“New Moon” takes #3 all-time best opening weekend with $140.7M

Summit Entertainment now officially estimates that The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in $140.7M from 4024 theaters this weekend. This puts the film in third place for all-time opening weekends, behind The Dark Knight ($158.4M) and Spider-Man 3 ($151.1M) and ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($135.6M). The film also hauled in $158.8M internationally. This was the widest opening of all time for an independent film and the biggest ever box office opening for an indie.

There was a 41% drop from Friday to Saturday, about the exact same percentage decrease Twilight had one year ago (down 40.8% Saturday, down 41.9% Sunday). Another 40% drop going into Sunday, based on advance sales, tracking polls, and other industry formulas, brings the weekend total to $140.7M.

For those who are new to the box office numbers game, it may seem odd to have these figures when Sunday isn't even over yet. But it is standard procedure to have weekend totals announced at this time. After the Saturday box office totals come in on Sunday morning, studios always estimate Sunday and come up with a weekend projection. Of course, Sunday and weekend figures can only be estimates at this point. The actual Sunday numbers aren't known until Monday. But many years and literally thousands of projections have yielded formulas that allow the industry to predict fairly closely what Sunday will be based on Friday and Saturday's numbers and, therefore, what the weekend will look like. The actual numbers that come in on Monday are usually not too far off from the estimates made on Sunday. They usually adjust slightly up or down but are rarely far off.

I'm sure if they had Robward in there more, more people would have gone to see the movie a second and third and even fourth time. But anyways I give them props for trying to stick to the book. And NM is indeed a smash hit.

But don't you think that maybe NM will make more as the day goes on? I mean my time, it's still 11:30 in the morning...

Anyways this is great news and this means that Eclipse will most probably beat them all (with its battle scene towards the end, and the intense and beautiful E/B romance, and Edward's active presence), if David Slade does a good job and does not screw it up (hopefully).

The Twilight saga is indeed a smash hit... Long Live E/B!
woohoo!

Dear Summit,

In appreciation to all the fans for breaking box office records, it'd be really fabulous if the Special Edition DVD includes not only extended and deleted scenes, but a Director's Cut version (meaning more movie, not just unused snippets)---go crazy, make it 3 or more hours! Please?

With much love and thanks,
A loyal fan

Yes ! Great !! I did my part but in France…
Good job, american people ! ;-)

Gwen, I'm totally with you. It would be soooo great. CW told, in an interview (but I can't remember where or when) he has more than 20 minutes of unused scenes for New Moon.
I want those 20 minutes !!!!

They may have estimated low because our local complex has 16 showtimes for today and as of right now 6 showing are totally sold out. We're going again this evening, Hubby is heading over to
buy tickets in a minutes for one of the later shows and it's my second time this weekend. I was at the hairdressers on Friday and that's all they were talking about, the shop is closed Monday and they all (about 6 stylists) had advance tickets for Monday afternoon and they'd brought a TV in the shop so they could watch Rob on Ellen at 4:00pm Friday. This is going to be interesting.
