Exclusive: Pattinson Gets Serious, Tells Us 'How to Be'
You know him as the vampy star of "Twilight," but Robert Pattinson has a few other projects going on that you may not have heard of. One of them is the indie flick "How to Be," available on IFC Direct starting April 29. In the film he plays Art, a guy who doesn’t really fit in (imagine that!) and is looking for his place in the world. Art is stuck in a rut and enlists an elderly self-help guru to guide him down the road of life. Pattinson sat down for an exclusive interview and gave us the inside scoop on singing live in the movie and how he relates to this dysfunctional character.

Wow...so serious. Is it just me, or is Rob in full-on Edward Cullen mode here? Such a method actor, this guy! It's almost like, "what would Edward think of Art?" Interesting.
I love this movie, and this is great insight into Art's character.
He is really gorgeous.
Can't wait for Little Ashes.
Good interview. HTB is a hilariously heartbreaking movie. He does a great job portraying Art.
It's good to see Rob serious. He looks sleepy though.
Thanks Dani!
Poor Rob. He just needs to stop doing interviews for a good long while. He's working too hard! He just tries so earnestly to answer every question and he gets in trouble when he entertains himself and says silly things in interviews now..he's aging in front of our eyes and getting world weary.
Always great to see an interview of him no matter the topic; he does look kind of serious in it, who knows why... or maybe I´m just imagining it.. =P
Leann, he does appear full on Edward mode. Looks fanbloodytastic. Make up, hair. wardrobe...Edwardalicious.
Boy. he's been a busy boy these days. Everyone wants a piece of him right now. Poor luv.
He looks ever so slightly peaked. (perhaps he just rang off with the Guardian!)
I am constantly impressed by his professionalism and maturity level.
"I have problems with my parents" as a song lyric. LOL! (SPOILER WARNING)If only he could work "I have an erection" in there somewhere.
I enjoyed this interview. Rob shares his perspective about Art most thoughtfully. He is intelligent and it really shows here.
That said, how amazingly gorgeous is he here???? And the hair is working it's way on up to Comic-Con status. mmmmmmmmm.
Also, I always love his varied facial expressions. Sexy!
Is it hot in here?
I just watched it again. Now that I have calmed myself down a bit from my dazzlement (a word?), I want to say it does look like maybe he was not so much into interviewing. However he always seems to put his all in to answering the questions. Very professional, and generous.
Rob looks great, as always, but I agree - he looks beat. Maybe he needs a hug - Hey Rob, I give great hugs! :) hehe
this interview must have been after the guardian wrapped up cause he still looks a bit peaked...poor thing, he's probably tired and just wanna rest
In this interview Rob is hotter than ever. Absolutely beautiful, but so tired...
I agree with everyone he's in an off mood. I was like,"oh there's a smile." I was getting a bit nervous for him. I hope he is just trying to stay in character in his head as much as possible. He's beautiful regardless.
I'm not very happy with the guardian interview. She was one of the types that sucks the life right out of you.
Rob is juggleing various aspects of his career and personal life and he's doing a phenomenol job.
So boo to the negative media who are out to steal his thunder.
Argh, I missed it. "This content is currently unavailable."
The interview was made this week, along with the Bella & Edward breakup scene. Throw in skanky interviewer from the Guardian and no wonder he looks tired. On the other hand, has he ever looked more gorgeous?
I think it was a good interview. very interesting. It's also good that he can do informative interviews, that he doesn't always need to dazzle the audience (I too love being dazzled thought). The mood can also be set by the journalist, if the guy interviewing him was in a more serious mode, then maybe Rob went that way...
Songirl, my thoughts exactly. And it seems like all the hype and gossip have taken a toll ... looking back at interviews prior to Twilight's release, it's almost like watching a different person. I hope that it's just really a combination of being in character and being tired more than a fundamental change.
Love reading all your comments, and I've been wondering, IS Rob changing before our very eyes? Becoming jaded and world-weary? Or was he just in a contemplative mood? Obviously this interview was conducted right in the middle of NM filming, and we have been told they've been shooting the "heavy" stuff this week. It only makes sense that would be draining on the actors involved.
Looking back at the myriad interviews this poor boy has done over the past 6 months (one Youtube search will yield at least 100 of them,) I realize that Rob's moods do swing wildly back and forth from silly and giddy to serious and thoughtful, and sometimes just downright exhausted. I love that he pretty much wears his heart on his sleeve, and it's not too difficult to tell what mood he's in at any given time. He isn't capable of putting on a gameshow-host kind of mask and being "on" all the time. It's one of my favorite traits about him.
I guess I won't worry until he turns into a complete recluse or surrounds himself with 5 bodyguards just to go get a burger. I hope he's still able to maintain some semblance of a normal life, because I'd hate to see the media and crazy stalkers turn him into some paranoid mega-star we don't recognize anymore. I think he'll fight that happening tooth and nail.
Sorry about the ramble! Why is it he brings out the mothering side of me sometimes? lol
Leann - tell me about it. I've spent so much energy morphing into maternal mode whenever someone threatens him, I'll probably be disappointed if I don't get a Mother's Day card from him.
Serious Rob sort of scares me... He most def is in Edward mode. I was on the edge of my seat the entire interview waiting for him to crack a joke or something... it never really happened... He has spoiled us with his wit in all his other interviews...
Still love him though! I can't imagine what he goes through on a daily basis... I would be such an asshole after doing interview after interview...
Summit overstretched it with all those tv-interviews on set shown before the film was even finished and especially with the extensive promo tour. No wonder he is tired of giving interviews.
Happy Saturday ladies!
Leann and Suz - Full ON Edward Cullen mode - OMR!
Robward on RobArt...Great interview. They might be "outsiders" but really NOTHING alike. Sorry Comcast but that was a useless observation. And it does't give Rob enough credit for the range he's showing us!
Great insight into Rob's state of mind at the time too.
Loved this interview... Rob seriously comes up with the most insightful & interesting responses at the drop of a hat. I love that you can practically see the wheels spinning in that beautiful head of his. One thing I've noticed is that when he's really thinking hard about a response, he rubs his eyebrow with his pointer & middle fingers... it's very cute.
But yeah, I agree that he seemed pretty tired in this interview, which is completely understandable. I love that he doesn't put up a fake front and cover up his moods. And the fact that he was obviously tired yet still remained completely professional and engaged in the interview just makes me respect and love him even more :)
No...it's not an Eward mode he is in. That's how Rob is. I remember seeing the behind the scenes trailer interview for Twilight. He was sitting in Edwards room and was talking just like this showing his intelligence and giving insight into the character. That is what first attracted me to him and not him being Edward.
He switches all the time from serious to funny depending on what's being asked. Hell don't we all do that??? We get into different moods around different people and different situations. That's all it is...not him becoming some serious worn out actor that's about to go crazy and hide himself away. He is stronger than that and we have seen it during all the mall tours and the premieres around the world. Since he got through all that mess and conquered the world why now would he break down???
He really is remarkably insightful—especially for a man, and especially for a man his age.
I've just realized that my intense interest in him (which is COMPLETELY unprecedented and out of character...especially for a woman my age...who has been to "university" :) ) has NOTHING to do with the fact that he is a well-known actor.
While it is certainly pleasant, and even enriching, to experience his film and TV performances, the real draw, for me, is his intelligence and tremendous personality. (Full disclosure: I admit that his exceptional beauty is not irrelevant, and that if he were physically unattractive, or if he were a woman, I would not be quite so smitten. Oh, and the accent doesn't hurt.)
With these interviews‚ it's not the usual fawning and fakery and unfounded adulation typically associated with the famous. I feel as if I am merely overhearing a fascinating conversation at the next table—a conversation with a real person, not a media construct—and wishing I could join in.
Oh—and wishing I had the chance to make him tired, too, one way or another....
which is COMPLETELY unprecedented and out of character...especially for a woman my age...who has been to "university"Looks like you aren't so different from the rest of us. ;-)
Thanks, phosphorus!
I've been feeling a bit bashful, because these are my first forays into blog commentary. It seems as if there are already so many people who know each other here, and I wasn't sure if newcomers would be welcomed....
he looks sad.. crazy girls chasing him, tons of interviews, and tabloids. poor robbb. i still love the interviews though. (=<3
I thought he was either serious or really unhappy in this interview, lol. Perhaps it was done during a break in shooting and he was in Edward mode ... his ET interviews were much happier and lighter. Hope some of the stress of some of the crazy fans and rumors aren't getting to him.
One more thing ... he also looks great, lol. Love Robward, and hope the hair stays like that for a long time.
Can anyone tell me when How To Be is on DVD in the US? I'm in Iowa, and I don't think I'll be able to see it at any theater/film festival. I looked on the IFC channel we get, and didn't see it either ...
Excellent interview and many thoughtful comments here.
Songirl~I agree that Rob is aging before our eyes. I think he could easily play thirty years old. Not a bad thing at all... I think Rob will look very different in ten years and still be handsome no matter what age.
He's very mature and knows himself very well. He's over the shock of becoming famous. I believe Rob spends a lot of time thinking...and it shows.
I LOVE this interview! I love that the interviewer doesn't even hint at anything Twilight and just talks about HTB. Must have been a relief for Rob! I love hearing Rob's insight on Art's character and about human nature in general and such. He is just unbelievably intelligent. I'm amazed by his thought process every single interview.
It's nice to see a different sort of interview, although I do love happy Rob too! I agree with everyone else that he seems really serious and all, but I think it's an energy thing. Kind of like in theater...it's a give and take relationship with the audience. If the audience is reacting well, the performance from the actors is better. I think it's the same thing with interviews. If the interviewer is serious, funny, rude, etc, that will dictate the response from the person being interviewed. Hopefully that's the reason for his subdued demeanor rather than Rob actually feeling weary or drained or anything.
