that?]
DuRoy didn't just use his body; he got pleasure doing what he wanted to, just chose carefully to get ahead. And i am not sure he was always a shi-t; he just observed and learned quickly how to not be hungry (the beginning of the book he was trying to figure out how he could eat and drink for the next 2 days).
As for the social comment: Madeline was the one who taught him/modeled for him how to get ahead; she lived her life intelligently planning steps to get where and what she wanted for herself: security, a name, intellectual stimulation (the other women, esp Mrs. Walters, were shown to have set established polite unthinking comments on everything, as a lady ought in those days---brainless, or at least appearing to be so to keep the men secure). Madeline also used her body to help DuRoy get ahead, and I think she felt betrayed by him--she was doing it all for him(and herself, because as he did well and rose in rank and esteem, she as his wife would do so as well).
But (and this may be a SPOILER so beware --it is in the book, at least)a man was able to do all of this, even to get ahead, without repercussions, yet look what happened to Madeline--kind of back to square one, and had to rebuild her life all over again.
I really saw the turning point in Duroy when Madeline refused to tell him about cheating on her first husband. I think he really did adore her until that point. Then he shut off, and after that was just determined to be like her, to use her and anyone else he needed to get where he wanted.
This reminds me of the nursery rhyme:
Georgie Porgie pudding and pie;
kissed the girls and made them cry.
When the boys came out to play,
Goergie Porgie ran away.
Solas - he can make me cry any day lol
Shani - forgive ignorance but wot is an avi?????
I am a relative blogger virgin and am just feeling my way along - not very good at it yet, but I will continue as I am robsessed [sad but true]
@Gwen Cooper 426 You're right Suzanne was innocent. Perhaps the only one.
@solas I totally agree that he adored Madeline up to that point. It was a power struggle between them, they were too much alike I think. Have you read Butterball? If you liked Bel Ami you will like it as well.
The book is just amazing in terms of social commentary and still very relevant today. The movie should be soooo good.
I agree it is still relevant today--sadly.
I read BelAmi kind of by mistake as a teen; I had LOVED the story 'The Necklace' by Guy de Maupassant, and so looked in the library for something by him. Bel Ami found me. ;-) MUCH went over my head, yet I understood a fair amount as well, as I determined yesterday when I read it again. It is a short book; read it!
LindaRose, I agree. It is the second time that this quote has been used for Bel Ami. He actually said it in an interview about Remember Me.
Modish Mom--for sure there was a power struggle there and although they were alike in some core ways, some differences made for conflict and interest as well.
Although Duroy was from a modest/humble background, it was grounded==and remember how he loved agriculture. Like the big city did soemthing to himself. Madeline was not from merely a humble background; she was illegitimate, and in those days the stigma was painful, something someone with intelligence would want to erase.
Even more--Whereas Georges did nothing much for the women he used, except perhaps make them feel desired, perhaps a bit of pleasure here and there, Madeline was a king=maker- she liked taking young things and moulding them into something great, the only way she could make herself into something great. I always thought it amusing that she dubbed him du roy--of the king; she was the kingmaker.
@Solas, this is off topic but I read you were looking for ffs.
Lunière d'Alice is Twilight/Breaking Dawn from Alice's pov, I'm not sure if you've already read it. I haven't read it but it's PG-13.
Thanks so much, JUles! Do you have a link for it? Any other FF that is pg13?
Link:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4185814/1/Luniere
It hasn't been updated in months though, so I'm not sure if you want to get started.
I'll check what I've already read and get back to ya'.
solas, Gwen Cooper (fellow Robsesser) wrote a one-shot ff. That means it is only one chapter. It is supposed to be a moment in time. It is just lovely and is safe for you to read. I read it today.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5601827/1/Muse
Thanks--I wish these writers would finish what they started!!!
oooh that last remark was not for our Gwen! Just for the ones who give so many chapters, hook you, and then disappear!
solas, it drives me crazy. You invest your time reading and they just stop. I'm always hesitant to start an incomplete story.
Same here, I usually check to see when was the most recent update and if it has been months, I just bookmark it and wait.
Waiting on updates is brutal. Darn real life for getting in the way :)
@ solas I have 2 more ff for you Reel Life and Take the Cake both by sandyk199 there is some sex but less than the average mills and boon and they are really light and fluffy, she also gives a cupcake recipe.
I've just finished BA and loved it I don't have to have the central characters as heroes if the story is engrossing enough. I spend quite a bit of time in Paris and I find myself mentally following in Georges footsteps. It is going to be fascinating to see what Rob makes of this part.
Thanks for th elnks of the FF folks.
And yes, i am sooo looking forward to seeing how Rob will translate this character on screen. And he is right--if the actresses cannot elicit from him what is needed, it would be like talking to the wall or to the vacant space like before a CGI is put in, or even worse if the actress isn't on the same page and he has to overcome that.
I guess need to take my sweaty eyes off The Black Dagger Brotherhood series and read Bel Ami. (Thanks to whoever it was HERE that recommended those books, a real guilty pleasure, hiding the book on the train while I read LOL).
Re. the avis, I know what they are, but ahem, does anyone want to tell me how to post one? Kind of embarrassed to even ask.
Rob's fame and Robward fan base, is sure to evolve with every new film and role he plays, which is all good. The sooner he puts Edward Cullen behind him, the better, and we know which "fans" will still be standing, commenting and obsessing.
lallieb, click on your name at any of your comments. Then click on edit profile. There will be an option to download a picture for your avi. After you download go all the way to the bottom of the page to save it. Hope this helps.
Don't mean to seem daft, but what's a mills and boon?
@Jules: Mills & Boon = Harlequin romance, if you know of the latter. Had a cousin who wrote for both for a bit.
ADM, you are so sweet! ; ) Thank you for rec!
Hugs,
Gwen
the lead woman needs to be inspirational.............true..........so why pick Ricci???????????
I think Uma should be Clotilde - not CR.
Oh, and Thurman needs a new rep, judging by the suppposed answers given by this one. Course, that could just be People at its usual standard...
@solas Your totally right, Madeline was an amazing character. Uma Thurman better be playing Madeline as she will be perfect for the part.
I get way more excited than I should for movies based on good books!
I haven't seen Thurman in much so I am not sure if she can pull off what is needed. I hope so.
I usually dread movies made from books; it is rarely that the movie is better and most often is way worse. I did love the Harry Potter movies as well as the books. The only other movie-from-books I can think of that were as good as or better than the books are:The Fixer (from Melamud); Last of the Mohicans (Daniel Day-Lewis version: although kind of a conglomeration of 2 of the leatherstocking tales, not just Last of the Mohicans; and Everything is Illuminated.
Can ADM or Gwen please send me Gwen's ff? All I get from the site you gave me is an ad and I cannot get rid of it.
Re ff-- I really appreciate the ones that are another POV. I have always (like since I was 5 yrs old) wondered about characters in books and how they saw things. I also used to wonder what objects saw, their POV (like I would wonder, when I had a penny, where it had been, who held it before me, what it had bought, etc). I know, I was(/am) strange. Anyway--different POV is one thing I look for in FF. The other is modesty--I don't like any overt sex in what I read; implied is fine. Cursing does often offend and sometimes scare me but I will still read something with curses in it.
And FINISHED ff with those criteria are most appreciated.
Here it is solas. Hope it works.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5601827/1/Muse
Solas, check your email! ; )
LOL, because my one-shot hits ALL of your criteria!
Hugs,
Gwen
Thanks again, ADM! ; ) Hugs!
You are very welcome Gwen.
Thanks all! Hugs to you all!
Gwen, it was perfect! Just my cup of tea! Thanks again!
AP- This is late, but thanks! See? You learn all sorts of stuff on Robsessed :o)
