KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. — There are times when the limitations of the printed word come into focus, like when there is a need to convey how it sounded when Robert Pattinson, who stars as the vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen in the forthcoming movie “Twilight,” stepped onto a riser at the King of Prussia Mall outside Philadelphia on Thursday evening in front of more than 1,000 mostly teenage girls.
In collective pitch, frequency and volume the sound would make a shuttle launching seem demure, a Jack White guitar solo retiring, a jackhammer somehow soothing. To reach into history, it may have approached Beatles-at-Shea-Stadium loud, replete with the weeping, swooning and self-hugging, and only the ambient flutter of cellphone cameras and furious texting by way of modern update. All of it was arrayed over a mostly unknown British actor who plays a character in a movie that will not be released until Friday.“What is with all the screaming?” Mr. Pattinson asked when he came out. He absently ran his hand through his hair. Pandemonium ensued. He tugged at his white T-shirt in response, ever so nervously. Oh, boy. Then he laughed good-naturedly at the absurdity of it all. The smile was just a bit too much. A girl in a “Team Edward” shirt fell into the arms of her friend. “I can’t stand it!” she said.
And when he did, the crowd didn’t see an actor. They saw Edward Cullen, the perfect boyfriend who just happens to live on blood.
Gozde:Skipping the parts about Twilight that we all know...“The connection that I am an actor playing this character is sort of skipped,” he said, laughing during an interview before the throng was admitted to the Hot Topic store here. “They are in denial. They think I am Edward Cullen.” Mr. Pattinson, 22, said he had no idea what to make of his situation, about to meet thousands of teenage girls — and many of their mothers — who were flat-out in love with him.
“It is bizarre,” he said. “People come from three states away and walk up to you trembling. I feel that I am at a disadvantage here because I can’t provide this mystical thing that they came for in the two seconds we have.”
...skipping...“When he comes to our store and meets with these fans, he is becoming Edward,” said Betsy McLaughlin, chief executive of Hot Topic, adding that “a license like this comes along once every few decades,” mentioning Harry Potter, SpongeBob SquarePants and “South Park.”
....skipping....
The last movie the “Twilight” director, Catherine Hardwicke, made, “The Nativity Story,” also depicted unconsummated love between a mortal and a nonmortal, but that’s where the similarity ends. Ms. Hardwicke also directed “Thirteen,” a very different take on teenage sexuality, and “The Lords of Dogtown.” She was at the Apple store for an appearance with Mr. Pattinson and was ready for a frantic response, partly because she had seen young fans showing up to observe the frigid “Twilight” shoots in the mountains of Oregon.
“You have the story of a young woman falling so deeply in love that she doesn’t care if she dies or becomes a vampire,” Ms. Hardwicke said. “There is something so dangerous and alluring about it, and it all goes off in this very lush mountain backdrop. It’s an obsessive love that’s not that far from ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ or ‘Titanic’ for that matter.”
Back on the stage at the King of Prussia Mall, Mr. Pattinson continued to stand awkwardly but, somehow, fantastically beautifully at the same time. A local radio D.J. fed him written questions from the audience, but his answers were buried by screaming.
“Do you guys care about the questions, or do you just want to talk about nothing?” Mr. Pattinson asked.
A young woman in a shirt emblazoned with the Cullen family crest spoke for many: “We just want to look at you.”.

“I never got my letter from Hogwarts,” the front said, and on the back it continued, “So I am moving to Forks to live with the Cullens.”
Hahahahaha!!
"Mr. Pattinson continued to stand awkwardly but, somehow, fantastically beautifully at the same time." (Totally caught my eye)
Those were the best descriptions of the fandemonium. I honestly don't know how I would behave if I got a once in a million shot to meet him. I'm just a swoony mess when it comes to him.
"We just want to look at you". SERIOUSLY GIRLS, he is not a piece of meat. What makes that guy so freaking adorable is when he opens his mouth and starts talking.
YES he is gorgeous, but like Bella says about Edward in the book "there is more behind the face".
If this kind of thing happened for an actress every single woman would be outraged about how this is demeaning.
Ugh, crazy tween fan girls with their crazy hormones.
Sorry about the rant, but jeez.
Crazy older women with their crazy hormones! I hear where you are coming from Estrellas!
You would want to be able to meet him in a controlled small situation like in a hotel room where at least say like just the forty of us on this blog could pitch questions and have fun! A girl can dream can't she?
"We just want to look at you"... gag me with, like, a spoon. Rob's personality is what makes him so adorkable and I love hearing him speak. If they just want to look at him they should go buy one of the cardboard cut-outs on ebay and put it in their rooms, at least that way Rob wouldn't be completely exhausted and suffering from hearing loss.
It's Jov, and I'm shaking my head.
He must be so over this by now.
I put myself in his shoes and think what must he feel like to just be a piece of meat to be fly city to city to have the same thing happen again and what you have left is your ears ringing after. I think after awhile for me I would feel empty and be yearning for serenity. I'm sure at first it might be almost fun, the bizareness, but then I think it would make me want to put my life on rewind. Rewind to when I could have control of my life back again.
Will he be able to go to London and get what I call "feed my soul", mine is a walk on the beach, but his possibly meandering the streets, singing, drinking with friends in pubs. He has said he used to never leave his place that much anyway, before all this.
Time with his family at Christmas will probably do him a world of good for his well being, to get grounded.
I hope all of this is really worth it for him.
JOV
jewel-- I actually got my Xmas present in October when Santa decided Rob should come to Mexico city and that I should be one of the lucky 160 girls to get an autograph.
As bad as people say Mexico was, honestly the event was so much better made than the HT tour. Inside the movie cinema where he would be signing we agreed to let him speak. Some girls shouted that they loved him, and some (myself included) gave a little scream when it was our turn to pass, but we seriously didn't do any damage to his hearing.
And your dream is my dream. How I wish that would happen. Hope Rob knows that not all of his fans think he is just Edward Cullen.
I meant "flown" city to city.
Jov
Stella-D you rant away. Its pretty sad. I know when I have been in the presence of a celebrity the last thing on my mind to do is say something demeaning, embarrassing yes. But demeaning and gross ala "take off your pants" its just not okay. The guy isnt the second coming of Christ, he isnt better than you or me, perhaps better looking than most men but he isnt more special or important that you or me. Hell I think if he met me like most my friends he'd want to hang out. I'm a riot.
I think we all need to remember, yes we adore Rob. He is simply made of win. He is wonderful and talented, but I dont know the guy from Adam and wouldnt die for him or take a bullet for him, he is a normal guy with an extraordinary job. He deserves our adoration but also our respect.
That's why I love running this blog with Goz, although she is the one kicking ass today as my hub is a computer hog. But anyways this is a fun and positive place to be, Goz isnt a fangirl far from it and neither of us is delusional. It makes a big difference.
Holy Hell sorry that was a bit of wordage there.
like when he said he'll have to find a new in & out place.
I'll go get a latte and if they recognize me, i don't like it.
I could never be a celeb. I just get cabin fever too easily.
Jov
You know I wrote him a fan letter back in August. Still haven't sent it. Don't know what stops me from doing so. I'd just feel so weird... At least here I can vent. Maybe one day I just send a congrats card giving him my support, and a few photos for him to sign.
rant away Dani
Jov
He just seems sweet and a little prone to depression and I worry about him. I'm sure him mum worries about him.
I think he's taking things in stride right now, but it will get old. Believe me, it will get old.
Jov
Jewels, I'd sent it if you wrote him one, because in the business he's in, you get judged so much and I think love letters are good to get.
Jov
One things I loved was when Goz skipped all the repeat twi stuff.
Love ya Goz.
Jov
You know you could be right Jov. Thanks for the nudge! It's still sitting in the big envelope with photos and SASE inside. Looks like I'm going to the post office tomorrow!
Dani, I agree the shouting to him
"Take off your pants!" Was so crossing the line.
More like "Thanks for putting up with this Asinine screaming."
Jov
Yeah Jov, Goz makes me smile when she does that. We've all heard it a million times ad nauseum now.
His parents have probably flown in and that's a good thing. Hopefully he won't be too worried about his family tomorrow and just enjoy the premiere and acutally go into the cinema and watch the film with his family and friends.
*taking a deep breath*
I hope tomorrow is such a wonderful unforgettable day for him.
Jov
Actually I hope his Dad hugs him a lot and I'm imagining his mum will.
Jov
These boards are gonna light up tomorrow night. Is everyone ready for a late night tomorrow? I'm getting nervous for him...
Sorry Jewels I meant send it, not sent it. I'm known for not proffing.
Jov
I just type away and not even care what I say, I just put it out there.
Yeah, jewels I think I will. I have to go out of town the next day, but I'll stay up as late as I can.
I bet he's shaking in his boots. Drinks with his family, that's what I do. And some champagne to celebrate.
Jov
I bet it breaks the records that Quantum of Solace has right now. Between advance ticket sales and what will happen next weekend, Summit is going to be laughing all the way to the bank!
Jewels, I think it's going to be one of the biggest weekend grosses in a long, loooong time.
Jov
I gotta get ready for a BBQ at my place. I'll log on later.
Jov
Love that Interview and I have nothing to add to what you've all said except to say that I agree with EVERYTHING ye have said and Jewels how cool would it be if the forty of us could get together in a hotel room and ask Rob sensible/different questions and not leave him half deaf!!!
Oh I do have something to add. I LOVE this blog!!
Ladies, I'm heading out for the night. My brother is arriving and he'll be in the guest room where the computer is, so I won't be able to chat later. :(
I'll be able to see the posts from my mobile web, I just can't comment. That's just torture. It would be like standing in front of Rob and not being able to touch the hair (or the zipper). Nite all!
Have a good time Jewels!! I'm heading off to bed it's late here and I'm on the road tomorrow. Will catch up on Rob news when I get back tomorrow evening. Ye will probably have 2 pages of posts by then LOL
Nite nite
Have fun, Jewels!
'night!
Tomorrow is going to be INSANE cause it's PREMIERE DAY :)
Did you girls see that a lot of fan sites got invited to the premiere? That's pretty cool. I'm glad Summit is really going all out for it.
I'm seriously excited, I have some people in LA who are going to it as well and are reporting back to me since I can't be there for it. My blackberry will be attached to me at all times tomorrow :P
I am jazzed that some of the top sites got invited. I am sure the good ones will bring back lots of pictures and vids.
Going to be a nutty day for the cast though, press already crawling up their asses and now fans galore. I fear for them a little.
I'm looking forward to seeing all the photo's and video's tomorrow!
I wonder if we'll see pictures of his family or if he'll try to keep them out of it?
