Robert Pattinson has captured the hearts of an untold number of fans with his portrayal of Edward Cullen in “Twilight.”
Rob’s brooding good looks and the film, about eternal love and teen angst, are strikingly similar to two monumental teen idols from previous generations – James Dean and Marlon Brando - who starred in similar movies.
Every other generation or so, an actor comes along who captures the imagination of their contemporaries. Brando and Dean were those actors in the 1950s.
Rob is having the same breakout success in "Twilight." Ironically, both Brando and Dean became international sensations in coming-of-age movies about teenage angst in tumultuous times.
What makes them so alike and what makes them different?
Dean, a relative unknown, vaulted to fame in “East of Eden,” a film based on a novel by Nobel Laureate John Steinbeck. He played the troubled son of a farmer in a story loosely based on the Biblical tale of Cain and Abel.
His performance in the film foreshadowed his role as Jim Stark in “Rebel Without A Cause,” which has parallels to “Twilight.” Both Dean's and Pattinson's characters are angst-ridden, misunderstood outcasts, trying to find themselves, if for different reasons.
In “Rebel Without a Cause,” a 1955 film, Dean’s 17-year-old character is a new to the town. He’s moody and alienated, and different from than the others in his high school much like Edward Cullen.
In "Twilight," however, Bell Swan (Kristen Stewart) is new to the school. But they share the same feelings of being outsiders, being different.
Dean's character meets Judy, played by Natalie Wood,, a budding actress at that time, who would go on to international fame. She was Dean's Kristen.
The film was an attempt to portray the moral decay of American youth with a focus on parents who failed to assert moral discipline. But it was also about the pressure to conform and about being different – two themes that also appear in “Twilight.”
Dean confronts bullies at the school, much like Edward Cullen must deal with renegade vampires who threaten Bella.
In 1953, Brando starred in “The Wild One” about the leader of a motorcycle gang that takes over a small town.
Brando became an iconic symbol of teen rebellion and posed on his own Triumph Thunderbird 6T motorcycle, forever associating freedom and teen rebellion with motorcycles, leather jackets and blue jeans.
Ironically, director Nicholas Ray helmed both “The Wild One” and “Rebel Without a Cause.”
Both Dean and Brando became young sex symbols. Brando went on to star in a number of classics such as Stanley Kowalski in “A Streetcar Named Desire” and Terry Malloy in “On the Waterfront,” both powerhouse performances directed by Elia Kazan in the early 1950s.
Rob is just at the beginning of his career and where it will go from here is still anyone’s guess. But he clearly has the makings of a major star.
Brando, of course, went on to a long, distinguished career, including such movies as “The Godfather” and "Apocalypse Now."
By the time “Rebel Without a Cause” came out, however, Dean had been killed after crashing his brand new Porsche. He was forever immortalized as a teen icon.
Let’s hope Rob’s career is more like Brando’s than Dean’s.
So what do you think?
Is Rob his generation’s Brando or Dean? Or someone else?

Have to say Dean although it is unfortunate that his fame came after his death....Am I suffering from Teenage Angst ???
I don't think he is comparable to anyone, he is a force all his own!
Adorkable Robert Pattinson, they should be trademarking him...
I agree babbles.
He's his own category.
You can't overlook the adorkability.
*waves at computer*
Oh Hi Dani!!!!!
I hate when they compare people to legends! That is hard to live up to and people can't wait for you to fail! Robert Pattinson will be the new actor Robert Pattinson making his own way as an actor not the new past legend!IMO
James Dean- bad karma...no no no I think he is more like Brad Pitt. When Brad made his debut in Thelma and Louise he was on everyones radar...he was the gorgeous new sex symbol...just like Rob is with Twilight. Brad could easily have just faded away as the new "IT" guy but Brad has managed to have a long successful career-he is still considered a sex symbol but also a very good actor. Why? because we liked brad pitt and he made good choices.... Rob will be like that..make good choices Rob!!!!! we love you we want to see you for many many years to come!!!
@isabel, well said, I agree! Lordy, James Dean was hot, too, but please be more careful than that Rob! We love you and need you to stick around!
finally someone realizes Rob is has that appeal to James Dean and Marlon Brando. Something told me he has this quality like Dean and Brando. But Rob has his uniqueness, im not sayin that rob is comparable to these two famous actors but something about those two actors their own state of mind, rob has that. He doesn't follow the trend as to say but he goes against it.
James Dean's untimely demise - that must have been catastrophic to his fans at the time!
Tempt: you're changing avi's like (combusted) undies! What happened to wet Rob?
Georgie - I can't imagine life without Rob in it now!! Please don't ever let him get hurt.. I went there with those thoughts after the taxi incident. Couldn't bare it if he was ripped from us so soon, he has fears like that himself that he has voiced in interviews - where will all the frenzy around him end?? Hopefully things will calm down for him and he will be safe for a long long time.
Georgie - I haven't found one that totally grabs me yet , I am surfing photo's - I found a great one of Rob in his undies but he was younger, perhaps a little gross for someone my age.....although I do like the wet with the nipple.....I shall keep searching..
Tempt - I'm liking it!! Darcy-esque!
Please! Can we stop the comparisons? This is ridiculous! Stop comparing Robert Pattinson, or any other actor for that matter, with anybody else! They are all utterly diverse! Don't you people see it! Stop trying to foresee someone's future based on nonsense! You might ruin some promising actor's life and career along the way. QUIT IT!
A few months ago on a drunken Friday night, the RK's tried to make a "Robkenstein" out of avi body parts - it was quite artistic and clever, eg. hair, eyes, nose, lips, jaw, etc, all in sequence.
Please! Can we stop the comparisons? This is ridiculous! Stop comparing Robert Pattinson, or any other actor for that matter, with anybody else! They are all utterly diverse! Don't you people see it! @ Tempt: "Zygote Rob" in the undies - please don't go there! Wet nipply Rob - YUM!
you're right Georgie - were you just reading my mind!! I just clicked a link elsewhere to Zygote Rob - ughh!! He is a baby - so much so that all I can think of is my beautiful 14 year old son!!! And that is soooooooo not somewhere I wanna go.
Sigh, the more famous he becomes, the more my chances of having sex with him dissappear. They're at minus 2000 now, I can't afford to lose any more chances. :-)
Marna, our dreams and vivid imagination will have to pull us through our Rob-existence...
I don't really think his acting or persona resemble either Brando or Dean at all. Dean and Brando were prettty revolutionary, and they sorta changed the game after they came onto the scene.
I don't really get that vibe with Pattinson yet. But I do see him sorta finding a great niche for doing things left of center ala Johnny Depp eventually. I see him seeking out roles that he can find ways to layer and bring depth to because while his acting abilities are still growing, he's a smart kid and a literate kid and an insightful kid and an artistic kid and I think all those qualities will help him to bring really interesting characters to life.
Well, Rob is Rob and that's it, as others have said he cannot really be compared with Dean or Brando, but if you twisted my arm and I had to really pick one of the two, I'd have to say James Dean, only for the physical aspect, though.
I'm sure it's a huge honor to mentioned in the same breath as James Dean and Marlon Brando (and I hope this is taken correctly), but if I were an up and coming actor (singer, writer, etc...) I don't think I'd like to be compared with anyone.
How can you be the next anyone? You're yourself and nothing else.
This is funny because I was talking to my aunt in Winnipeg about 6 months ago and telling her about Rob, she asked me what he was like, I answered (right off the time of my head..) "He looks like a cross between James Dean and Marlon Brando..but with charm"..she said.."Oh yeah!! I have to see this man!!"
Yes Dean had bad 'Karma' but in his defense, that accident was NOT his fault, he was an excellent driver and had won a number of trophies at the track. He was on his way to a race when he was killed by another driver doing something totally stupid and unpredictable. I get nervous about Rob in a Porcshe because he hasn't driven enough and a car like that wants to drive itself. I prefer Rob in a Taxi or Limo, thank you very much!
I think at this point he reminds me more of Brando in looks anyway. Let's hope he isn't like Brando and remains ♥ Adorkable♥..
Oh yeah...forgot to mention, I do think he has that quality, not comparing him to Dean and Brando as far as Actors go, although I can see protential there for him to grow into an excellent method actor, he's got fantastic facial expressions and intense eyes. I think he could probably do those incrediable emotional scenes like both of them were so good at.
But I think he has the same type of influence on his particular generation. Brando and Dean had a different type of angst that came out of post WWII and the great depression. The 50's and 60's were a very different world then we are living in today and bred so many revolutions in so many different directions.
This is a new world with a totally different type of angst and I have a feeling that Rob is going to change things, I think he's already started doing just that. So in that sense I think..Yeah, Rob could be this generation's James Dean and Marlon Brando, Lord knows, this generation needs it, we don't need another Kurt Cobain..
*ducking all the rotton tomatoes from Nirvana fans* *splat*
its 7.00 am here in NYC, another week begins with more rob rumors, rob's rep going to be very busy this week denying all this stuff, rep going to be working over time.
just read a cool interview new moon director chris did with MTV, i love him great sense of humor,i cant wait new moon going to be awesome.
sexyrpattz77 - What are the Rob rumours?
babbles and luffscruff - I agree with both of you, Rob is unique, in a category all his own, and you cannot overlook the adorkability!!!
Yes...that's what I said about Rob...he reminds me so much of James Dean. Of course Rob isn't into car racing, thank Rob (God) yea, he's my God! ;) Funny, James Dean is one of Rob's favorite icons and I can see where he got some of his style from. ;)
Godze, omg your dad knows who Rob is?! That's funny!! A lot of my aunts and female cousins has read the Twilight saga already and the cousins adore....I mean adore Rob, just like me! Now I know the right kind of family I'm from! Ha ha ha ha!
Ladies, you're right...Rob has his own style. He even has his own category! :) I'd say the style I was thinking of James Dean is the hair and sideburns. That scruff. Those eyes. How he holds his cigarette. Should I go on?! Ha ha.
I think that both comparison have merit Dean's career came to a premature end it's difficult to say where his career would have gone. However I find that Rob has many qualities that neither of the other 2 possessed.
Only time will tell how successful Rob will be but I intend on following his career with keen interest.
Tempt are you around tonight?? We are trying to draw you out of hiding and get you to reveal your true identity!! LOL
Hi JandR, just trawling some gossip sites for any Rob news but nothing much about. I should really "get a life" but I do like hanging out here with you guys.
Hi Georgie - you won't believe this but I wrote a huge long message to tempt Tempt to join us on fb and it wouldn't post and I lost it - hah hah - serves me right for being such a smart ass!!
TOR have a robwatch going on - 9 days with no sightings - I'm dying here
Oh isn't that annoying when that happens. That happened to me in a chat on FB and the damn thing wouldn't "send".
In my trawl for Rob material, I came across this clip of Sex on Fire by KOL which I'd seen before but nice to revisit since he went and saw KOL again recently. In case you haven't seen it:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3052867686371023325
Thanks for the link Georgie - i love when someone posts links here to go and explore. I have seen some Rob vids to KOL Sex on Fire - the song suits down to the ground LOL
Maybe they're letting Rob sleep at the Cullen house LOL, that way there's no following him on and off the set. Although they can easily avoid the papz by staying in a hotel with a basement carpark where a limo with blacked out windows can pick him up and take him back. Still, not much of a life if he's a prisoner of the movie set and hotel, but perhaps that's what he prefers right now.
when i need a Rob fix I can't help but go back to the old interviews - i just love listening to him speak and then watching him squirming around in his dorky cuteness when he gets flustered or embarrassed. But also he really thinks before answering questions and you feel like you are getting the genuine article - can this guy be real???
well the rest of the cast seem to be happily living normal lives don't they?? Saw Ashley Greene walking her cute little dog and Bryce Dallas Howard and her gorgeous hubby and son out strolling around with their cute little son. Unfair. Rob frenzy has driven him underground!
Yes that's what cinched it for me, the Rob interviews! Surely once NM is close to release, he'll come out and do some high profile shows like Letterman; maybe even Rove!
go to bing or google or yahoo news and all new rumors are there *sigh* as i said earlier new week so they are making up new shit.
hi Georgie and Jandr: Quiet tonight?
Gossip.com has Xavier Samuel next to a Rob pic where they reckon he's trying to "eclipse" Rob:
http://au.eonline.com/uberblog/index.jsp?utm_campaign=gossipCom&utm_source=webURL&utm_medium=redirect
Hi Orion, yes I think everyone in the northern hemisphere is getting ready for a new work week; we're just recovering from our Mondayitis.
Rob wouldn't be seen dead in a cardy so I think Xavier is just being himself
Just saw some pics of Orlando - haven't bothered looking for such a long time - god he still has the most gorgeous face - i just love that bone structure.
Getting back to Rob - maybe we could petition Rove to have him on!
shame Orlando seems to be little more than a man-bag for Miranda Kerr these days - oh and he has some new tatts I hadn't seen before. Has beefed up some too - mmm still yummy LOL
It'd have to be on a video link but hey Rove does it all the time.
Jackie O is a big Rob fan; she and Kyle are back on the radio (for now) after the lie detector debacle, so she's sure to try and get him for an interview - but I think it'll be a lot more stage-managed this time around. In the Twi days they did everything and anything, but now they'll be wheeling Rob out a lot more selectively I'd imagine.
I see where Orlando has a new movie coming out in October - New York, I love you - I wonder was he mobbed during its filming anywhere near as much as Rob in RM?
I wouldn't think so - Rob is fresh meat - the new kid on the block - Orlando did that and the fuss seems to have died down somewhat now!! I have just looked at a gallery of recent pics of him and no frenzied fans around him - he looks happy and relaxed in the pappz pics and even at a red carpet - no screaminf crying females so maybe this kinda frenzied attention does kinda fade with time...hope so for Rob's sanity!
Lynda, your comments were spot-on. Brando and Dean were unique products of their generation, and it's very hard to compare "apples to oranges" with any actor to come of age in a totally different era.
I think what Rob does share with those iconic actors is that indescribable factor that makes it impossible to look away when he is onscreen. The camera loves him--his bone structure; his beautiful, expressive features; his deep, silky voice. He has a soulfulness that resonates, and it that repsect I would compare him favorably with Brando and Dean.
Acting-wise, and probably career-trajectory-wise as well, I would compare him most to Johnny Depp. I like what Rosa said about him finding his niche "left of center" like Johnny did. That's what I foresee for Rob.
Not having watched any of LOTR, did Orlando play an "appealing" character, or was he just a hobbit LOL?
I am so out of the loop where Orlando is concerned these days!! I didn't even know he had a new movie coming out. We have everything he has been in up to Elizabethtown and Pirates 3 but nothing since!
the other cast have more freedom because none of them have reached rob's super star status, not even taylor or kristen, people are only stalking kris because of the rumors she is dating rob,its all connected to him,let me put it this way...ashley kissing chace NO ONE CARES did not make the evening news, rob puts hand on megan fox BREAKING NEWS,rob snuggle with kristen at concert WHOLE WORLD STOPS women go mad, breaking news as far as japan and the middle east, rob is the only man who can eclipse obama.
Georgie - I can't believe you??? Legolas was the hottest elf ever in filmdom - he had me obsessed for several years - to the point that I went to NZ to meet him, corresponded with his mother, and met the creator of a major OB fan site. I rang hhis agent in London to find out how we could get to see him in person!!!! Crazy, crazy - but hey not unlike my Robsession these days. LOL
You must google Legolas and see what I mean!
sexyrpatt77
you are so right - just check out Getty images - they have 500 pix of Kristen and 2500 of Rob
And Georgie - just checked out the NY I love you trailer - looks like a US version of Love Actually!! I loved LA - one of my fave films! Can't beat it (apart from LOTR and Twilight that is LOL)
Wow JandR you did some serious tracking down of your then obsession, and here I was thinking it was for your kids LOL. Can I "tag along" when you get to see Rob in NZ during UC??
I was sending some scans to Goz
Well I kid myself I did it for Claire but truth be told - that trip to NZ for the LOTR Return of the Kind world premiere was a spur of the moment graduation present to myself and I had two weeks between when I decided to go and when it happened. Had to get Claire a passport - some frenzied planning and booking but it had a fantastic outcome. Yes I will happily do the same if I get to see Rob and Hugh Jackman in NZ filming UC!
Just checked out Legolas; Orlando is better looking as himself than with blonde hair pulled back LOL!
Anyway back to thinking about Rob (sigh)...
Oh yes of course Hugh Jackman too - BONUS!!
Orion - what scans did you send to Goz?
...you reminded me JandR that I'm 3 months overdue for a graduation present myself! I've just been wallowing in my Robsession in all that new-found free time LOL but I think I need something a little more tangible now.
Georgie - we fell in love with that blonde Legolas before we even knew that Orlando had dark hair. Must say I then decided I liked his natural dark curly hair better.
But yes this is Robsessing not Orlando sessing so off him for now. You just sent me back there and I haven't been there in a long, long time. LOL
OOps sorry Orion, I missed your comment; yes "what scans" - anything different?
So georgie - for that graduation present - is a trip to Vancouver out of the question?? LOL
Ha ha I think Vancouver is a lost cause going by the past 9 days!
NZ it is then. I will see what I can find out from my contacts over there hahaha!!
...although if Jacqui wins the Lotto I'll jump on the bandwagon LOL
NZ is a long way for you JandR, but only a $119 Jetstar flight from Brisbane. But you have rellies there so at least you can "justify" the trip (I mean, I'm getting enough shit put on me for going to Sydney for NM for f@@#s sake!)
LOL Georgie - I spoke to my brother in law in Auckland yesterday and mentioned I had some ideas about coming over in Dec or Jan LOL - Well you can't make something happen if you're not prepared can you? LMAO
...and you've done it before, you GO GIRL!!
Anyway, it'd bedtime so I'll grab a chapter of ff and hopefully have sweet Robdreams.
g'nite JandR and Orion if you're there.
Now these are comparisons I can support!
Actually Rob mentioned James Dean as one of the actors that he wanted to sound like with his american accent. Also there is a pic of Rob with a maroon sweater that is covering his neck and mouth, James Dean has a similar pic with a green sweater. I'm a James Dean fan but Rob has his own style and these are way different times from the '50s, so comparing teen angst from the '50s to now is completely unfounded.
@JandR
i notice that to,her popularity is all connected to him,if its proven she is not with rob then no one would care and she would simply fall off the radar, any woman connected to rob will be stalked
I actually have been contemplating James Dean and Marlon Brando with regards to Rob Pattinson lately. The first time I saw Marlon Brando on film was in the 70s, and he was a big fat growly jowly old man in the Godfather movies. Then a few weeks ago I saw a commercial with Marlon Brando on a motorcycle, and I was shocked at how goodlooking he was, how fit he seemed. And I started worrying for Rob. Is this what he will look like, especially if he doesn't take care of himself,or if he has no one to take care of himself, if he keeps drinking soda and eating junk and fast food?? Uch-- please--no!!! I know Brando was a fine actor, and I expect no less from Rob, but I do want more from Rob in good health.
I first saw James Dean when I was about 7, and a rerun of East of Eden, which was made before I was born, was on TV. Even at 7, I asked, Who is that cute guy? And my older sister told me. He certainly did capture brooding and teen angst! ANd, IMHO, Rob does so just as well now. But like many who came after him (Esp River Phoenix, Heath Ledger) James Dean died way too young. When I saw photos of Rob being chased by snaparazzis whilst in a Porsche, horrors of Princess Diana and James Dean shot through my head. Where do we go from here? Rob-- please take care of yourself. Those of us who care will try to make things safer for you, at least by trying to make eedjuts see that jumping you and screaming at you and hounding and hunting you are not good for you, but you have to take care of yourself as well. You are a big boy-- see the writing on the wall and don't let it be for yourself. Forge your own destiny, with your own talent, already formidable--don't look to emulate anyone else, but rather develop yourself richly, in good health and safety. And Long may you run.
G'night Georgie!!
Hi Suz - I left you a message a couple of days ago - loved your pics - "@SUZ - if you're out there and come back on thanks for sharing your Rob pics from Central Park - awesome!!! And your blog makes me laugh - effing kidding me with the tongue...LMAO - exactly how I feel - it only I could peel my eyes away...." and I would sway with you gals anytime - love ya!!
I also don't know, since I wasn't around at the time and TV wasn't what it is now, and there were no YOUTUBEs, etc, what Brando's and Dean's personalities were like. I have a good idea from watching and reading interviews and youtubes, that Rob has charm and wit such as I have never seen. He reads, he things, he observes. For myself, not knowing much about Brando and Dean, this all sets Rob apart from them. Just let him be safe and well, and take good care of himself!
anyone read the MTV interview with new moon director chris? he said taylor is to fill rob's void.
@sexypattz: Chris is promoting Taylor a lot. Understandable, I guess. But there are limits! lol
Dean and Brando: the only comparison is the heat and the hype. He may prove as gifted but Rob cracks up way too much to fit the sulky, moody mode. They will always provide inspiration.
I hate comparisons of this type particularly when they are not contemporary.
Dean's career was cut short and we have no idea where it would have gone. Brando ended up a fat recluse that was heralded as a great actor based on the performances of his youth.
I believe that Rob is significantly different not only is he multi-talented but he has a penchant for picking projects that test his abilities and provide learning experiences for him to grow as an actor.
I think unless Rob chooses to abandon acting that his career will flourish and be very interesting to follow in the years to come.
I came bearing a present hiya ladies
http://thinkingofrob.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/b_roll_2281.jpg
Here's a better link to that site, the first one didn't work for me.
http://thinkingofrob.wordpress.com/
Anyway, thank you thank you. I have never seen Rob as Edward looking so hot! Yummm...
I am so bored and Rob hungry right now like you all are. I think I have seen every interview on Youtube and was gonna ask you guys for some links.
That is a good one!
I also like the KOL sex on fire vids. Yum yum
Rob did say that James Dean was his idol. So the comparison to Dean would be a huge compliment to Rob.
Dean and Brando were brilliant actors of their generation. Their images live on to this day. Whenever their names are brought up people think icon or legend. Their movies roles stand out because of what they each brought to the characters.
Yes, Rob does stand alone in this new generation of pop icons,famewhores,etc...
Lynda and Leann- I concur
Angela- Look at The Improper link for this post. They have a lot of great old interviews and videos of Rob. Some of the best ones.
So if anyone is getting bored or want to remember the good old days of Rob being himself in interviews go to that link NOW.
I really hate when they compare him to others...I feel he is in a "special" class all his own..
I can see how the sex appeal can be somewhat compared-but I didn't think James Dean was a very good actor, he was just good @ brooding..and of course died too soon. I actually think his death crushed my mom beyond repair.
Yes, Marlon was HOT in his youth, and was a great actor-but turned in to a big slobola..
Rob is Rob and I'm happy with that..
I did like the previous comparison to Newman & Redford..both beautiful, great actors, good people and lived long lives (of course Redfors is still kickin)
thanks yep, I found em. the vids kept me busy this am. There were some radio interviews I hadn't heard before.
He is so convincingly self deprecating and so in denial that he is a multi millionaire stud.
Oh wait, now I found the improper links too. There goes my afternoon.
Wanna see some hot manips?

Haha dani, even your grandpa knows him?
Rob should move to Austria (Europe ;))...no one knows him here, at least that´s how it feels.
Not that I mention him a lot...I´m a private robsessor ;-) ...
Have you guys seen this?
http://thinkingofrob.wordpress.com/2009/08/24/2-great-pics-of-robert-pattinson-during-the-filming-of-twilight/
Gorgeous photos.
I agree with you all. I've followed Robsessed for almost a year - and watching his fame explode has come as no surprise to us Robsessers.
It's not the first someone's tried to explain his appeal by comparing him to other screen idols. And we know what appeals to us. Don't we all want to lock him away and protect him from everyone - but us - our own guilty pleasure...
I agree with comparisons to Depp and LDC, or Pitt, even Redford, not because I think he has the same characteristics or will make the same career choices - but because a few years from now he'll be looking over his shoulder at the next up-and-coming actor with papparazzi, stalkers and blogs following them, knowing that he has much success and retained legions of intelligent, beautiful and adoring fans.
"Decidedly So"
Absolutely....Rob is a James Dean/Elvis Presley in my mind. He will be the new icon of this generation. His looks are so unique and different he looks like both of them, with Elvis's eyes. I have NEVER been so intrigued by any famous person (since Elvis) until now... Rob is special and I just hope his career keeps going. And I pray for him that he dosen't end up like James Dean...or Princess Diana...the way she was hunted, is like how its happening with Rob. If you're reading this...be careful Rob...if it gets too much for you, then check out of this lifestyle...its not worth your life!
He is an original.. there are no comparisons... a unique soul...let him be himself.. let him discover who he is.. don't try to categorize him into something previous.. I don't need to figure him out and have a place to put him in the categories of life to adore him... He is Robert f*cking Pattinson... and that's all I need him to be, or be like.
Well said Kelly! I'm with you and babbles, Tess, Athena, et al. He's an original. And I'm an optimist and don't think we have to worry about NOT having him around to adore -al that we adore - sexual charisma, adorkability, self-deprecating charm, etc. etc. - and all still there...
@JandR
Thanks for the shout out. Glad you like the photos.. I tell you, it was a pleasure shooting them.
OH and BTW
That was NOT the RK's doing the "Frankenstein Rob"
Comparisons are ridiculous. Actors should not be following other legends, but rather, creating their own, as Rob is -hopefully- in the process of doing. However...they are inevitable. As far back as GOF, he's been called "the new Jude Law." (When Julia Roberst hit with Pretty Woman, the critics called her..."Audrey Hepburn, Carole Lombard and Lucille Ball all rolled into one." I thought...'don't do that to her, she's only 22 for god's sake). But I must say...
The moment I first layed eyes on him (last year at the Con), my first thought was..."James Dean" (with a little bit of the young Elvis Presley thrown in for good measure). But it's not just the looks. It's his talent. I can spot talent from a country mile away and I knew he had it BEFORE I saw Twilight. It was when I saw Haunted Airman. I figured he was about 20 when he gave that performance and knowing that he had no formal training, I remember thinking...'my god, it's all instinct." And that's it. Much like Dean and Brando, he is an instinctual actor.
Yes, Twilight made him an international movie star, but it was after I saw How To Be and Little Ashes that I KNEW he was more than just a movie star. He was an actor to be reckoned with.
Look at those four performances; HA, HTB, LA and TWI. Such amazingly diverse performances from such a young actor with no formal training. Even the 'look' of those characters; take still photos of Toby, Art, Dali and Edward. Lay them side by side. They don't even look anything alike. He's a chameleon and THAT you cannot learn in an acting school. Either you have that ability or you don't.
I've said it before and I'll say it again...if he makes the right choices, he could very easily wind up not only the biggest male movie star of his generation but also, one of it's most important actors if IF he wants it. And if so...
Then one day they'll be saying about another...'look, there's the new Rob Pattinson.'
Nik
i think he is just a new star. a new actor, and is different.
Just one problem here though...
At the moment, his celebrity outweights his talent. By that I mean, how many people have seen HA, HTB and LA? Or have heard his music? Most only know him from Twilight. He's got alot on his shoulders and he KNOWS IT.
He's got four more films as Edward Cullen and during that time, he's got to give the uninformed (and the critics -who can make or break a career with their criticism- and alot of whom also know nothing more of him other than Edward), he's got to give 'more.' Hopefully, Remember Me and Unbound Captive will do the trick. If those are failures (both artisically and financially), he'll have to really scramble for the roles he wants upon the conclusion of the Twilight franchise.
On the other hand...he's said that he doesn't really care. He may not want this BIG career that's being predicted for him. Maybe he'll be happier going the 'oddball indie route.'
One thing I am pretty sure of is...he's not going to be predictable. Too much of a thinker and rebel for that.
Nik
Spot on about that the versatility of Rob, Nikola! He IS a chameleon, and that will be an invaluable tool as his career progresses. Anyone who thinks he's a one-note player after seeing only "Twilight" really ought to do themselves a favor and check out his other work. "Haunted Airman" is what did it for me, too, as far as seeing the potential in him for great things. As far as I'm concerned, he has had truly transcendent moments in each movie he's made. Moments that really jump out and make you FEEL whatever character he's playing is feeling. He breaks through that invisible wall that separates the actor from the character, and the character from the audience. I can't wait to see what he'll surprise me with in the future.
Shani baby...where is that link??? I didn't see it in this thread. (?)
One last thing and then I'll shut up. Promise.
Re-thinking my last post a bit. He should be okay even if RM and UC aren't great successes and that's because Hollywood (the powers that be), they KNOW how good he is. They've seen the earlier work. Hell, he was cast in RM and UC BEFORE Twilight made him a star.
Where this all goes, is in his own hands and what an incredible thing that is for an actor of only 23 with just ONE hit film under his belt (I don't GOF. That wasn't HIS film)
Nik
so another day without rob??
Meant to say...I don't 'count' GOF.
That's it. Shutting up. Swear to gawd.
Leann- Click the highlighted pink part that says "The Improper.com"
That's the link to Rob's old interviews. They are so good.
Nikola--Don't shut up! It is good to see and confirm that some of us recognized Rob's talent before the screams of Twilight brought him to the attention of everyone else. Chameleon is very much what I was thinking. I first noticed this with Daniel Day Lewis-- each film he was in, he really looked like a different person, as if he let the soul of the character in and let it transform him. And now I have noticed this with Rob as well. But I don't see it as COMPARING ROb to DDL, or to Brando or to James Dean, or to anyone else, just noticing an ability in more than one person. And, as I said above, I have never before seen or noticed a personality -- the charm, the wit, the boy-next-door adorableness, yet literate, insightful, thinking-- like this lad has.
Nik, I don't want you to shut up! I like your posts, you always make excellent points, and as usual, I agree with you totally :).
Toby Jugg is still my favourite role (now in a toss-up with Dalì) and chameleon is the right word! The ability of his face to always be different, to always change is one of the things that fascinates me the most. I can always find something new in his face and that's why I never tire of watching him.
Personally, although I would love to see him on top of the world, I don't mind what path he chooses, as long as he finds happiness in it. I think we all at Robsessed, who like him as a whole, 360° human being, will always find ways to know what he's up to and support him ;)!
It's weird... there is something about this man that really makes me care for his well-being like it has never happened before. I really want him to be completely happy and in good health.
I'd LOVE for Rob to play James Dean and remake Rebel without a Cause - that would be cool.
Or just do a movie about Dean's life.

Why can't they just give Rob the credit he deserves? He's not the next anything. He's Rob Pattinson and he's talented. I know the whole "tortured artist" thing is hot, but the man is amazing without people comparing him to any of the greats. They were great for being James Dean and Marlon Brando, let Rob be great for being himself... the talented man that he is.
And that was my rant for the day... :P
