Gays in movies, Little ashes mention

It seems the British threw away their so-called "traditional values" long before we even thought about it. But is this a new phenomenon? Are actors from the other side of the Atlantic more open and ready to take on controversial roles including dressing up in women's clothes and exposing their feminine side? I think not. French and German actors have been doing the same thing...

The rest is here.

"In Mexico, no one has given me any s**t for playing gay roles, for playing a transvestite, whatever. They don't confuse the actor with the role. I mean, they don't think Al Pacino's a cop!" Gael Garcia Bernal

So true, we make a huge deal about it here in America it is a little weird. I mean wether you agree with the lifestyle or not it is odd that Americans often cannot separate the roles of actors. Like people getting hate mail for playing a rapist or getting love letters for playing a hot vampire.

"There are no small parts, only small actors". When you are a theatre major you learn many different methods of acting. Stanislavski, Uta Hagen....

Gay, straight, who freaking cares...If you are a talented actor and can tell the story in a way that affects the entire audience, then isn't that all that matters?

I've done my time on the boards. I've had to do scenes that made me uncomfortable, step outside my comfort zone. I'm not necessarily talking about sex either.

Actors have the enormous pressure of making it believable and making it resonate. Personally, I think Rob is headed in that direction. I applaud that both he and Daniel Radcliffe take chances. I think any actor who is willing to expand his craft and knowledge in one that will always be exciting to follow!

Go Rob! Keep Us Indie Girls wanting More. But throw us that occasional Twilight Bon Bon every now and then!

Yes, I agree that it's definitely an Americancentric idea that playing a gay character is the kiss of death. Most Americans are wrapped up in their Judeo-Christian ideals that they lose sight of what is readily accepted worldwide.

I (for one) am really excited for Rob and his role as Salvador Dali and I am more then a little curious and interested in the chemistry between he and Javier Beltran.

I love the fact that he went in to the role with any inhibitions or questions of what it might do to his career. It speaks for Rob's maturity and perserverance as an actor.

BTW, I remember being really excited about seeing My Own Private Idaho andrenting it (on VHS)from Blockbuster. Wow, the opening scene was with Mike (River Phoenix) blowing a john. The fun part was that I was watching it with my super conservative, Republican dad.

I just remember running at warped to speed to hit "STOP" as my dad starting yelling, "what the hell". Yeah, I should have read the back of the box more clearly!

Lynn thats so funny, that movie was just on LOGO a few weeks ago. I was probably too young to watch it when it came out but I love me some River and watched it when I was like 18. Shocked me a little then but I saw Basketball Diaries and then Queer as Folk a few years back. Nothing shocks me now.

It is just strange that people really get attached to the characters and can't see past that, assuming that a strait character is gay because they took a gay role. Or a guy who plays a bad guy can't possibly be a good father or a normal person. Its odd.

Basketball Diaries....? Really? Loved Leo in that movie! The scene with the shotgun and the trench coat? I'm a crazy beeyatch, but love, love , love that movie. Jim Carroll...

"For all the people who died..."

Another famous machine gun scene... Gary Oldman in "Sid and Nancy" performing Sinatra's "My Way" as Sid Vicious and totally shooting up the audience.

Come to think of it...I have a thing for Gary Oldman! "Romeo Is Bleeding". What a hellacious jazz soundtrack. Creepy, sad, but so sexy! Loved the movie. Nice Twists and turns. Lena Olin...good God what a bitch!

I know what you mean! Yeah, you were probably in the second grade, when MOPI was out on video. I don't think that I was bothered by the homosexual as I was about the exploitation of the characters. I still continued to love River Phoenix none the less. It was just a role!

I meant homosexuality...damn typos.

Yes I wasn't shocked by the sexuality so much as the characters were so incredibly raw and when I saw Basketball Diaries it was just so close to home with my brother. Around the time that movie came out my brother was heavy into drugs and verbally abusive it was scary so it hit close, but also helped me heal a bit with writing and being inspired to jot down my thoughts and feelings about the whole mess.

Strange how movies can do that, just transcend into your world and your world into the movie.

Alright I just got serious on your ass there. Sorry didn't mean to get all out there with my thoughts but it happens.

No, no, never feel too serious or too honest!

My BFF (currently in PA) went through a similar experience with her brother and heroin (four years of hell). And, she cannot watch any movies about addiction or heroin use....no Basketball Diaries, no Trainspotting, she still cannot watch Pulp Fiction with a straight face.

The experience definitely changes everyone effected and it's good that you were able process things better with film.

I remember the first time I ever saw 'Bent' with Clive Owen, the story of the movie was so important and they portrayed it so well that you forget that there is so much sexual openness in it. From Mick Jagger swinging down as "Greta" the singing crossdresser, to the open sex as they watched the dancers on the floor. But the story overthrows it all and the actors were incredible.

I look at Little Ashes the same way, it's not someone being gay that is the important thing, it's the story of a life. I feel that if Robert was honest in the roll and as caretaking as he always is, then there will be no reprocussions and he will receive the accolades he so deserves as an actor.

The sheer fact that he and Clive Owen and Sean Bean and all these others that have done those types of rolls are so incredibly talented simply makes us love them all the more.

That's just my opinion.

I appologise for butting in on the new blog like this but I enjoy talking with you girls and felt we had the same opinion styles. I truly hope you don't mind.

Bella's Mom---hey! You are by no means butting in here and welcome. We're just a bunch of rowdy, rubble rousers who enjoy talking about the delectable, Rob Pattinson.

Love your comment! I will have to check out Bent, I adore Clive Owen.

I agree that Little Ashes is definitely not a gay film, but, that it's a person's story of a life that changed the world of art.
