How To Be Driector Oliver Irving talks about Rob and the Movie

One of our readers, Rachel went to the Nashville screening of How To Be. She wrote us a lengthy review of the movie and the fans :) First I give you a video of How To Be director Oliver Irving talking about How To Be then Rachel's email to us, unedited :)

Rachel says:
The Nashville Film Festival Screening of “How To Be”

First, I just want to say how amazing this film is. If you don’t have an appreciation for dry, cheeky British humor, you won’t get it. At all. I guess if you’ve seen “I Heart Huckabees” it kind of has that feel, but it’s much cleverer than that movie. Rob was fantastic in it, of course. He makes a pretty believable Edward, but he makes an even more believable Art. Trust me when I say that. Sometimes I doubt he was even acting.

The Nashville Film Festival was very organized so it was easy to get in the doors and get into position in the queue. There were several “fan girls” there and that kind of sucked. I mean, I’m a huge fan, but I really try to not act like I have no self-control. These guys are human after all. They walk, talk, eat, piss and sleep the same as we do…and even make funny body noises, too. While it’s easy to get carried away, it ends up taking away from the experience for those fans that aren’t crazy “fan girls” or can at least keep their excitement contained at a manageable level. Plus, this movie is receiving a lot of fan fare, so there were several moviegoers at the festival who had never seen Twilight and had probably missed most of the Robert Pattinson buzz. I know all the hysteria probably took away from their experience, too. Now, getting off of my bitchy little soapbox…

Like I said, the movie was great. All of the actors make perfectly believable characters and their comedic timing is so perfect that you really do get wrapped up in the characters. By the time the movie is finished, you find yourself really rooting for Art and his mates, and really disliking his cold mother and distant father. You feel heartfelt emotions for them – all good signs of a great movie. I probably laughed at parts not meant to be funny, but I have a twisted sense of humor sometimes.

Sam Bradley was at the screening, as he’s in town for his shows in Nashville later in the week. How some people acted towards him placed me high on top of my soapbox. The giggly women in front of us accosted him immediately and asked him “So did you talk to Rob today?” Are you serious? And then they THANKED HIM FOR COMING…and HOPED HE ENJOYED THE SHOW. I know we have that whole Southern hospitality thing going on, but seriously? Are we movie ushers all of a sudden, too? Sam was a good sport, though. He took everything in stride, signing autographs and taking pictures with everyone who asked. I didn’t ask. I figured I’d get my shot at his show when he’s actually being “Sam Bradley: Musician God” instead of sitting quietly trying to watch a movie. But again, I do feel bad for the guy. He’s a talented guy outside of the whole “Rob Frenzy” and I hope most people actually treat him like a separate entity instead of a direct pathway to meeting Rob. That’s just nuts. If you’re going to Sam’s show, please say you love his music, too, and that you’re not just going because the shirt that he’s wearing may have touched Rob at some point in time. Please.

The cast and director did a brief Q and A session after it was over and it was great. They all seem like nice, funny guys. They cleverly avoided the elephant in the room question “What was it like to work with Robert Pattinson?” and again took it all in stride. They explained how the film was made on an extremely low budget, how some of the actors worked for nothing, and how they forged genuine friendships with one another on set. By the time it gets to a crucial scene near the end of the movie, where Art and Nikki get PISSED, the friendship is already there. Oliver said he let them drink all day so by the time they filmed that scene, everyone was drunk. Rob really got slapped and when he laughs uproariously and almost falls on the floor, that was really him just being “Rob” and extremely drunk. He said he did choose Rob because he seemed to understand the character and possess some “Art traits” himself, and he also liked the fact that he isn’t very drama trained, so Rob was open to Oliver’s direction in the film.

I did hear several people mention “Robsessed” in the crowd, too. So I guess Robsessed is like, the Bible of the Robert Pattinson universe. I saw several people capturing video recordings of the movie (which is annoying to other moviegoers and…oh yes…illegal) and heard some people mention they were going to submit it to Robsessed. Oh, well.(Gozde: Thanks for the love but we won't be posting any illegally obtained videos. The DVD will be out in 15 days, I think we can all wait)

The guys all hung around and signed autographs and took pictures after the viewing and were very nice and very humble. I was really impressed with them and have a lot of funny memories and laughs.

I hope this doesn’t come off sounding too snooty – I hope you know my intention. But if you do that whole “What Would Rob do?” thing in your head…and you saw someone acting that way over yourself or your friends, you’d probably crap your pants and split. I know I would.

I just got an email this morning from amazon.uk and it said that my order of the DVD will be dealyed in shipment due to a hold on the release. SO now instead of it being released in late April~ my estimated date of arrival is late May to early June ...I guess all I can do is wait~ and watch it on-demand on IFC when it's up ... On an up-note, I did get my copy of the soundtrack yesterday, didn't get one that He signed..but I still love it nonetheless.

Every day I read all your posts and let me tel you...I love the way you write and tolk about him. I think is the right way. Good job and thanks.

Rachel, I am with you ALL the way on this. You know I am!! See, people agree? And fans should be more like you! Poor guys trying to be themselves but get asked nothing except questions about Rob... It's sad. Someone needed to say this. Most of us are obviously grown ups.. no need to act like pre-teens about him :)

Rachel, Fab review and I totally agree with what Jules said "we need more like you" ;-)

Lizzy I also just got that e-mail about the DVD :-( Oh well gues I'll just have to wait, patience is not my strong point! LOL

Rachel,
Thank you for the Fab review!
Not snotty at all, I agree with you 100%
I hate when people see Sam Bradley as some kind of pathway to Rob. The guy is so talented and I think sometimes thats over looked a bit because he's friends with Rob :-/
But I suppose it is good for him in a way, that friendship has helped boom his career!

Pity about HTB DVD release :( We'll have to hold on just another lil while. Can't wait to see it :)

Rachel, love the review! I don't you sound snotty at all, just completely honest! ;}
After reading you review,I am even more excited for the screening on Friday; I didn't think that was possible. :D

Have you ladies heard the soundtrack yet?? I've been keeping "Jam Session" on repeat. RobArt (Arthur :P) sounds adorably confused in that track. It's too cute.

I went to the screening in Nashville, too. It was an excellent movie. The entire cast was great! I love british humor though. I agree with Rachel...crazy Rob fans should try to keep it in check. That older lady all over Sam was a bit much. I felt sorry for him. There was one question in the Q&A where some girl asked if they were friends with Rob before the movie was filmed. I hope the crazies don't show up to Sam's shows on Wednesday and Thursday and freak out about Rob. They should be there to see Sam do this thing. I would like Sam to play more gigs in the future and not runaway and never return to Nashville again.

Saw the film last night in MN, and I have to it was one of the best films I have seen in awhile. I laughed so hard throughout the entire thing! I agree that Rob was fantastic and incredibly believable, I too would say I wonder if he was acting at times or being himself, seemed similar to how he is in interviews.

We also had too many "fan girls" I had a couple of 16 year olds next to me that squeeled throughout the movie and then there the ones that were all dressed up and both the screening and the after party, it was very entertaining...did they really think Rob was showing up and if he did they really think he was going home with them?

Any loved the film would love to see more from Oliver and of course Rob.

Hey Lesa-just seeing if you were on. Checking the site first time today. Read your comment-haha-hope i wasn't CTL (crazy twilight lady) she was referring too-man-I thought I behaved pretty well....oh well. Can't please veryone, right?!?

CullenGal09 said...

I only asked Sam for an autograph and said hi-didn't tell him to enjoy the show, or any dumb stuff like that. That's going to give me a bit of a complex now-ha.

I just want to say one thing in response to this account of the Nashville screening of HTB. I got more and more irritated the more i thought about it, especially since I was there, and had a great time, and don't think I'm crazy at all. Yes, I approached Sam, and talked to him 2 or 3 times. He passed right by me and my husband while he went o his seat-was I not supposed to say hi? Was it so wrong I got an autograph? He was sooooo nice, very gracious, and talked to my husband and me separately after tha show. He didn't seem put off by it, or anything else. I didn't ask him about Rob except once in passing-i was very cautious to focus on him. I was interested in when his CD would be out-so I asked him that-and also if he would be playing Memphis anytime in the near future. i I do like what I've heard of his msuic, and would love to hear him live. I told him that too. So, that was the crux or substance of our conversation. if that sounds "crazy", or whatever, my bad. I thought i acted pretty normal, had a calm, normal conversation with him. Oliver too. Oh, and I didn't mention Rob to him at all, just for the record. I enjoyed the movie, and the guys, they were very sweet, and gracious as well. So while I do see your point to a certain extent, and I don't think you're snooty-i think you do have some sour grapes. I understand they're just people too, but they are extraordinary and talented people you don't get to be around normally-let's face it. They were fascinating and very cool to talk to. So sue me. Oh, and one last thing-the fact they are close with Rob is just aplus-a big plus, yes, but just a plus. I liked them anyway. they know Rob is the impetus behind most people going to the film and all, and Sam knows the same thing about his music as well. He says on his MySpace page that he is appreciative to rob's fans, and is so happy it's getting his m,usic a wider sudience, with "Never Think" on the soundtrack to Twi and everyhting. He's enjoying the ride to a great extent and reaping great benefits-why be altogether put off by it? So, in conclusion, if you call me crazy Twi Lady-go ahead. I had a great time, the movie was awesome, and my husband and I enjoyed it very much. And by the way-youposted this on a site called Rob-sessed, and your calling his fans crazy?!? Jsut a thought to mull over....

The audience in mpls seemed to like the film a lot. More girls than guys but the two rows next to me were all Brits looking for a slice of home. The q&a seemed pretty good to me- questions for the cast and Olivier- not too Rob-centric. Joe the music guy didn't get many questions. Nice guys though at the after thing. Personally, I need to see HTB again to wrap my thoughts around it. The movie has it's flaws but was very interesting and dry. My S.O. didn't care for it. To quote Tropic Thunder - he said Rob went full retard. I disagree - I thought he was brave and heartbreaking in his emotional stuntedness for lack of a better word.

Great review and I am so eager to watch this movie already. Sigh...I gotta wait a little longer to get it but well if you wait for something good, it is all worth the wait.

Shani said...

Rachel, that was a wonderful and honest review. What that lady did was wrong on so many levels coming up to Sam like that asking him has he talked to Rob. It was really shocking and disgusting for her to ask him that like she knew him or something. Now that's a fan that is taking her obsession way too far. Okay now I'm off my soapbox...

Now I can't wait to see HTB. I'm sad a little that the DVD will be delayed. I will just have to be patient...delayed gratification...:((((

I thought the review was fine! And I'm actually glad you brought up the Sam thing. When he played in Toronto, I think we were all very respectful about the Rob connection. At least all the girls I met were. And Sam obviously knows that his career is benifiting, as is all of Rob's friends, because of Rob's fans. He actually would mention his friend, never by name, and then laugh as we were all in on the joke. He for sure has a great sense of humor towards the whole thing and didn't seem to care how people found his music, just that they did. He also is very deserving of all this attention as his talents stand on their own. I actually love how they all seem to support eachother, isn't that we do for our friends?

CullenGirl -

1) You obviously weren't the intended target, seeing as you didn't say the things I quoted "CTL" as saying. You just took that and ran with it.

2) I also didn't start the CTL label, no matter how cheeky and brilliant it is. I kind of wish I had started the nickname, though.

3) I don't have sour grapes, but I do have three kidney stones, a broken iPod, and autographs in Swedish from the HTB guys. Maybe I'm simply irritated. Or maybe I'm just embarrassed at how so many people acted. I most certainly don't want to be grouped in with all the CTLs simply because I'm a big fan that enjoys Rob's work.

4) I am a huge fan (I say so in the review, and I say so now...for all of posterity to view ) and I am not knocking other huge fans like myself. Only CTL's. If you aren't a CTL, then you have nothing to worry about and you shouldn't have to defend your honor.

5) Totally love Robsessed - why else would I submit a review? You act as if I'm not owning up my Rob love. Trust me, I own it. I own it and brand it into my skin. I just don't shit myself when I see celebrities (A-list, B-list, C-list or lower). No biggie.

5) I'm not even sure why I'm responding to your comment, actually. It must be the painkillers.

P.S. Thanks for everyone who agreed (and disagreed) with the review. Something needed to be said, so I put myself out there and said it.

Holly said...

Oh and CullenGal...I think you are also right. I found Sam to also be extremely gracious. Again, he knows that most of us were turned on to his music because we are fans of Rob's and I didn't get the impression that it bothers him at all. If it did, he certainly wouldn't be showing up some place that would obviously be filled with Rob fans!

Maryann said...

Rachel, HTB autograph in Swedish? I am Norwegian and I do understand Swedish just fine lol, So if ya need a translation feel free to ask lol.

CullenGal09 said...

Rachel-I don't knwo you, but i want to apologize if i seemed to be ranting. I just got a bit oversensitive I suppose. i felt conflicted about approaching them as it was, and I just didn't think there would be better chance to get an autograph, or tell them how i liked the movie, Sam's music, etc. Didn't mean to start anything. Thank you for the clarification. My apologies again. We're all fans indeed, and needd to stick together. Share the love, right?!? Love for Rob, and his work, which are both beautiful. Thanks again, and appreciate you and your point of view. Seriously. Thank You.

CullenGal09 said...

One more thing-hope you read my apology, Rachel, and no hard feelings-I hope. Once again, we have to stick together. Oh, and I'm 37 and married-I don't consider myself to be a CTL (Only in fun maybe ;)) It is cheeky, and I didn't mean to take things the wrong way. Again, hope you read and understand. Best Wishes.

@ MaryAnn - I know the few Swedish words I asked them to write. One of my very besties is from Sweden, and won't be able to see HTB for awhile, so I scored some autographs for her on Sunday night. They were all very amused by my requests for autographs in Swedish - and trying to recall what little Swedish they knew.

And @ CullenGirl - Apology accepted. No hard feelings. We are all in this for a shared love and appreciation for Rob's work. Fighting and bickering is useless. We should use our energy on more productive things - like *quietly* drooling over his dashing good looks and his devilish English accent. :)

CullenGal09 said...

Hi Rachel. Agreed! Dashing good looks-British accent *thud*. Yeah. Works for me! :) Cheers!
