What I can say in his defense is this (and I recognize it because I do it myself, all of the time) - when i'm feeling uncomfortable, I tend to get sarcastic sometimes in an attempt to defuse the tension. I also think he isn't sure that he deserves the awards because he knows twilight wasn't really good and is up against better movies.
So what I feel is total awkwardness and not always knowing how to handle things. It's my personal feeling...

OMG that was soooooooooo HOT......they won best kiss, then went to "re-enact" it and right before she got there, she turned around and said Thank you for the award. It was soooooo great. She looked pissed at first, but then you could tell it was part of the act. And Rob had to remove his gum first. OMG OMG I am melting!!! 3 for 3 so far, c'mon Twilight!!!!!
