The scene existed in the novel but hadn't originally been part of the screenplay (films are not one-to-one translations of books). In this scene Edward would play piano for Bella. I wasn't officially working on the film at that point and they didn't know what Rob Pattinson (Edward) should play during the shoot. This is not an unusual situation - many films have an actor sitting at a keyboard, swaying back and forth, pretending to play music that was only written after the film has been shot and edited. This case was unusual in that Rob is a fine musician, and fully capable of playing the piano or probably any other instrument.

Oh my goodness, what a sensational and heartfelt article!
Wow, Carter Burwell poured his soul in to that music and went through so much to get Summit's approval. I am so glad that his true vision was peppered in to the final cut. It's funny, but, I think that I also liked the idea of a love theme versus Bella's Lullaby just like Carter Burwell and CH---it seems more fitting with that particular scene. But, it always comes down to dollars and cents. C'est la vie!

Great article. Thank you for posting that. I love that so much effort and feeling went in to writing the music. I can't wait to hear Rob playing it. He's such a passionate person that I'm sure all the emotion will be conveyed beautifully.

By the way, Rob, five minutes of you playing the piano is anything but irrelevant. More like brilliant.

It is an amazing acheivement that a composer like Burwell would compiment Rob do much. Amy rocks for turning my attention to that. Sometimes we forget just how important the musical composition of a film is. But music can make or break a scene. It can mean the difference of believing in that movie, being trancended to that world for 2 hours or simply watching people on a screen. I'm very happy that someone so passionate for music as Burwell and Rob for that matter is involved with making the music and movie come to life.
On a side note on one of Burwell's pieces for the film the vocals are done by Rob's sister Lizzie. Kind of neato.
Dani---I couldn't agree more. I found Carter Burwell's honesty very candid and a bit overwhelming. A great musical score definitely sets the tone for any great film, as does the overall composition.
And, like everyone else, I am really jazzed about hearing Rob's genius on the piano----yes, those yummy fingers will be hard not to stare at! And, to hear the talents of another Pattinson will be sensational.
The end comment by Carter Burwell was so sweet---it was great to know that his gift to Christine is now Twilight's.

Lynn it was lovely to read Burwells thoughts and he was quite honest and candid and really lovely. I imagine he and Catherine got along very well in that vid they seem to be on the same page. So very cool.

I love the the juxaposition of the gothic garden and the time of day, it really set the mood and feeling of the film.

The hair was standing up and I had the chills as I read the end of the article.
He was so candid in the article (I'm surprised). I love it when you're fortunate enough to hear the inside bits. It adds so much more to it (a story within a story). Now when I watch the scenes where this music accompanies, I will really feel what the composer was feeling, His emotions merge with the characters, and it will add another really interesting layer.
It must be pretty uncharacteristic of a composer to include a personal composition in a movie score. This whole thing is just "gifted"
